Stopped working

I've lost 5 stone but still one stone away from my goal and still an overweight bmi. I've been in Monjaro since March 2024 and it's stopped working since last November. I'm not gaining but not losing and I'm on the highest dose.
My relationship with food has got worse..:I'm supposed to stick to 1000 cals but I've fallen into a rut of 500 cals for breakfast (eggs/toast) and then I can't face any more food, replace food for alcoholic drink or eat unhealthy snacks for the rest of the day, I must be going over 1000. I've basically fallen back into unhealthy food relationships again. I'm afraid it's all going to go back back in if I stop the dosing.
What would you do? Give it a rest for a while?

I'd track my food on myfitnesspal app and have a higher protein diet and cut out the alcohol, which is essentially just sugar/carbs. Try to limit the junk food treats and go back to protein and veg mainly and whole foods. Once you cut the cycle, the cravings for carbs and junk food with reduce and it will be easier to get back on track. Drink plenty of water too.
My deficit is also 1000 cals so I know its not easy. I use protein shakes, high protein yoghurts, cottage cheese as snacks to increase my protein intake.

Cut out the alcohol and the rest should fall into place.

Tenfoot · 27/06/2026 11:07

If you give it a rest you will put weight back on again, especially if you’ve fallen into bad habits whilst still on the jabs. You’re better off making a conscious decision to go back to basics- clean eating, lots of water, plenty of protein, track what you’re eating. I know it’s difficult mentally once you’ve been on them for a long period of time, keeping going with it, but it will be really worth it if you can reset and start seeing the weight loss again.

PearlsTeapot · 27/06/2026 18:35

I’d be going back to basics with your eating and drinking. Clean and protein rich diet, cut out the sugar and alcohol. I’m sure doing that will see the scales moving again.

Jimmyjimmy123 · 27/06/2026 20:50

Yeah cut the alcohol, the rest will follow, I wouldn't be jabbing though I it wasn't working,or at least upping the dose

Fcukedupflight · 27/06/2026 21:02

I had the same happen to me, apparently it’s really common. I stuck with the injections, gave my head a wobble over how much I was paying to not try, and started losing again after about six months. When I did take a break (medically necessary after a year on them), I gained a stone a month for three months, then had to start back on 2.5 and continued gaining until I got back up to 15ml. It’s not been anywhere near as effective after the break and I’m really upset that I gained so much so quickly. I’ve been back on the jabs for nearly a year now and still not down to the weight i was when had to pause

RoseField1 · 28/06/2026 04:27

1000 is a really low allowance. I couldn't stick to that if I tried even on the highest dose of mounjaro, why are you aiming so low? What's your TDEE?
If you have maintained for 9 months then it's not stopped working, it's just not enough for you to keep losing without changing some fundamental things.

dizzyupthegirl86 · 28/06/2026 08:22

Also have you recalculated your TDEE and therefore calorie deficit based on your current weight? If it’s still based on your original weight then it’s going to be inaccurate. Also check a few sources - my fitness pal calculates it in a very strange way so you’re better off finding your average TDEE and then knocking some off to create your deficit.

some good advice on this already, but I’d say similar. Do a mental reset, have whatever you want for a weekend or something and then start again with a new outlook. Cut out alcohol, eat three clean meals a day and try to do some exercise if you can. If you can’t face food then try protein shakes or meal replacement shakes but fix the way you eat before you focus on the scales.

I’ve been watching old episodes of My 600lb life on YouTube and listening to some of the participants, and virtually all of them use unhealthy foods to deal with trauma.

I think you need to figure out why you’re giving up easily and resorting to unhealthy snacks and alcohol. Maybe find a decent therapist who can help you work out what’s making you self sabotage your previously good efforts?

This is pretty much where I am as well, but for different reasons. I switched to Wegovy when the prices changed, but it wasn't effective at all even on the (then) max dose, so I switched to Mounjaro and had to increase back to 15mg over time. I gained 1.5 stone over that period - from starting Wegovy, but now I've been on max Mounjaro for 2 months, and my appetite doesn't feel much suppressed at all tbh.
I'm not sure what to do now - I'm paying £260 a month for what feels like nothing - but I'm worried that if I stop then I'll start gaining again.

In the meantime I've recently joined the local gym, and trying a variety of classes as well as doing regular cardio and weights.

It might be useful to imagine what your life off of jabs is going to be like, what is the lifestyle of someone who has a lower bodyweight?

It is probably a regular exercise routine, clean eating sun-fri and one/two drinks and a treat on Saturday. If you visualise that and start trying to live that way I think it's a good place to reset, and build the healthy habits for when you reach goal.

When you say “medically necessary” to take a break, presumably that was due to personal medical reasons? Otherwise there’s no reason to take a break.

I was wondering this too. @Fcukedupflight was this something unique to you?
