Wegovy or Mounjaro: experiences choosing between weight loss injections

Wegovy or Mounjaro??? Hoping to start very soon but unsure which would be best for me? Is the administration the same? Please help me decide. I'm aware of cost difference but I don't know anyone in real life who I can ask. Please tell me what made you choose which one you use. Thanks

The admin is the same, assuming you mean ordering from an online pharmacy.

I chose Mounjaro, in 2024, because at the time it was cheaper and it is more effective on average than Wegovy with fewer side effects. Now, Mounjaro is significantly more expensive, if I was starting now I think I might give Wegovy a try and see if I got on with it. Long term it would be cheaper if it worked well. I had a significant amount of weight to lose, plus always considered staying on the medication longer term for maintenance, so I knew I would be on the medication for years not months.

You can get the starting dose of Wegovy for just a bit over £50 for a month's supply so worth seeing if it works out. The cheapest starting dose for Mounjaro is just over £100 for the month.

I'm leaning towards Wegovy, mainly due to costs. Especially if I need to be on it long term for maintenance.

i think your approach is sensible- I think it will take me around 6 months to lose 3 stone but I want to take it for maintenance for 2-3 years … and this is the current advice

apparently the worst thing to do is start then stop, regain the weight and start again

If I were starting again I would try wegovy first. I used mounjaro and then tried switching but had no effect from wegovy although I know I can maintain using wegovy so when the weight loss is done I will switch to wegovy if I need something for maintenance.

However my friend started on wegovy and is having great success. So its worth trying the cheaper option first in my opinion.

I went with wegovy, partly because I don't have a lot of weight to lose, so didn't want to lose too quickly, and partly because I've already been working for a long time to improve my eating habits. I know a lot of people find the appetite supression very strong on MJ, to the point they can't eat a 'normal' meal, and I wanted to be able to keep my healthy meal habits (it's the snacking and chocolate that are a problem for me)
Another factor was taking an oral contraception, which is fine with wegovy but not with MJ. MJ has a greater effect on slowing down the digestive system and I believe for that reason you can't rely on the pill being absorbed as it should. I don't know if that would impact any other medications. I didn't want to switch types as I take the pill to manage PMDD.

I’ve been looking into this a lot myself

From what I’ve read — if you start with MJ, Wegovy often won’t do much for you

If you’ve never taken WLI, Wegovy is generally pretty effective (not as fast as MJ but fast loss is not usually particularly healthy), & you may be able to successfully switch to MJ if needed with good results

So given current costs etc it makes sense to start with Wegovy & see how it works for you

The Wegovy pill has just been approved so it will be interesting to see if that brings costs down
