Which glp-1 to start? How does this all work?

So... I've just weighed myself. I weigh over 21st. I have thought about my weight all my life, and started diet after diet to no avail. I weighed this amount last year, and started WW, lost 2 stones slowly, then life got in the way and I stopped tracking, so... here I am again.
I can't continue like this, and for the first time, I'm considering injections, but I'm totally confused by the 2 different types, and the doses, not to mention how to buy it!
The cheaper one seems to not be as effective - is that the case? But the more expensive and 'punchy' one comes with more side effects? Is that true? How do I know where to start? Also, is, weight loss just going to happen, or will I still have to track my points/calories, etc? How does it feel when you're on the injections?
Do I need to speak to my GP first? I have ME/CFS/long covid, which affects how much I can do physically, but no other health issues.
Please, weigh in with any advice/recommendations for me. I'm looking to you experienced lot to set me on the right track! 😊

Also all the celebs in the US take the wegovy equivalent so why not me lol

The MJ one is much more expensive and the price is apparently going to keep increasing and it’s very possible that it’s going to be difficult to buy in the future.

At your weight you will be fine on the wegovy ones and you’ll likely need to be on them for a year or 2 and do financially it makes sense too.

The wegovy aren’t as strong and so aren’t as useful for those who have less to lose but they also cheaper and are easier to purchase.

As you lost weight and then put it back on you’re going to need something that you can use alongside lifestyle changes.
MJ has higher rates of people putting all (if not more) of the weight back on and so Wegovy will mean it might take a little longer to lose weight but you’ll be more likely to maintain it.

Some people find wegovy has more side effects (feeling nauseous) but this is individual.

You have to start on the lowest dose for either.

I think it depends on your financial situation.

I should add that I do intermittent fasting as it is very natural to me to not eat until 1 or 2pm. It's no effort for me. So doing just two meals a day and staying in a deficit is much easier on that.

The price is apparently going to keep increasing and it’s very possible that it’s going to be difficult to buy in the future. - I don't think this is accurate. The price of Mounjaro went up in Sept 2025 due to political shenanigans in the US, and the manufacturer being required to equalise prices across the globe. They chose to raise the UK price rather than lower the US one. There is no reason on the horizon for Mounjaro prices to rise.

MJ has higher rates of people putting all (if not more) of the weight back on and so Wegovy will mean it might take a little longer to lose weight but you’ll be more likely to maintain it. - I also don't think this is accurate either. I'd be interested to find out where this idea has come from @Eyeshadow ?

I think those of us with larger amounts to lose will be on these medications for years not months, and so you are almost inevitably going to be making long term changes whichever medication you choose. There is no way that after 1.5 to 2 years on WLI that I am going to allow myself to rebound and return to obesity.

I’d definitely start with your GP.

No point. They don’t prescribe it.

ThirdBanana · 07/01/2026 05:15

I have a couple of underlying conditions, so went to my GP first to ensure that I wasn’t adding to my risks by taking WLI. He assessed me, checked my BMI, and decided I did meet the criteria, I'm now on month three of Wegovy. And have lost about 2 stone. I am sticking to quite a low dose for now as I don't want to lose it too fast. I also don’t want to completely lose the sense of hunger, as I think that would make coming off them harder.

IsItSnowing · 07/01/2026 09:51

I also wouldn't bother with the GP. Mine have been supportive of me taking mounjaro when but aren't interested in it at all. They have a notice on their website saying they don't prescribe it and won't do work e.g. bloods related to it.

I'm on mounjaro but if I started now I'd probably give wegovy a try first. It's a lot cheaper now and is very effective in a lot of people. Wegovy actually has more side effects than mounjaro but the projected average weight loss is less. But for some people it works really well and at a much lower cost.

If Wegovy doesn't work well for you then you can always switch to mounjaro.
