Mounjaro or Wegovy - which is best?!

MamaBee22 · 04/04/2026 10:42

I am around 17st so have quite a lot to loose (6/7stone ideally).

Have been thinking about weight loss injections for a while, but so much information to take it, I'm finding it hard to choose between MJ or Wegovy so would love to hear personal experiences please.

Wegovy would be much more affordable to me (could afford MJ at a push but the price difference seems crazy!) but have read it isn't as effective as Mounjaro and I'm desperate to get started and get the weight off.

Any advice would be great. Thank you.

@Shorkie i think you’re the first person ive seen who has come off MJ with insulin resistant PCOS - I’m the same, I used to have maybe one or two periods a year and for the first time since I was 14 I’ve got a fairly reliable monthly cycle. Have your periods remained stable since you’ve been off it? And how did you find the cravings and carb consumption?
sorry to ask but I’ve always been a bit curious about what might happen if I ever came off it. I don’t plan on coming off it ever (I’m aware that one day they may just say no!) because it’s the only thing that’s ever helped regulate my hormones and my worry that it will all just come flooding back the minute I stop.

Shorkie · 05/04/2026 13:44

@TheChosenTwo
no need to apologise, I had exactly the same worries and fears coming off MJ. Hopefully you never have to 🤞🏼But the concerns are totally valid.
Luckily my periods have remained stable since I’ve been off it, which I’m really glad about, it’s so nice to just know when my period is going to come, I’m still pleasantly surprised every month when it’s on time and a normal period lol.
Cravings and carb consumption is no where near the same as it was before, I used to get such intense cravings and hunger that it made me miserable. It definitely creeps back in sometimes (leading up to a period, or during period week) but overall it’s night and day, I just have to exercise the self-control bit which I find hard sometimes without the MJ to help but overall after learning to say no to things for just over a year on MJ, that is a lot easier. (Although I think it has a lot more to do with reduced or non-existent symptoms of insulin resistance more than the mental side).
I used to feel really intensely driven by cravings to the point I’d feel a bit mental, like depriving a hungry lion of a fresh juicy steak 😂(which sounds a bit silly but I’m sure you’ll understand where I’m coming from with insulin resistance) and I can hand on heart say I’ve not felt like that since before MJ which is such a relief and really freeing. I was so worried when I came off it but really not much has changed.
I do actually have an unopened wegovy pen in the fridge that I panic bought when I couldn’t afford MJ but decided not to open it. My clothes feel a little uncomfortable at the moment (had a couple of holidays recently) and I have been tempted to crack it open but tbh seeing others experiences of it, kind of puts me off. But maybe I should give it a go just on a low dose and see what happens.

smithypants · 05/04/2026 14:27

I am on MJ. Chatting to loads of my nurse mates and they have some hacks to save money.

Buy needles from Amazon and get the 5th dose out of each pen. They say it might not be the exact amount left over. Also if you want 5mg you can get the 10mg pen but half the amount you extract using the bought needles.

None of this is recommended by any pharmacist but there’s loads of YouTube videos out there saying same thing

MoneyJo · 05/04/2026 19:50

Sadly the 5th dose won't exist from this month @smithypants

I can give to as many people as I like inbox me if you are interested x

I started mounjaro at the end of August 2025, 1 week before the price increases.
I still chose mounjaro because the research I read showed that it was more effective for blood sugar & insulin control which is one of the main reasons I started taking it.

To keep the costs lower I've been taking low doses from higher strength pens - for example I'm taking 6.25mg from a 12.5mg pen which gives me 10 doses and I'm comfortable with the risk of using the pen past 30 days.

@Theresnorush you will probably be better off looking on the monj.co.uk or igovy websites for discounts, because the £100 discount from the pharmacy Catcopper is referring you to is one that has the highest prices to begin with.

Clearingaspace · 05/04/2026 23:48

wow, some amazing results on here!!

Did your vision resolve @Dontgive ? Interesting that both seemed to have pros and cons for you.

jocktamsonsbairn · 06/04/2026 00:45

I’m on wegovy and have lost 2 stone in 3 months. It has taken way all the food noise and I am more focused on eating the good stuff.
no real side effects. Give it a go!

JMSA · 06/04/2026 01:43

Mounjaro. Even my pharmacist said it’s the superior drug.

AgnesMcDoo · 06/04/2026 07:02

MJ us much more effective.

when the prices rise I switched to Wendy and put weight on straight away so switched back.

Biggles27 · 06/04/2026 09:39

I’ve not read the thread but this is my understanding

They work slightly differently. For me, I have significant blood sugar regulation issues so mounjaro is better and I’ve found my blood sugars way more stable on it

If you’re starting, it’s apparently easier to switch from Wegovy to Mounjaro than the other way around (I’ve heard lots of people say they’ve tried W and had to switch back to mj as the W just wasn’t working for them)

I’d try Wegovy first as if it doesn’t really help you’ve got somewhere to go

And anyone who says it’s cheating literally has no idea what they are talking about. Ignore them. I could say quite a lot about this and my own personal experience of un medicated weight loss (10 stone lost ‘naturally’ so yes I do know what I’m talking about)

I wish you every success and well done for taking the first steps towards a more healthier life xxx

flirtybird · 06/04/2026 10:38

I used MJ, I was 13st 5lb and now I am down to 8st 8lb.

I will say though that my appetite has gone completely and I have to force myself to eat. I need to stop the injections now but am scared of putting the weight back on.

While I do look better and my overall health is better I do look gaunt. I had to leave work early today as I was going dizzy and felt really rough.

Thank you for the detailed response, it’s certainly food for thought. I’m amazed that the insulin resistance symptoms have reversed, I wondered if it were possible so this is incredible to read.
i had 3 weeks without MJ (my mistake when trying to reorder and needed to book a verification call but wasn’t going to be home for ages to do it) and every week I put on 3lbs, I was eating more as I was much hungrier although not reaching for crisps or crap, I was still disciplined in terms of quality of food but I was just eating more. I was still well within a healthy BMI range but I was quite shocked and how quickly the number was increasing!
Really pleased to hear your cycle has remained pretty constant too, it’s such a novelty to me that I know when I’m going to be on my period.
I guess you’ve got the WG if you decide to go for it, could you afford to keep buying it if you got on well with it? Or are you overall aiming to be unmedicated?

CheekyRaven · 06/04/2026 12:09

I'm on wegovy and have been using the 0.5 dose for 5 months.
Not much hair loss, but I have fine hair.
Price was the decider for me too. I've lost 16lbs. (Was 14st 4lbs). Sort of stuck now. If i coukd afford MJ, I would. Good luck on your journey.

I’m on the top dose and have to force myself NOT to eat 😄
We’re all different and though I am very thankful for Mounjaro, I do wish my appetite suppression was better.

Gigglydancybox · 06/04/2026 15:56

I’ve been on WG since the 3rd January. I’ve lost 32.5lbs. I have 500 grams to lose and then I will have dropped 4 stone brackets (started in the 12 and almost in the 9). I’ve gone from size 16 to size 10. Have had barely any side effects and still have all my hair. I’m losing around 2lbs a week.

It is cheaper elsewhere but what I pay for is consistency and reliability.
My pen has always come next day, has never been damaged or come in damaged packaging like it has when it has come from some of these cheaper providers. I pay for the peace of mind and also the fact that they check in on me on a regular basis and also keep in contact with my GP to make sure that the medication is still safe for me to take.
So yes you could pay really cheap for it with another provider but there's also a saying. "Pay cheap pay twice"

So, you've assumed that because the price is cheap then the service must be crap?

The 'cheap' providers I've used are some of the biggest pharmacies, probably including yours - e.g. Lloyds, IQ Doctor, Pharmacy2U, Bolt, Numan, MedExpress, Pillsorted, Lotus.

Because of switching, I got 15mg from for £139 from Numan because of an error on their website.

Some of them also send additional items (sharps bin, pack of 100 wipes, 20 needles) for free (MedExpress, Lotus)

I've been taking MJ for nearly 8 months and have swapped every month since the 2nd month and have never received a damaged parcel or pen from any of them - so why the scaremongering?

You really shouldn't assume a discounted offer means poor service.

Paying more doesn't automatically guarantee anything.

SilenceInside · 15/04/2026 12:30

@Catcooper25uk

You say:

"My pen has always come next day" - so has mine, currently with SwiftDoctor but many other pharmacies do this.

"[My pen] has never been damaged or come in damaged packaging" - neither have any of mine, from any of the pharmacies that I've used.

"They check in on me on a regular basis" - many pharmacies do this, including ones at the cheaper end. All pharmacies must be contactable for patients that have queries or issues.

"[They] also keep in contact with my GP to make sure that the medication is still safe for me to take" - yep, you guessed it, so do many other pharmacies, it's very standard for pharmacies to notify your GP, or check your NHS summary care record.

So in my case it has always been "pay cheap, pay once" which is the ideal result for me.

I would also point out to anyone reading this that @Catcooper25uk 's posts are not offering neutral advice or even just an opinion. She is attempting to persuade people to use her referral code, which will earn her significant discounts.

I never said it automatically does but when ive been on it over a year and had experiences with many different pharmacies where some of them have come damaged or dodgy packaging I think I am quite entitled to share my experience as is anyone else on this forum. Its not scaremongering its sharing my own lived experiences.

Haha you are so funny. It doesn't make a difference to me if anyone uses my referral code as I can afford to pay full price every time and have been doing for some time.
Also are you saying I'm lying about my lived experiences with other pharmacies that have actually happened to me personally? Because 1 thing i am not is a liar. But yeah have a lovely day. 😘

toastandegg · 15/04/2026 12:45

I’ve been on Wegovy since September (not tried mj) and have lost around 10kilos - it’s steady loss and other than nausea the first few weeks has been painless overall

BoredZelda · 15/04/2026 12:46

I found MJ far more effective but not to the point where it was worth the increase in price.

Now you're saying 'some pharmacies', but your first response to me was all cheap pharmacies.

You've just taken offence because I pointed out that your £100 referral code isn't actually a great deal... because it isn't.

As already posted by SilenceInside, everything you're getting from your pharmacy is also available from other pharmacies at a cheaper price.

@Catcooper25uk I can afford to pay full price every time too. That's not relevant to anything. My point is for people to be aware of the context of people's posts. You will financially benefit if you can persuade people to use your code. That's not a judgement, it's a simple fact. That means you have a vested interest in emphasising that your current pharmacy is better than others. Your advice is not neutral. This is not the same thing as calling you a liar. Clearly.
