Do you ever worry WLI won’t be available forever?

Sorry odd title. Basically WLI have transformed my life and I accept I will need to stay on them essentially forever or at least for as long medical able or however you want to word it.

But I often get a niggly feeling back of my mind around if they’re not available. If they stop prescribing if you’re at a healthy BMI (I know they don’t currently) or some other issuers to restrict their availability. I guess I feel a little scared that I feel reliant on it.

No, I think that availability will increase. There are more and more GLP1s being developed, in injection and tablet form. Long term, the current ones will eventually go out of patent which means that generic versions can be mass produced and they will be cheaper and more accessible.

I think that perhaps when lots of people are at goal weight and working on maintenance, that the pharmaceutical companies will perhaps want to look at lower dose versions for people to use for long term maintenance without losing any more weight.

No concerns here. If anything there will be more choice and competition which will improve options and price point. Plus oral pills are coming apparently.

AndAllOurYesterdays · 20/06/2026 16:18

I think that I less they discover some so far unknown serious side effect, these drugs are here for the long haul. I suspect by the time our kids are grown they will become as normal as taking a lemsip when you have a cold.

I have to remind myself that modern medicine has only really existed for barely a hundred years. So another 10 or 20 years is an extraordinary amount of time in that context. So I tend to think we'll have more options not fewer.

i get you - I feel the same sometimes. It’s like…. We’re so lucky this has become available to us, but like you say - we’re so reliant on it, what it something happens and it’s suddenly no longer available?
we’ve had a taste of losing weight being ‘easy’ (I know it isn’t easy per se, but certainly easier!) and the idea that we may be a healthy weight and all of the problems with being obese will be over…. And if that were to go, it would almost be worse than if it never existed.

THANKFULLY, due to everything everyone’s already mentioned, that’s incredibly unlikely. But yes, I have thought the same as you from time to time.

Thank you, this is exactly it, all of it!!

Thanks all, you’ve given me the reassurance I was seeking!

I don’t worry about it quite simply because it’s way out if my control. I don’t worry about stuff that’s beyond me. If it stops being available I’ll just be fat again. I was fat before, I could be fat again. Less healthy obviously and I’d be grouchy about all the crap things that came with being overweight but meh, I’m just happy that I can take my MJ and count my lucky stars I can afford it every month without having to sell a kidney or something.

Periperi2025 · 20/06/2026 20:24

I think it is irritational to think that WLI would suddenly stop being prescribed. These drugs have been around a long time and it is only now because of clinical trials and lost of evidence that they have been used for weight loss. The evidence exists now.

I worry more about temporary supply chain issues with my HRT becoming unavailable more than mounjaro, which wouldn't be ideal, but definitely wouldn't be as bad. I'm also on apixaban for to a clotting disorder, so wouldn't want that to be unavailable either.

I like many people alive today would fail to thrive in a post apocalyptic future, but would live a bit longer than many others.

WhatAMarvelousTune · 20/06/2026 20:27

But can you think of any other extremely effective drug/group of drugs that has become less available over time (excluding ones where some previously unknown serious side effect is found)?

Agree.

They'll get cheaper better ramd more widely available

UniChildQuestions · 20/06/2026 20:36

Im still gutted with the price increase. I so wasnt expecting to have to pay so much more. And losing the 5th dose too... this has become really tricky for me already!

Overthinkers unite!

Just because it’s irrational, doesn’t mean you can’t/wont think about it. Try to spin it the other way - this could change the world. modern medicine is wonderful!

MisseyLurker · 21/06/2026 12:34

If they weren’t available and you had been on them for some time, you would adapt. You would do what you need to and ensure that you keep up the good habits and don’t return to the bad. I know, because I was stopped being prescribed at the start of this year because my BMI was deemed too low so I had to just go it alone.

I’m still at the same weight as when I stopped and I’m 6 months in. Still in the same routine, enjoying a treat now and again, keeping my movement up and my protein high to ensure I don’t over do it.

PearlsTeapot · 21/06/2026 13:10

I would hate to get fat again after feeling what it's like to be this lower weight (still fat but 7 stone less of me!). So I hope I can be on them forever.

Feelblue · 21/06/2026 13:34

A few people will have to stop if they get certain illnesses will need to stop such as gall bladder issues.

health systems will want steady supply. Many people are on lifelong drugs - including preventative such as blood pressure. There may be times of shortage for example what is happening in the Middle East is causing them due to shipping. However I can’t see them all being withdrawn unless there is a serious side effect when taking for everyone or certain people would outweigh weight gain.

AWomanOfWealthAndTaste · 21/06/2026 19:12

No. It's so obvious to me that it's going to go the other way.
