Mounjaro and sleep apnoea - Any experience or guidance?

I'm almost at my goal weight and target BMI of 25 and on 2.5mg Mounjaro to help me get over the line. I started my weight loss journey mainly because I had been diagnosed with severe sleep apnoea early last year and advised to get to a BMI of 25 (a 2 stone weight loss for me).

I keep seeing references to how Mounjaro can help with sleep apnoea but quite often these articles go on to suggest that it is the weight loss that causes the improvement, although it seems the jury is out on whether GLP1s help more directly, with reduction of inflammation of the airways etc.

I believe there is a small improvement since starting them, but am waiting to do another sleep study to get an insight into how much improvement, if any, there actually is. I am currently on 2.5mg and planning to stay on that dose for another couple of months, but have recently found myself considering if I should stay longer term on a low dose. I am curious about other people's experience, anyone out there using them specifically to help with OSA or just noticing a general improvement in it, while on them?

I've had a CPAP machine since the 1990s. Losing 15 st 4 lb (the final few stones with help of Mounjaro) has meant that I have had to reduce or stop taking several medications, and I have a suspicion that now my BMI is finally just inside the healthy range I may no longer need the machine.

Thing is though, I've got so used to wearing the mask and having air blow up my nose when I get into bed that I'm worried I'd find it difficult to get to sleep without it. It's invaluable in pollen season, because the machine filters the incoming air, and the pressure really helps keep my airways open when I have a snotty cold. So I've decided not to push for another sleep study, though I might take it up with whoever services the machine at my next annual appointment.

@Gardengargoyle well done on that incredible weight loss. I'm really worried about having to go on a CPAP machine so it's erasing to hear you talk about it in positive terms!

A friend started MJ due to diabetes type 2 and her apnea is basically gone one year later.

She doesn’t know if it was the weight loss (she lost around 35kg) or the jab as she could only find out if it comes back when she stops the jabs.

I have severe sleep apnea but I don't get on well with the CPAP machine, I've only managed to sleep with it on a few times.

I assume any weight loss would help as it should get rid of the obstructive fat in the throat and neck.

That's mind blowing, well done you, that's staggering, you must feel very different.

We long suspected my DH had sleep apnea. He started Mounjaro just under a year ago and has lost around 30kg. His sleep has improved so much, he has stopped snoring almost completely even if lying on his back. I suspect a large part of it for him is losing lots of the fat around his neck/throat so his airways aren’t under as much pressure when he’s lying down. But maybe the medication itself is also doing something.

Either way I’m delighted not to be disturbed by him in the night any more!

I was diagnosed with moderate sleep apnoea and used a mandibular device for a few years before losing 40kg on mounjaro. I no longer use the device and sleep well. Haven't redone the sleep study so don't know for certain that I no longer have it but I had symptoms of sleep apnoea since childhood and haven't always been overweight, so i think the mounjaro in itself is making a difference and not just the weight loss. Will be interesting to see what happens if/ when I stop the mounjaro.
