Contacting Dr about WLI

ritala · 27/03/2026 15:01

I am taking the leap with WLI and opting for MedExpress so I’m not in a Contract with Voy. I’ve heard they contact your dr. Is that true? I’ve not been weighed for years by the dr but last time I was, I was at a healthy BMI. Is there anything the Dr might do based on the letter? Maybe invite me in for a weigh in? Happy to do that. I am just over healthy BMI but still qualify for off label WLI.

It should be clearly explained in the MedExpress terms and conditions as to what they will do wrt to contacting your GP. I haven’t used MedExpress, but most places simply notify your GP practice with a standard letter to inform them of the prescription. GP practices may then upload the letter to your HS records and add the medication to your current prescriptions list albeit one that isn’t managed by the NHS. Some pharmacies may ask permission to check your NHS summary care record. If they discover that you have a contraindicated condition or existing prescription that you didn’t disclose then they may query that with you. Your GP may also review and want to discuss if they think there’s an issue with prescribing this to you.

SilenceInside · 27/03/2026 15:37

*NHS records not “HS records”….

Wibbs · 27/03/2026 15:51

I ordered from Med Express about a month ago. From the letter they sent to my GP they require all patients to give access to their summary care record to check for contraindications. They verify your weight iirc via a live video taken from their website or possibly app. The letter included the weight and height I had given them and the surgery have added them to my record.

madcatters · 27/03/2026 15:53

They are not asking your GP if they can prescribe to you, they are notifying them that they have.

Ineedanewsofa · 27/03/2026 15:55

My GP has done nothing off the back of me getting my prescription from MedExpress, it’s only come up when discussing other prescriptions to check for contraindications but they don’t really know with most medications so it’s a take it and see!

ritala · 27/03/2026 16:58

Thank you. I think my surgery will be in for a shock when they see my weight as I’ve not been weighed by the for years. I could really do without going down there if they want to see me.

I am looking forward to starting. Quite nervous though. If I get through the phone screening then I’ll be on the lowest dose of Wegovy. I’m just booking my phone call with the provider now.

Your GP is likely to do nothing at all. And I doubt they’d be shocked by someone who is just over the healthy BMI range, that’s exceedingly typical and not any kind of medical concern if you have no weight related health conditions.

IsItSnowing · 27/03/2026 17:13

My GP justs adds the letters to their system. When they got the first one they messaged me to ask me for my weight which I replied and told them - they then added this. They messaged me again 6 months later and asked for a weight update. Not been asked for another and that was more than 6 months ago.
At my asthma review they have always been positive about the weight loss and mj although they always just take my word for it. I've not seen them in person since I started.

They will not be shocked at all. They will file the letter against your record and that will be it.

VioletandMauve · 27/03/2026 17:45

Yes I’ve ordered monthly off MedExpress for the past 5 months, each time they send a letter to my GP who just files it off somewhere and it shows up on my records. GP has so far not contacted me about being on it.

Thelondonone · 27/03/2026 17:48

I found wegovy useless. No suppression at all-save your money for mounjato.

ritala · 27/03/2026 17:55

Thanks all. I’ll see what happens. I guess they are too busy to bother cross referencing everyone.

@Thelondonone- I think everyone has different experiences. This is my first dip into WLI and I wanted to try the cheaper one. I also read Wegovy is good for anti-inflammatory diseases and as I have an auto immune disease (not one that came up on the MedExpress questionnaire), I thought it would help.

There are many pharmacies, it’s not just med express or voy.

this website has a list of them, monj.co.uk

MedExpress are notoriously difficult.

SilenceInside · 29/03/2026 09:59

@Notsosweetcarolinethe OP has limited choices because she is not obese or significantly overweight, so is looking to be prescribed WLI off licence. There are only a couple of online pharmacies who do this at the moment, for people with a BMI of 25 or over. Voy and MedExpress are the two that I know of.

Ah ok, thanks, I did find it a bit odd. Thay explains it.

Woo383040 · 29/03/2026 12:12

I do wonder if the GPs keep any stats on the number of patients on WLI. I think unless there is some massive red flag to contraindicate you taking WLI your GP won’t do anything.

They are supposed to record it on your nhs notes. So yes they should know. They are not supposed to do anything other than review to ensure no reason the person shouldn’t be taking them, past that they should not be involved, unless it impacts other care. So for example my gp monitored me as my blood pressure obvs reduced with the weight loss, so my bp meds had to also reduce, until I came off, and the prescriber also wrote to me to ensure I was getting it checked.

Senmum2026 · 01/04/2026 18:01

My GP contacted me when new guidance came out about WLI and HRT so they could review my HRT.

chrisrobin · 01/04/2026 18:12

I've been with Medexpress since I started last July, they send a letter to my GP each time I order, it has my current weight, height and BMI on it. My GP scans it into my file (I am able to see the letters in the NHS app) but they haven't contacted me about it.

Something to note- Medexpress will price match up to £40 if you find it cheaper elsewhere within 7 days (unless you used a referral code)

I really don’t think your surgery will give your weight a second thought op!

TootieFrooties · 01/04/2026 18:23

I opted in to my surgery being informed but when I went to my well woman’s check where I was weighed the nurse didn’t mention it or anything.

@Senmum2026 what were the new guidelines about HRT? Im thinking of starting WLI and currently take HRT

Any oral medication you take on WLI may potentially not be absorbed as well or more importantly at a consistent time - this is why the contraceptive pill isn’t effective on WLI. I was advised to swap oral progestron for a progestron coil.

I'm doing well on ozempic but mounjaro was useless for me. Data points which are meaningless.
