Side effects are too miserable to continue

Nausea, ok, not nice.Copious farting, I don't mind the smell of my own gas. However the constant onslaught of diarrhea from only my second day on Mounjaro as a new starter is making me think I have to call it a day already!
I'm berating myself for not being able to see past this and for wasting a lot of money, in equal measure.
I've already lost two days work as my job isn't toilet friendly, I'm on the move, in more ways than one.
Out of curiosity, has anyone had early side effects that subsided,or are they renewed after each new dose, until the body decides to ease into it?
I feel such a failure but I just want to feel relatively normal,health-wise.

It will pass. Just use the wellbeing pack they usually provide to deal with these types of side effects. Think of the amount of people using these drugs; if these things persisted, people wouldn’t tolerate them. It’s short term annoyance for long term benefit. Good luck 🤞

SilenceInside · 20/02/2026 10:33

I didn't get side effects like that until I was on 5mg, but they calmed down and stopped for the other 5mg injections. I then went up to 7.5mg in partial increases by counting clicks rather than jumping straight up, which helped.

You could try doing a partial dose eg 1.25mg rather than 2.5mg, and leaving your next dose until you are definitely past the diarrhea. The medication is peaking in your system on the second to third day, and then the levels drop, so you should find that side effects ease off as well.

Are OTC treatments helping with the diarrhea?

I've waited until day three to see if the symptoms subside naturally. No chance of that so I'll trot off to the chemist for some Diacalm.
Some good points on these threads to consider, thanks. I'm on the fence as to whether to wave the white flag and surrender; I hate feeling unwell.

could it be dietary charges too? not sure about these drugs but nobody has asked so im asking!

everyone says eat less carbs and more veg snd lean meat but if i did that i’d shit myself thin. could you have improved your diet at the same time?

or are you still eating a lot of fatty food so it’s like Ali and the body just dumps it?

what dose are you on? can you reduce the dose so it’s less of a problem and persevere for a while?

FirstdatesFred · 20/02/2026 11:23

Side effects for me come and go but definitely eased after the first few weeks. Some people are more sensitive. I find that what I’ve eaten on the day before injection day/on the day/day after makes a difference.

I think if I were you I’d do a half dose next week to let your body adjust. You can do that by counting the clicks when you turn the pen. It’s 60 clicks to the 1, so you could do 30 clicks. Then if you tolerate that, try 45 the next week.

(nb - obviously not a pharmacist, but my opinion has always been that surely it can’t be harmful to have less of a drug)

SilenceInside · 20/02/2026 11:24

@TalulahJP Mounjaro is nothing like Alli/Orlistat, it is not a mechanical fat binder so your body will not "dump" fat in the way that you might get if taking those tablets. It does slow digestion, which can cause the kind of stomach upset the OP is describing. Eating a lot of fatty food and sugar can exacerbate that.

BerfyTigot · 20/02/2026 11:25

Sadly i was one of the few who couldn't tolerate the vomiting and diarrhoea. My side effects never settled down even when i microdosed. I persisted for several months, taking full amount of imodium and wearing adult nappies sometimes. I am now resigned to being overweight.

But threads on here show that for the majority of people the side effects do settle and they go on to be successful. So maybe stay with it for a bit? Good luck, I do know how horrendous it can be.

Rosa1211 · 20/02/2026 11:41

I've been eating very bland food in general in the run up to starting at 2.5 mg, perhaps I'll drop down on the clicks, thanks for explaining how to do this. I'm very aware that while I feel like this I'm definitely not giving of my best either in work or to my family. Decisions to be made. Thanks everyone.

I had 2days of violent diarrhoea after every jab when on Mounjaro . I had to stop taking it before surgery anyway but decided not to continue afterwards as the side effects were just not worth it. I had the diarrhoea while on 2.5 mg and 5 mg. Everyone told me that my body would get used to it but I’d had enough. I are very healthily, no junk food, no alcohol, mainly salads with protein and a jacket potato or homemade bread.

PearlsTeapot · 20/02/2026 11:47

I started at 1.25 for 6 weeks I think by counting 30 clicks to avoid the side effects. I still lost weight.

Brightlittlecanary · 20/02/2026 13:20

I’ve never had any side effects in nearly two years other than mild nausea when I went up to 5mg. My diet is low fat, low sugar, low carb, with about 3 litres of water a day, so lots of protein, eggs, meat, fish, salads, veg, kvarg, Greek yoghurt, and a lot of fruit, mango, pineapple, grapes etc.

TheChosenTwo · 20/02/2026 13:31

I’ve not really had any side effects beyond some hair loss - not sure how common the severe diarrhoea is but certainly some do suffer.
I have eaten far less on MJ than before but my overall diet is quite similar. I still eat fat and sugar albeit it in way less quantity.
I suppose it’s worth trying half a dose if you do want to continue, just to see if the side effects lessen?

Zempy · 20/02/2026 13:35

I had diarrhoea once in over a year of taking MJ.

I took immodium and that sorted it out. Have you not taken anything?

I would recommend persevering but your decision. 💐

BG2015 · 20/02/2026 15:50

Could you switch to Wegovy? Side effects appear less than MJ.

However I'm on WG, started on 0.25 all good, steady weight loss and miminal side effects, went up to 0.5 and I've felt dreadful. I've lost 1stone in 7 weeks so that's good but I've truly felt like a zombie for the past 4 weeks.

Going back to 0.25.

The gift that keeps on giving: I am now the proud owner of a bunch of painful heammaroids.
