Taken off mounjaro because of appendicitis

Had been on mounjaro for about 4 months, prescribed due to ridiculously high blood sugars. Traditional medications weren't working, and tbh was reluctant initially to start this medication.

I was massively surprised at just how good it was, weightloss very slow (fine about that) but was so pleased that for the first time in my life I wasn't constantly hungry (and I mean my whole life, born just over 4lbs and had a problem ever since)

My reason for post, at long last. Suffered appendicitis, rushed into A&E ... too unstable to operate for a few days. Eventually had a 'complicated' appendectomy, also suffered with peritonitis (crp level 440) so was very ill.

Was in hospital for a very long 10 days

Home now, and diabetic nurse has stopped my mounjaro ... it's not as if I will ever have appendicitis again.

Had my pancreas checked not too long ago, ct scan, and all perfect.

Has this happened to anyone else

Did she give a reason for stopping it?

WeAllHaveWings · 17/01/2026 11:55

Did they say if it was a temporary pause to allow your body to fully recover, and to reduce any risks during recovery, from a very stressful time or permanently. It sounds sensible to be off it temporarily, perhaps they will revisit when you are fully recovered?

Thank you for responding, and you make perfect sense. Communication with diabetic nurse is usually phone calls, but she says a hundred words instead of 10 so sometimes after I'm often confused. So it maybe temporary

She wants to investigate whether the Mounjaro caused the appendix to rupture. The slower movement of food through bowels was so welcomed as I'd felt undernourished, even though im overweight.

The lack of food noise, and loss of food fear was wonderful.

But as the other poster pointed out it may be temporary to let me heal. I will send an email Monday, in the hope that she responds with an email

Thank you formresponding

You can get appendicitis again. When I had mine removed the doctor said that the stump of appendix that has been sutured together can get inflamed.

Crwysmam · 17/01/2026 13:20

Could be due to healing. The muscles they cut through to access your appendix need to heal and Mounjaro does appear to cause muscle loss so during healing of essential muscle tissue ( you need your abdominal muscles to keep your insides on the inside) may be a good idea not to be taking a drug that will interfere with muscle regeneration.

Also they slow down gastric emptying and the movement of food through the small bowel. The appendix is at the end of the small bowel so inflammation post op may ultimately cause a blockage and potential for further complications if food is building up in the small bowel.

There is still a lot that they don’t know about Mounjaro, although similar to older GLP1 drugs it is not identical and since it’s only been licensed for a couple couple of years they may be just being cautious.

Once you’ve healed fully and your bowel has settled down it’s likely that you can continue. Your diabetic nurse is just doing due diligence to prevent further problems.

Not if you’ve had it removed!

I’m self funding - a copy of my private prescription is sent to my gp and added to my NHS health record (I can see it on my app).
If I was admitted to hospital for something it’s all there to see so I guess whoever checks out health records when in hospital is monitoring.
I haven’t had any health complications so far in 16 months but a friend has and was refused one of her orders until she got cleared.

Yes you can! Surgeon explained to me that where they cut rest off there is little bit appendix left, which can get inflamed.
