Mounjaro 'buffer' weight?

Wondering if people have given themselves a 'buffer' when they use mounjaro - i.e, deliberately losing more weight than their goal weight, in case they gain back some pounds when they come off the jabs...? I'm 5 foot, and 10.7 stone currently. I would be happy to end up at 9-9.5 stone, but thinking of trying to get down to 8.5 stone initially... then if I do put (up to) a stone back on, I won't feel too terrible about it 😅. Anyone else done this?

@Pegs11 I’m sorry, that all sounds really challenging. I’ve been taking mj for 18 months and have no plans to stop, though I am tapering. I struggle a lot with health conditions but I know I need to do some exercise or it all just gets worse. I just did five minutes with my bits and pieces and will do that twice more today. It’s not enough, but it’s a start!

Be realistic as to what is achievable right now, you can take your time hopefully and change one thing at a time to new things that feels sustained.

Hi there @Pegs11

I'm also neurodiverse and I struggle massively with emotional dysregulation.
I truly sympathise with you.

I've gone through some extreme challenges recently (husband walking out, DS2 becoming very ill) and I know exactly how you're feeling.

I've been on MJ for 25 months now and I've gone down from over 20st to 10st 9lb.

I actually doubt now if I'll be able to come off the stuff. However, once I get down to 10st 2lb I'm going to titrate down and see how it goes.

It's possible that there will soon be MJ in tablet form, which GP surgeries will prescribe. If that doesn't happen, I'm going to do my best financially, and stay on it anyway.

The price of MJ versus the price of piles of unnecessary food are roughly the same.

Here are my before and after pictures to inspire you. In the first one, I hadn't even reached my heighest weight. I put on another 2st after the picture was taken.

Oh and @Pegs11

In my second picture, I was still "overweight" according to the BMI scale. I have a BMI of 27 in that picture!

Crunchymum · 08/02/2026 16:35

I didn't realise this was a thing but i've adjusted my goal weight as I've got closer. I've now hit my initial goal.

I want to lose an additional 7lbs to sit more in the middle of a healthy BMI (although I'm going for 9lbs and that will take my total weight loss to 5st exactly!)

Then I'm going to titate down to a maintenance dose.

@FurForksSake thank you xx and I'm sorry you've also had health issues. I am starting slowly with the exercise and hoping to find a form that I enjoy and can stick at. I've never been a gym person, but at the moment I'm getting a good steep hill walk in, almost every day, and am finding it rewarding. Next step will be to build in some pilates.

My original goal was 10 stone (I’m 5ft 4). I’m now thinking of 91/2 stone so I have a half stone buffer.

Pegs11 · 08/02/2026 19:37

@TheBroonOneAndTheWhiteOne it sounds like you've had a really rough ride, I hope things are improving for you.

I think I've read about the pill format that's currently being tested. It's daily I think, instead of weekly?

Your weight loss is fantastic, well done and thank you for sharing the pics 😊

I must say, so far mounjaro feels almost too easy 😅 I can't believe the impact it's had on my cravings, and I've had to do nothing except inject myself once a week. This is after years and years of not finding a solution to the food noise. I know mounjaro isn't the "ultimate" solution but not having these cravings is making such a difference to how I feel - physically, because all that sugar and lack of proper nutrition was just adding to my health issues - and mentally, as I don't have the guilt and the out-of-control/helpless feelings that go hand-in-hand with the comfort eating...

I'm 5'1" and started my mounjaro journey at 11 stone. My goal weight is 9 stone, but I think I will go to 8.5 stone to give myself the buffer.

I'm already down to 10.5 stone and not even a month in. I'm expecting the weight loss to slow down a bit, but that's probably not a bad thing as I understand losing weight too quickly isn't good for the body.

I did this. My initial goal weight was 10 stone. Then I dropped to 9.5 to give me that buffer. Then 9. Then 8.5 which was where I was maintaining until Christmas. I then put half a stone on so I’m glad I had the buffer as realised that 9 stone is my sweet spot in that I am happiest with how I look and feel.

Currently working on getting back to 8.5 (without the help of MJ which is proving hard going) so I get my buffer back to allow for holidays etc this year.

Losing weight is strangely addictive. This last stone was so easy while on MJ, it is a million times harder without but I’m enjoying the challenge.

Pegs11 · 09/02/2026 10:57

@EdinaTheConfessor yeah, 9 stone is my sweet spot. I haven't been there since 2010... But I would be ok with being 9.5 and will definitely be celebrating when I reach that milestone! But yes, I think 8.5 to start with is a good idea and then I've got 0.5 to 1 stone as a buffer.

When I come off MJ, I think I'll be fine at controlling portion size, that's the easiest bit for me. I just have to find a way to tackle the sugar binges. As someone said above, with MJ taking the edge off things while I'm on it, perhaps my brain will learn to not reach for sugar as the first port of call when I'm stressed.
