Is there anything you recommend getting ahead of time to be prepared for ahead of starting the jab? I'm taking the person I care for to B&M/Home Bargains tomorrow, and I realised it might be an opportunity to get anything that might be handy for starting just after Easter? (aiming to start Easter Monday when there's not a 4-day bank holiday weekend starting the day or so after I receive the jab, providing they get okayed this coming week)

I'm assuming decent freezer/fridge-proof pots, measuring spoons, and decent food scales are a given, but is there anything else you suggest? Thank you! :)

Happy tummy tea bags from Asda I find helps with all thinks iffy gastro

Good luck! I’ve not needed anything really except decent scales which you now have.

If you’re going to be calorie counting (which I do recommend especially at the beginning) get some decent food scales.

Can someone possibly recommend a set of good food scales please? TIA

Collegen! My hair fell out like crazy for the first year I was on it. It’s taken nearly a year for my hair to regrow back in. Collagen powder has helped massively with this!

Kwells travel sickness tablets. I had awful nausea and vomiting at first and the kwells work very quickly and melt on your tongue--useful if you can't keep fluids down until the nausea settles.

Not many people have such severe side effects, but having the kwells on hand felt like a life saver to me at the time!

Not from Band M but I have paid for Nutracheck for the past 12 months and just renewed my subscription. I've found it an absolute doddle to use for calorie counting, tracking weight and easy to update targets. It's a British app so have never not found a food on there, also has a bar code scanner and an area for your own meals to work out your calories. I also track my protein and couldn't recommend enough. I think it's £27 for the year but well worth it.

I also use and love Nutracheck! Well worth the money, I track my calories, protein and fibre as well as my weight.

Big water bottle! Although I sometimes find trying to get 3L of tap water down can make my nausea worse, especially on the first two days after I jab, so I usually drink flavoured sparkling water on those days.

Protein shakes for the days when the mere mention of breakfast makes you want to cry at the thought of eating anything!

Try to go for a walk after eating, I find it helps with the nausea/sulphur burps a little.

A soft tape measure for body measurements is one I'd add to the list.

Ruthietuthie · 29/03/2026 22:49

I didn't buy anything. I already had bathroom scales. And that was it.

Oh this is a good shout! I wish I’d taken measurements at the start.

I too use the Nutracheck app, which is constantly pointing out I need more protein. Having read various people's advice, I now take a protein drink at lunch time as it's the only way I can get enough; I don't have the appetite to eat umpteen boiled eggs, or whatever. I get protein powder online (from Myprotein ) and I use the whey isolate as it's low in lactose, and most of the vegan powders have a gritty texture. I also try to take one electrolyte a day ( usually mid afternoon when I run out of energy).
I tend to feel very dizzy sometimes if I leap up too quickly, which is apparently 'a thing' on WLIs, so be careful.
I would imagine, if you are a full time carer, you probably won't be needing much in the way of weight lifting!
