I knlw of two people who have lost weigh as I have. One has lost around 5 stone on MJ and one around 10st plus after a sleeve. They both decided to have a tummy tuck before they had lost the weight. The one on MJ stopped taking it and put 5l on over Xmas.

I have been overweight my whole life. I now hve lost nearly 5 stone. I need to lose 1.5 stone. I have an apron stomach and really think surgery is the only option. I will stay on MJ as long as I need to to make sure gain weight.

In would love a tummy tuck but I do t m wk how t justify the money and the disruptions from surgery and also the guilt of sending money k myself.
part of me feels with the loose skin and apron ad it was my fault I was over weight.

what are people’s views

I would never do this. It's risky by itself and if you regain weight can cause serious issues.

If I was you I would wait until you’ve finished your weight loss. Give it 2 years to see if you can keep the weight loss stable and for any skin that might spring back to do so naturally, and then reassess. So far as the cost of a surgery is concerned that’s a personal decision. You also need to weigh up the risks of such a surgery. Make sure you do your research on providers and outcomes, that way you can decide if it’s something for you.

You don’t have to put up with something that’s distressing you or causing you significant difficulties just because you think you deserve to be punished for doing it to yourself. It’s not a moral failing to have been overweight and to now have loose skin issues.

I have lost a lot of weight with Mounjaro, and I am planning on waiting at least as long as it’s taken to lose the weight before making any decisions. It takes a long time for skin to regenerate, and it takes longer the older you are. I will keep my weight stable and work on fitness and strength during that time, and then see where I’m at. If I think it would make a big difference to my life then I would consider surgery. I’d be saving towards it during that time as well. I might decide it’s too expensive and the recovery too much, but I will consider that when I’m at the point of deciding whether surgery is a possibility at all.

Congratulations on your weight loss. 🎉

Don’t think of blaming yourself for your healthy body but learn to love yourself as you are instead of comparing yourself unfavourably to others. I’m sure it’s really not as bad as you think and some of it will disappear naturally, if you keep the weight off.

All surgery carries risks and unless it’s essential to health, I wouldn’t risk having unnecessary surgery myself.

I would recommend starting strength training and fill some of that area with muscle as it will fill the skin.

Ive haven’t lost a huge amount of weight but have had 5 pelvic operations inc 2 csecs and had an awful apron. I’ve been strength training for less than 6 mths and my apron is slowly reducing. It’s a weird process as the area will go very wobbly for a bit and then it will be visibly smaller (I have developed a weird way of measuring it with my fingers don’t ask Grin).

After having had so many surgeries already on the area the thought of having flesh removed just for cosmetic reasons makes me feel a bit queasy. I think it’s probably because I have a rough idea of how painful it would be recovering as I don’t feel that way about other cosmetic surgery.

You lot are absolute queens 👸 I have had the worst week and I love what you all have said and I didn’t particularly articulate myself very well.

I 46 and know that the skin is stretched but I am now 11.5 stone I think my heaviest was 16.5 stone. I think I need to be 9st12 that will be a 6 stone loss and BMI 23.

Realistically most people don’t have surgery after weight loss, I think I have been misguided by my sample of 2 people

I had one after losing 5 stone. It has been wonderful for my confidence and general ease of motion. I used a surgeon recommended by medical people who I knew and trusted.

I'll turn 69 in a few months. I've lost 94kg (14.8 stone?) over the past 4 years.

My dress size has shrunk from size 36 at the start of 2022 to size 12 today, I've lost 20 inches off my waist, and there was a point, around the end of the second year when my skin started to hang in pleats and folds.

Two years later, and the rate of weight loss has slowed from around 3kg/month when I was still morbidly obese, to 1kg last month at BMI 26. I'm not very tall (160cm) and don't want to reduce my calories below 1400/day so I'm happy with the slower rate of loss. An unexpected benefit of the slower rate of weight loss has been that my skin started to adapt. The dangly folds on my back have all been reabsorbed, and my face no longer hangs in deep creases and bulldog jowls.

Yesterday I wore a halter neck top to garden in the sunshine. When I wore it last summer it was tight, and I had to tuck loose skin into the top of it under my arms and across my back. Yesterday the only problem was that it was a bit too big.

So before you blow thousands on a very painful procedure, do give it at least 4 years. If my ancient skin can adapt the chances are good that yours probably will too.

It’s a very personal decision, I have lots of lose skin but would not surgery as 1 I can’t afford it and 2 I’m old.
I do agree with pp to wait and let your weight settle a good long while before deciding.
Having skin surgery is not selfish at all.

redboxerclub · 26/04/2026 11:33

This is so so helpful I’m so happy I posted.

@timeforteaandcakes
I’m glad you think it is not selfish that is helpful

@sevenseasicksailorsonaship that is amazing and great news for me

I lost 6 and a half stone, now 9 stone, id a huge tummy, with exercise and ensuring I ate my protein it’s now flat with no over hang. It takes work, but id rather do that than have it cut off.

timeforteaandcakes · 27/04/2026 06:11

I would suggest joining some facebook groups and pages for tummy tucks, there you will learn about different experiences and what’s us realistic to expect.
my arms are the worse tbh and I went on those pages and peoples results and pain levels really put me off.
Tummies are not as bad as arms though.
Another point on selfishness, it’s actually better to flip it over and think it’s selfish to not improve yourself and your health for your children’s and families sake. Your kids deserve the very best physical healthy mum they can and if flapping skin in preventing you being your best then it’s a good idea to have skin surgery.
It’s not about cosmetics it about functional movement and being free to do things like run and lift with the kids.
