Does an alternative to the injections exist?

I’m 43, have the Mirena coil in and at 5’ 5.5’’ I weigh 11stone. I need to lose just over a stone but I’m finding it very hard.
I know I’m not heavy enough for the injections, but has anyone found any supplements that act in a similar way?
I just feel hungry all the flipping time, and think I about food a lot. I know what I have to do, but I get so disheartened because it’s so slow and then I go off the boil.

If there was anything that was more effective than a placebo then it would also be a licensed medication, unfortunately.

Some people find that a keto style protein focussed low carb diet helps with balancing blood sugar and avoiding the spikes that drive the excessive hunger. Then there’s the insoluble fibre supplements like chia and psyllium husk that might help you to feel fuller for longer. But again, if there was definitive evidence that it worked then it would be a recognised weight loss treatment. You might find they help you as an individual though.

Thank you-I know I am desperately clutching at straws. I also know how much better I feel when I focus on eating more chicken/fish, vegetables and fruit. I just can’t seem to sustain it for very long x

Berberine is said to be helpful for some people. A friend said it helped her feel less hungry. Although she has since switched to the jabs…

Otherwise - concentrate on protein and fibre and drinking lots of water. If you are hungry eat. But make it protein. Avoid ultra processed foods.

It is hard to sustain it though. I totally get that.

5 foot 5 and 11 stone is a bmi of over 25. So you could get the jabs if thats what you wanted.

OP I don't know whether your height and weight is enough to 'count' but there are a couple of prescribers who will prescribe 'off label' for BMI between 25-27, there's a specific thread with lots of info about this. I'm doing this with Voy. I've been trying and failing for a good while to lose weight, and I'm basically now doing what I was trying to do before (calorie count, high protein and high fiber, gym, steps, good sleep etc) the difference is now I'm able to stick to the lower calories consistently so it's working.
I'm on a low dose and hoping to use it short term to lose, and then come off them but keep the good habits to try and maintain as best I can.

@Wallabyone look into mysimba. I have lost 4.5 stone so far

SilenceInside · 06/06/2026 10:16

@Rainydays26 what was your BMI when you initially got MySimba prescribed? The OPs BMI is about 25.5 so not significantly overweight or obese.

Oh I missed that sorry my bmi was 30.
I doubt theres any injections or tablets that will be given for 25.5 bmi

There are a couple of legitimate online pharmacies who may prescribe WLI off licence to people with a BMI of 25 plus. And the much more expensive private clinics who offer what they call “micro-dosing” where they decant the medication from the pens into syringes and prescribe to people, who may not even be overweight at all, a smaller dose.

There really isn't. That's why these drugs have actually revolutionized medicine.

kooljegs · 20/06/2026 09:20

I was the same weight and height and got MJ, I’ve lost 20lb in 4 months. Very easily, which is the key bit! It took very little mental effort. Life changing, honestly.
