Wegovy vs mountjaro

I am at the end of my tether with my weight. I amgoing to start weightless injections to give my weight loss a real kick start. I am reading a lot but cannot decide between wegovy and mountjaro. I am just wondering what were the deciding factors for others?

I’ve not used MJ as it wasn’t out when I first started. I’m back on Wegovy now but as I have less to lose this time, I’m not going to pay for MJ as it’s too expensive and I’m not sure it’s a good investment, however if I was back at my square 1 days I would try MJ as seems to have better weight loss outcomes.

I can’t compare the side effects, I respond really fast to low dose wegovy therefore I feel disgusting from day 1 and struggle with my stomach all the time and lose weight through feeling grim

You can find lots of decent summaries online from the various pharmacies that prescribe both eg https://onlinedoctor.asda.com/uk/wegovy-vs-mounjaro-vs-ozempic.html

In a nutshell, both are GLP1 agonists, that means they mimic the natural hormone GLP1, which affects how full you feel and how hungry you feel between meals. Mounjaro has another action, where Wegovy doesn't, in that it also mimics a hormone called GIP. GIP affects your blood sugar levels and how your body stores and uses fat. Mounjaro is therefore more effective at producing weight loss than Wegovy, although both produce significant weight loss (16% of starting weight on average for Wegovy, compared to 22% of starting weight on average for Mounjaro).

Mounjaro is more expensive than Wegovy. It also has fewer side effects reported, on average, and they tend to be lesser in severity.

When I started, Mounjaro was cheaper, so it was an easy decision to make. I also had a lot of weight to lose, so wanted the higher rate of weight loss. If I were starting now, I probably would still choose Mounjaro, but that's because I am very fortunate not to have an issue with the cost, even though it's much more expensive than when I started. If I was more concerned about cost, I would give Wegovy a try and see how I got on with it.

I was on mounjaro and lost 6 stone. On wegovy now. My opinion is that mj is best but side effects are worse and it’s too expensive.

TheSlimmingPumpkin · 19/03/2026 18:22

Depends upon your budget, how much you are aiming to lose and how long you anticipate being on jabs. Given that the extra dose is being removed from Mounjaro pens they are not quite as cost effective as they used to be.

Even though I have lost six stone in 15/16 months the likelihood is that I will probably need a maintenance dose for years.

I want to lose 30kg. I do not have a lot of money, but can manage mj if I really tighten other spending. I am hoping to save money on food and wine! Wegovy is a lot more manageable moneywise though!

You’d be likely to take somewhere between 33 to 66 weeks to lose 30kg/66lbs assuming you lose at an average rate of 1 to 2lbs a week. Then you’d need to plan for how long you might want to stay on the medication whilst you work out how to maintain your weight. Some people might choose to stay on it indefinitely.

As the costs are tight, it might be worth giving Wegovy a go and seeing how you get on. Changing pharmacies for each order will keep costs down as you can use new customer discounts each time.

I’m on wegovy and have lost 4 stone (25kg) in 23 weeks. Side effects have been mostly minimal.

I change supplier each month to get the cheapest deal, and I’m happy with my loss/what I’ve paid for it.

I would be delighted with that!

Happy to share my start weight as I know this can have a huge impact on rate of loss etc - started at 15 stone 10lbs back in October, and am currently 11 stone 9lbs.

Dosage wise I’ve done a month on 0.25mg, 0.5mg, 1mg then did 2 months on 1.7mg and have just moved up to 2.4mg.

1mg threw me the most - more side effects and less average loss.

Hoping to lose another stone/1.5 stone, I imagine this is going to take around 6-8 weeks as loss has slowed.

Mysticmaiden · 19/03/2026 20:24

Give wegovy a go as if it doesn't work for you, you can always move over to mj but at least you've started on one that is better financially.

I am 16 stone 5 pounds and my bmi is 32. I was worrying that I might have too much to lose for Wegovy

It's not really about the starting weight but those who have insulin resistance may do better on mounjaro due to the extra GIP. But starting off from scratch wegovg might work really well for you. I found it didn't control my blood sugars and inflammation like mj did so I switched back but new starters would do better on wegovy

No I lost weight on wegovy at a similar size. I think the difference is that MJ can be faster? But it is more expensive

If it is faster it might work out at similar price though, overall.

I think what weight you lose and how fast depends on how you personally react to whichever medication that you choose. Not really possible to predict, unfortunately.

On most diets weight loss can be fast initially and then inevitably slows down as you get closer to your target.

Stickytoffeetartt · 19/03/2026 22:51

I started Wegovy yesterday and I feel so unwell. I have vomited twice in the last hour. I've signed up to a 6 month plan and it doesn't look like I can cancel it. I'm really disappointed so far. I don't think it's going to agree with me so I might be paying for something that im not using. Just make sure that you choose carefully!

Snugglemonkey · 19/03/2026 23:52

Thanks @Stickytoffeetartt. I am planning on going month by month to try and get the best deals.

I really hope you are feeling better soon! It would be rubbish to be paying and not even able to take it.

Edited because I accidentally hit send before finishing.

My pharmacist tells me that Mounjaro is the superior drug.
