I can’t stop buying clothes

Is it just me?

I have lost nine stones and I can’t stop buying clothes.

After years of hiding myself in whatever would fit and making do I am now a clothes addict.

Thank god for Vinted but it is still getting ridiculous and I’m running out of wardrobe space and clothes hangers so have told myself I MUST STOP!

My biggest addiction is occasion type dresses which is hilarious given I don’t even have the social life to wear them.

I am presuming (hoping) that eventually I will get used to the new me and the constant need to try things on will decrease.

I was like this when I first lost 7 stone and I went a bit mad. I’ve calmed down now. But good for you, enjoy it.

@ChiaraMontague But just got to vent : my pet peeve on Vinted is people selling clothes that they’ve clearly shrunk in the wash!

In general I only buy BNWT or W/OT because I don't trust people's idea of "very good"

The ONE time I didn't was because I wanted a cheap pair of inbetween (size 16) jeans as I headed downwards. I'd bought a brand new pair of M&S Sienna straights ahead, in size 14, but I wasn't there yet and all my wardrobe-shopped 18s were finally too big.

So I found an apparently bargain pair of Siennas in 16 listed as Very Good. Yeah. Right. The moment I tried them on I could tell they'd been tumble dried. I laid them out on the bed next to the brand new 14s and they were shorter in length and almost the same size. 🙄😠

I’m the same. The sheer joy of buying lovely clothes you like, rather than ones that you hope will flatter, is wonderful. I wasn’t expecting it. I’ve always liked clothes but hadn’t realised how miserable and difficult I found clothes shopping when I was bigger.

I think that’s it, you can dress how you chose. In the style you wish.

most of us did this for health, I certainly did. My bmi was 32 and as I’ve a long very narrow frame, my body just couldn’t deal with it, and I developed lots of health issues, sleep apnea, high blood pressure etc. so I had to get the weight off.

but there is no lying about the fact the improvement in my appearance, what I look like at a bmi 20 v 32 is a huge huge improvement, and I can now wear anything I wish to wear.

and that’s lovely. To no longer be constrained or feel uncomfortable. To feel good in your clothes, to like your appearance, the confidence that comes with it.

i said it before on another thread, most women dress for themselves, not the male gaze, and for other women, to impress, compete or fit in. And one of the nicest things about this is the amount of young women who have complimented me.

I’m in my 50s, and I mean women on their mid 20s to mid 30s. Just random young women, could be a waitress or someone at a bar. Things like I love your dress, or you look great, and admiring looks, from small groups of them, looking over nodding, smiling. Always takes me by surprise and means so much more than anything any man could say. Makes me feel like I might be getting it right, and dare I say age appropriate.

I suspect it helps I’m very toned as I work out a lot. So clothes hang right. And I wear higher end clothes, all current but not high fashion, all carefully cared for.

but yeah, that’s one of the pleasant surprises for me, younger women giving me their seal of approval.

Not sure where you’re buying from, but try Vinted. You can get new with tags at half the price. May save you a bit of money, but you can’t return anything though!

NeedSleepNowPls · 04/04/2026 20:20

That's an incredible loss, well done!! Enjoy the clothes, you deserve to feel and look good!

SmeII · 04/04/2026 20:39

I hear ya, OP.

I really need to stop buying clothes. I’ve lost 10.5st and used to have to buy whatever I could find that fit, whereas now I have so much choice.

It’s really becoming a problem 😬
It’s just the amount of choice I now have. Before, if I wanted, say, a red cardigan, it’d take me month to find one that fitted. Now I have six red cardigans because I’ll see one with a lace cuff so will get it, and the next shop will have one with lovely buttons so that comes home too.

Well done on your amazing weight loss! I’ve lost 7 stone and become addicted to Vinted too. I’ve still got loads more weight to lose so don’t want to be buying too much new.

Doggymummar · 04/04/2026 20:55

Losing ten stone got me a whole new lifestyle. I started off selling my own clothes as I went from 24 down through the sizes to an XS or eight. I'm still not a healthy BMI according to the charts but I don't think I will get smaller as such, internal fat will just move. Now I have an eBay shop selling new and preloved fashion with close to 1000 items on it, having sold about 1200 last year. I never have nothing to wear and I love fashion and style now. Early to bed to get up for the bootsales tomorrow

ChiaraMontague · 17/04/2026 08:46

I’ve had to stop taking a punt on Vinted now because my brain is lagging behind my body!

I thought I got a great bargain on a Reiss blazer for £15 but when I tried it on I found that it was hanging off me. I probably need a size 10 in that particular style 😱 - this time last year I would have laughed at the idea that I would even be able to shop at Reiss again, let alone find any of their clothes too small!

dishwashing · 17/04/2026 09:32

For me it’s shoes! My feet have shrunk and I’m able to tie laces now. I love to wear colour and match my footwear to my outfit. The vast majority of the time it’s a pair of trainer of some sort but I have so many shoes now!

ProfessorMacandCheese · 17/04/2026 12:10

I'm exactly the same. Went totally nuts on Vinted, and have replaced my whole wardrobe. As others have said, you definitely seem to go down the sizes the smaller you are, so I have ended up buying a lot of stuff that has then become too big before I've even had a chance to wear it.

I've definitely calmed down now, although am still looking on Vinted every day!
