Where do you get rid of yours?

My local chemist doesn't have a sharps disposal service.

My council does a collection, I’ve also dropped off at a hospital before.

ChocHotolate · 07/06/2026 12:57

The council may take them, they do for my diabetic mum.
I know that some people have had real problems getting sharps collected there was a post a while ago where posters joked about burying full sharps bins in the foundations of their extensions.
Sadly the companies which supply the sharps and bins are not made to be responsible for their collection which is what I think should happen

ChocHotolate · 07/06/2026 12:58

I have also had people try to drop them off to me in A&E and urgent care. We won’t accept them

SilenceInside · 07/06/2026 12:59

Your local authority website should have a section about sharps disposal and as PP have said there may be the option to organise a collection. I haven’t tried to dispose of mine yet, but I am resigned to the idea that they might have to live in the bottom of wardrobe for the rest of time!

Perianth · 07/06/2026 12:59

Definitely worth checking your council website - mine collect them for free.

What is the betting though that people are just chucking them in their domestic bin - there are millions on these drugs, officially and unofficially. If it's not a problem yet, I'm sure it will become one soon enough.

My drs surgery takes mine.

WeAllHaveWings · 07/06/2026 13:21

The receptionist at my GP surgery took mine.

I’d tried them on phone before, tried council, recycling centre (that takes needles found in public places), local pharmacies, my Mounjaro provider and they all said no.

Took it in with me (it is just a small 0.25L one) when I had my annual checkup and asked receptionist it she could help point me in direction of where to dispose and told her all the places I tried and she said as it was so small she’d take it for me.

I’ve been very careful with my second sharps bin and only put needles in, no full syringes , no outer caps so they take up much less space and the bin should last for years before having to deal with again.

morbidcuriosity · 07/06/2026 17:27

Double check your work. My place of work we have sharps bins dotted around as a few diabetic people. I collect mine up and take them in and pop in them bins.

I can't find anyone to take mine. I've asked the council, my GP surgery and 3 local pharmacies.

Papergirl1968 · 07/06/2026 20:34

I work at a GP surgery and we take them. We have a special wheelie bin kept in a locked storeroom that we throw the container in. Patients just have to sign and date the front of the sharps box.

Farinaferrari · 08/06/2026 00:22

I put mine in an empty shampoo bottle with the lid screwed on ,tried to do it through proper way had me jumping through hoops, so no sorry they go in the bin.

PinkSkiesLemonade · 08/06/2026 00:54

What do you all do with finished pens? I have quite a collection!

Edited

My chemist told me to wrap the used needle in a bit of kitchen roll and put it in my bin!! Obviously l don't do that.
