GLP-1 has turned me into a ‘normal’ drinker.

I’ve been taking mounjaro for a few weeks now. One of my main motivations was what I had heard about its impact on people’s drinking. I don’t drink every day but I do drink too much and I think about how much I am going to drink a lot. I don’t have ‘food noise’, I have ‘alcohol noise’ and it’s gone. I have had a drink (when it’s been offered to me) but I’m genuinely ambivalent. It’s amazing. I don’t want to stay on MJ just to control my drinking but I’m so relieved that there is something that exists which can take away my preoccupation with booze.
I am assuming it will come back when I stop but I wondered if there is any ‘learning’ going on in my brain given I am clearly not being rewarded by drink in the same way. Has anyone been on WLIs and found they drink less when they come off them?

I’m going to post this on the alcohol support board too so apols if you are seeing a duplicate.

I’m overweight but not obese and been considering WLI

Very interested to hear the anti-alcohol effect. I drink far too much and it’s a significant % of my calorie intake

The effect seems to vary from person to person, so I don’t thinks it’s nailed on. However, there seems to be a decent chance it will affect your drinking.

I've been on it on and off for 3 years and it really helped me moderate my alcohol consumption

I was never a big drinker, but any desire I had was just turned off on day one. Haven’t wanted a single drink since. (Also applied to my Diet Coke addiction!)

What a great additional side effect. How do you find your desire to drink changes when you’re not actually on the WLIs?

I signed up earlier today for this very reason. If I can control my alcohol intake, I control my food intake, maintain exercise levels etc. I was ready to knock weekday drinking on the head next week after a turbulent few months, and start eating and exercising properly again. And I just figured something that could help with the food AND alcohol noise has got to be worth a punt to give me the best chance of success. Here’s hoping!

Good luck… let us know how you get on! I’m pretty blown away by it. As I said in my OP, I don’t have food noise anyway so feeling full when I haven’t eaten is a little odd but not mind blowing. However, Not thinking about alcohol is genuinely life changing for me…

I think in your situation, I would look to get some support either from AA or some kind of CBT therapy so that you can learn techniques to cope with not drinking.

Thenif you don’t want to be on Mj long term, it will mean you have changed so that if the ‘drink’ noise comes back, you will have strategies/behaviours that are now normal to you, that will help you cope

sounds like it’s giving you a kickstart so good luck with the rest of your journey

Thank you. Yes, I think you’re right.

It’s definitely more than just the calories / sugar. A LOT of my brain space was taken up by thoughts of whether to drink, how much to drink, when to drink etc. now it’s gone, vanished from my mind. It’s amazing.

Like I said initially, it interrupts the dopamine pathway so you aren't getting that pleasure or reward from addictive behaviours including alcohol.

Brenda782 · 01/06/2026 21:42

This honestly sounds really familiar to me. I didn’t realise how much mental space food and drinking habits were taking up until things quietened down a bit on Mounjaro. It’s been the first time in years I’ve felt more in control instead of constantly thinking about the next treat or glass of wine.

mondaytosunday · 01/06/2026 21:56

My friend is on Mounjaro and it’s has had no impact on her drinking whatsoever. Still a minimum case a week gal.

Greenfingers37 · 01/06/2026 22:07

It’s had a similar effect on me regarding alcohol too. I was becoming a seriously heavy drinker and it worried me but I just couldn’t moderate.
I’m only in week 3 of my MJ journey but already it’s had a huge impact on my drinking habits. Don’t get me wrong, I can still enjoy a glass of wine or a cider socially but after a couple, I’ve had enough. This is unheard of for me! It’s a massive bonus that I didn’t expect.

Yeah, it’s amazing having that feeling of just flicking the switch. A few weeks ago I thought about wine a LOT, note I couldn’t care less and the only thing that’s different is the tiny injection of the lowest dose of MJ once a week. It’s me but my brain is working differently. 🤯

I was aware before I started MJ that it doesn’t ‘work’ for everyone re. alcohol so I’m very grateful it did for me. Must be hard to lose weight drinking that much wine though

I’m on week 3 too. I’ve had a few beers (as in one or two on a few occasions). Wine makes me feel ill.

usually once I’ve had one my mind is racing to engineer more drinking but not now I’m on MJ.

Has anyone had this effect with Weygovy? I am about to start and alcohol has been a problem for me, as well as food, which I would like to go away !

I'd love to be able to have one or two and then not want the rest of the bottle and another! Although I can easliy not have any, starting is the issue, and I'd like to just have one or two with a meal or friends without getting carried away.
