Pen packaging

My supplier is Pharmulous and they send the pen wrapped in a plastic-coated woollen layer, with an ice pack inside. Probably standard for most suppliers I would imagine.

I have kept a few of the ice packs for our cool box and my daughter's cool box, but I still have a pile of the woollen packages and I would love to know if there is anyway to reuse/repurpose them! Seems so wasteful just to throw them away (I am not sure if they can be put in the recycle bin, I need to have a read, but it still seems a shame to just chuck them out!). They look like they would be great for insulating things!!

Do you just throw all your packaging away or have you got some great idea of how to reuse it all?

You can also send back to puffin. I have a box of around 15 that is not quite full yet, but once it is I’ll be sending back. I’ll keep a couple along with a couple of ice packs in case fridge goes on the blink.

i use my wool to protect bulbs /tubers from frost, as a lining material in pots and as compost material

Crafty people will take them. Post on your local FB page.

I use them to line hanging baskets and window boxes. I also plan to use them to stuff into some draught excluders that I haven’t made yet.

Most medication-suitable wool packaging can be put out for birds/small animals to use for nests - you just have to rip it up enough for them to use then put in a wire feeder/box. Just check if yours has been treated as if so it shouldnt be put out.

I’ve sent a set of them back to the manufacturer if they are WoolCool. If you have 5 or more then you can send them back - see the bottom of the page here: https://www.woolcool.com/woolcool-recycling-ideas/

Thanks for this link. Have been wondering what to do with them too but also like the idea of lining plant pots.

Lovesabadboy · 30/01/2026 00:07

Thanks so much everyone for your ideas!

I had no idea you could return them, so thank you for that link @SilenceInside, I will certainly have a look at that as I now have 5 of them.

So glad I didn't just bin them!

I decided to use mine use to make small ironing mats for patchwork sewing.

borisjohnsonsliedetector · 30/01/2026 22:31

I give mine to my cats to have a fiesta with shredding up. When theyre done I stick it out for the garden birds who seem to appreciate it.

Lovesabadboy · 30/01/2026 23:11

Love the idea of putting it out for the birds!
Especially as they will be making nests pretty soon.
Will definitely do that with some of them!
