Collagen supplements - any use?

I clearly clicked on an advert and now I'm being inundated for ads for Elevate Collagen supplements. Talk about the hard sell.
I assume there are a myriad of products out there but the science seems pretty iffy. Anyone with personal experience of particular brands good and bad ?

I've been taking collagen (ancient and brave true) for the past 18 months and I think its been positive so plan to continue. My skin is looking good. I've been taking other vitamins and supplements too so they are hopefully all doing some good. It was a doctor who suggested I give it ago.

I’ve been taking collagen for about 3 months, and my nails and hair are amazing on it. I’ve always had flakey nails, but now they’re super long and strong. And my hair is growing faster than I can get it cut.

I started taking it to protect my joints and I have no idea whether it’s doing any good for them. But I figure it probably is if its visible effects are so obvious.

Thank you. I should add, that it's being linked heavily to the use of WLI hence posting here.

@ThirdStorm did your doctor recommend it because you are using WLI?

I've been experiencing some possible peri symptoms and "at my age" mid 40s she felt it might be something worth trying. For me WLI have only been part of my get healthy plan and the collagen, vitamins and supplements are part of a wider looking after myself plan!

There is evidence that taking a collagen supplement is beneficial. I’ve been taking it for a few months now and, tbh, haven’t noticed any improvement in anything 🤷‍♀️

MyCatHasStaff · 17/04/2026 19:35

I've been taking collagen (Nutrition Geeks) for about 5 weeks. I has some pain and stiffness in my knee every morning and that has pretty much gone. My skin looks better and I feel less stiff all over.
Edited to add: I had quite severe psoriasis which is now very much under control.

TicketyBoo11 · 17/04/2026 19:37

Collagen 2 is the one for your joints. Did my own medical research and 40mg is the optimal dose. Holland and Barrett do a type 2 collagen at 40mg. It’s an easy to take capsule. I have osteoarthritis in various joints, it’s got good reviews and I’ve only been taking it a while. I was taking Ancient and Brave true collagen powder but it transpired it wasn’t what I needed. It pays to be informed, your IG feed will be awash with the trendy suggestions if you’re not. 😊

Oh this is funny. I've been taking collagen in my coffee (Nutrition Geeks Glow Up powder) for about two months now. I have no idea if it's doing me any good but I figure it cant be doing my joints any harm! I like the taste of it in my coffee and it's cheap enough (buy in bulk and it's about £13 a month). It also provides protein which is good too. I've committed to it for six months then I'll reassess but as I'm 40 on WLI I generally think it can't help. I have good nails and hair anyway, fast growing, so no way to tell.

What is WLI?

MsRosewater · 17/04/2026 19:52

The actual evidence, not funded by companies that flog collagen is meh! Your body breaks down collagen into amino acids just as it does to tuna, eggs, chicken ,
other protein. It doesn’t get used to make your skin better just because that’s its origin

Taking collagen supplements is no more beneficial than upping your protein intake naturally or as a supplement… it’s just more expensive

Edited to add link:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/abs/pii/S0002934325002839

“However, in the subgroup meta-analysis by funding source, studies not receiving funding from pharmaceutical companies revealed no effect of collagen supplements for improving skin hydration, elasticity, and wrinkles, while those receiving funding from pharmaceutical companies did show significant effects. Similarly, high-quality studies revealed no significant effect in all categories, while low-quality studies revealed a significant improvement in elasticity.”

Fizbosshoes · 17/04/2026 19:55

I saw the same on Instagram, basically insinuating collagen was a natural glp-1 which I was extremely dubious....but also curious about.
I dont need WLI but would love to be half a stone thinner (bmi 21, but im short so look much chunkier)
...but most collagen articles talk about hair skin or nails...
Im.48 so target audience

SmallTreeDeepRoots · 17/04/2026 20:07

I’ve been taking the nutrition geeks one for 5-6 weeks. Mostly interested in joint health and my legs joints do feel easier, although that could be due to increased exercise and some weight loss. Not noticed hair and nail benefits yet. But the main benefit for me is that it’s an easy and quick source of protein in the morning. Not a breakfast person.

alwaysusethebiglight · 17/04/2026 20:21

The BBC podcast Sliced Bread has just broadcast an episode on collagen, updating their last one. It’s really interesting, the one on Testosterone is good as well.

Kazzaa46 · 19/04/2026 15:18

I started taking it at the same time as starting MJ so I’ve had 7 months using the geeks collagen.

I have not had any benefits as far as I can see, my hair isn’t any better or my skin. I’ve lost 3 stone and loose skin is only minor so maybe it’s helped with that but I don’t know. My face looks older from the weight loss with more wrinkles so hasn’t helped with that.

I’m dubious about it’s effectiveness but continue to take it in the hope it may suddenly do something 🤣

PearlsTeapot · 19/04/2026 19:59

You're like me @Kazzaa46 optimistic!

TheChosenTwo · 19/04/2026 20:06

I read up about it after I’d been on WLI for a few months but decided there was a lot of conflicting information and as many studies saying there was proven benefits as there were saying there weren’t.
i eat a pretty balanced diet anyway so just continued doing that.
there was so much choice and it seemed to be very trendy on Instagram - people shilling so many brands which made me immediately sceptical anyway tbh.
My skin and hair are already good as they are.

rockstarshoes · 19/04/2026 20:09

I used Ancient & Brave & really liked it! I felt great taking it & the dentist was impressed with the state of my gums! I know not top of everyone’s list of effects but it must have been doing something!
