Reached target weight with Mounjaro and stopped, but already putting weight back on after 2 weeks

I was on Mounjaro between July 2025 and March this year. I lost a total of 40 pounds, which took me from being on the edge of obese to having a BMI of 23.8. I reached my target weight a few weeks ago. I thought I would be able to keep the weight off without Mounjaro, but unfortunately this has proven to be impossible for me. I had my final jab on the 4th of March. The effects last for about a week. Since the 11th of March, I've already put on 5 pounds in the space of 2 weeks. Yesterday I ate a big fry-up in the morning and a curry in the evening, with a few snacks in between. Right now, I feel ravenous. I feel like I could eat for England. I feel helpless without the suppression you get from the jab.

Is this the case for most people? Has anyone been able to keep their weight off after stopping the jab? I was hoping I wouldn't need to remain on the jabs for life, especially with how expensive they are. It looks like I'll have to though, or I'll just pile all the weight straight back on.

To be fair this thread has only recently been moved to the WLI board, presumably at the request of the op, because a pp suggested it would be a good idea. It started off in the more generic Weight Loss one.

Ok... that explains it

She did make some good suggestions though

Tammy214 · 26/03/2026 10:18

Question, what was the highest dose you were on and what dose did you finish on?

She did. Stop policing the board. If people have good advice it applies to us all trying to lose weight or maintain whatever the method. Some of us want to hear good tips

Is asking a question policing the board?
I never said she couldn't be here.

Unlike you...!

Don't tell me what I can do or not do!

I did 6 weeks on mounjaro and then stopped as I didn’t care for feeling like I had morning sickness 4 days a week and indegestion- I did however take on board all the advice and continued to follow same kind of habits- far less carb, far more protein, a lot more water/herbal tea , no snacks and much smaller portions - I calorie count and yes I have still lost weight at the same rate, slow but steady and feel better - it does take very good will power though and being consistent with it week in week out ( apart from holidays) I make sure I have nothing that’s instantly grabbabke in the house like cakes/biscuits /crisps etc - I also slightly upped excercise - I think in the past I underestimated calories because I was actually eating well - and overestimated how much I could eat - I was working on the basis of 2k cals a day, it’s become very clear to me that I need to be closer to 1200 to 1400 to lose and consistent with it and 1400 to 1600 to maintain - over that - I gain - that’s at 64 and relatively active 8-12k steps a day every day plus 2 excercise classes a week. I would also like to mention wine!! Now I love my wine at weekends, but honestly if I drink even half a bottle on both a Friday and Saturday night I will then never lose, regardless of if I only have 800 cals of food - I think many ( not all) women underestimate how much booze is contributing to not losing and even gaining

I had to come off it abruptly in January after a year on it and an 8st loss, as I developed pancreatitis due to a stuck gallstone, and have put a few lbs on and I’m just starving all the bloody time. It’s really disheartening as I felt so brilliant on MJ (apart from the pancreatitis of course!) and still have some weight to lose, which I feel will be impossible now.

So sorry to hear hear this. I'm in a similar position. Lost just over 8st and was planning on titrating down and then continuing a maintenance dose for a couple of years. But I'm having my gallbladder removed at the end of April and have to just stop. Terrified of what will happen. Had my last jab on Sunday

Yes... exactly...!

Which is why you telling me to stop 'policing' the board is hypocritical...!

Because I didn't tell anyone to stop anything... I asked why - which isn't the same thing

Hopefully you’ve learnt a lesson to not ask why someone is posting. 👋🏼

Learnt...? 😂😂😂😂 LOL...!

There was nothing to learn, because there is nothing wrong with me asking a question.

The person can choose to answer or not.

I will always speak my mind... you or anyone else will never stop me from doing that.

Wickedlittledancer · 26/03/2026 17:39

How long were you on the drugs and did you taper down. You need about two years for your body and mind to get used to your new regime of eating, hitting goal and going cold turkey will always be hard.

youve not felt hunger for ages so will be unused to it and it will feel strong. Plus your blood sugar is no longer controlled so will have cravings again.

ideally you stay on, tapering down whilst reverse dieting, the increase in cals slowly offsets the slow reduction in meds, then maintain on a low dose for dose for two years then come off.

Hello everyone. I was on 7.5mg when I stopped. My highest dose was 10mg but I went back to 7.5mg as nausea was too much for me on 10mg.

Anyway, I've unfortunately put on even more weight since I posted. I've had to order another Mounjaro pen. I stopped as I thought I'd be able to maintain after going cold turkey - that was a huge miscalculation on my behalf. I was ok for about a week after my last jab wore off, then my appetite returned with a vengeance. Others have mentioned that stopping WLI cold turkey is like trying to give up smoking tobacco cold turkey as a long-time heavy smoker - I've never smoked but I'm willing to believe that's true.

Giving up tobacco cold turkey was easy, giving up GLP1 is orders of magnitude more difficult!

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 30/03/2026 09:42

Thanks for updating, OP. You need to titrate down, much more slowly. You wouldn’t have jumped straight to 7.5mg when you first started, and the same principles apply in reverse. Work your way down through the doses and experiment with extending the period between jabs, too. I got to the point where I was microdosing 1.25mg every fourteen days before I stopped completely.

I think need to plan to titrate very gradually over a year. You can stretch pens if you are comfortable with that but I’m working down from 2.5mg - now on 2mg. Next pen will be 1.75mg then pen after will be 1.5mg etc.

I spotted something on a Facebook group that might help. I previously found a really helpful ebook and I think this is the same one. It was called 'Life After Ozempic' on Amazon, and had a red cover with a weird fork and syringe on the front. I think the post said it was going to be free for the next day or two, worth checking if you are interested.

Thank you for highlighting this. I've just downloaded the book.

Hi,
I lost 30kg in 6 months and tapered it off properly.
Came off the jab completely in August and over 6 months I put back on 7 kg until April. I don't eat 'crap' (crisps, biscuits, takeaways, ready meals), I cook my food from scratch. Still went back up. So, decided to just start back on the 2.5 for maintenance that I don't feel the urge for carbs.
I also am reading a book by Dr Gundry 'Plant Paradox'
This made me realise what happens and why we all put weight on in the first place. I would recommend the book.
Funnily enough, whilst I'm on the jabs it's the foods on his 'no list' that I don't want.
I am happy with my desicion, just need to see whether I'm going to do 2.5 every two weeks or play with the clicks and do 1.75 every week

This. Absolutely obvious to anyone.

I’ve been on a diet since the end of March, what I wouldn’t give for a proper greasy spoon fry up - it’s just a very obvious no.

Very obvious.

Bloozie · 21/04/2026 13:56

The folk who are bouncing back up in weight no matter how slowly you titrated off mounjaro - have you ever successfully maintained a healthy weight?

I ask because, while there have been times of my life when I have been VERY overweight, there have also been long stretches where I haven't really had to think about my weight. Normally linked to how active I am, and how happy I am. I've been hoping that this will be a default I can maintain the other side of MJ - but now y'all are making me worried. I'm in my titrating period now.

Snowie99 · 21/04/2026 14:28

@Fishingboatbobbingnight well done on the weight loss. If you are now down to a size 8, how do you manage to get further medication? Will they continue to supply a maintenance dose?

You can go down to bmi 19/20 with most pharmacies and stay on a maintenance dose, that dose is of your choosing, be it 5mg or 15mg as long as you don’t lose more, its just the same as buying a non maintenance dose, the only difference is they monitor to check you don’t lose more.

the drug is to get you to, snd if required keep you at a healthy weight, that healthy weight is your choice, as long as its a healthy bmi.

im bmi 2o, dress size 8, have been for about 14/15 months, on a 5mg dose monthly, weight very stable,

whatifs1 · 21/04/2026 14:59

The WHO recommends GLP1 use long term. Obesity is a chronic issue. Some people will keep the weight off, lots won’t. Hopefully this means maintenance dose is also ongoing/long term rather than time limited. ☺️
