Weight gain after coil and stopping regular Mounjaro

I lost a lot of weight on mounjaro, around 35kg. Over 18-24 months. I have not been using regularly for probably around 9 months. Since I had my coil in I have put on around 5ish kg and just find it so hard to lose. Even if I dose it seems the food noise comes back after a few days. The initial weight loss I didn’t really have to try. I’m not sure if it me and just a willpower thing or the coil. I do feel really bloated a lot sometimes my size 10 jeans are super tight so there they are absolutely fine. I’m not sure if I should start using a ‘proper dose’ like 5mg for a regular period is worth it. My concern is a don’t want to be reliant on it forever.

I can't comment on mounjaro, but I gained weight and lost some hair after being given the Mirena coil to counteract thickening of the lining of the womb. (I'm in my 60s.). I was also on combined HRT. The consultant told me to stay on it until we saw how I tolerated the coil.

Once I switched to Elleste Solo 1mg, I began to be able to lose a bit of a weight again and the hair loss stopped. Mind you, I'd also been affected by stress so far as the hair loss is concerned.

I still have the coil and I'm also using localised oestrogen. I suspect that I should really be on a higher dose of oestrogen tablet, but I'm scared to ask about that in case I muck up the womb lining again.

I've been taking collagen and creatine as well. I think my hair is looking reasonably thick again, though there's still one thinner patch near the front. It's better, but still not quite as good as the rest.

Sorry - this doesn't answer your question fully, but I thought that it might be of some relevance to you.

Is it a copper coil or a hormonal IUS like Mirena? If the latter, a lot of people really don't get on with it. If you don't want to be on WLI long-term then perhaps consider changing your contraception / HRT (depending on why you have it) first.

Mounjaro is a gut hormone that makes you feel fuller for longer as it slows gut emptying . It acts on the appetite receptors in your brain reducing cravings and the urge to overeat. It controls the release of insulin reducing blood sugar spikes that cause hunger pangs. All the above makes you uninterested in food, so you eat less and lose weight.

when you stop taking the drug you do not have those restrictions so will eat ‘normally’ (which is too much and not healthy amounts as you have almost certainly developed insulin resistance) and will therefore put weight back on.

It is no different to 1000s of other drugs. ie blood pressure meds. Take them , high BP becomes lower of normal. Stop taking them, BP increases .

I maintain on 5mg after a 10st loss 2 years ago.

I'm happy to take levothyroxine every day to compensate for my inactive thyroid gland. I'm delighted to have been able to stop taking the 2 blood pressure medications I needed before I lost 94kg, with the aid of GLP-1 injections.

I have found that my lupus and rheumatoid arthritis have simmered down since Mounjaro helped me get on top of the chronic inflammation that had build up over the past 50 years and am happy to keep on taking it forever knowing it will also protect my heart, blood vessels, kidneys, liver and brain.

It's expensive, but so are a lot of other much less effective remedies for insulin resistance and an out of control immune system.

I guess I wasn’t clear but I managed to sort of maintain with ‘micro dosing’ until the coil was in (it’s a Mirena) I am wondering if it’s that or just my body being less sensitive to mounjaro than it was. I never needed big doses and lost most of my weight at 2.5mg

It's not strictly speaking a published side effect but many women report weight gain on Mirena. Is it contraception or HRT? I have loved mine and only had them removed to conceive my children but many women really don't get on with them. You could have it removed and see if things settle down.

Contraception I think it’s the best option for me in that sense and apart from this possible weight gain and a few spots it’s been ok. I just probably need to be a bit stricter with myself and up my exercise.
