Should I or shouldn’t I start Mounjaro?

I have struggled with my weight all my adult life and at times found it very easy to lose weight when I tried but then it would creep on again.

last year I tried hard to lose weight again. At first going to slimming world and followed their diet exactly as described. That worked for a week or so then slowed right down and I stayed the same for weeks or gained but didn’t lose. Then along with the sw diet, I calorie counted and dropped my calories to lose weight to under 1000 cal per day. It was the only way to see a loss but even then it was very little. I felt ill and lightheaded so gave up after a month.

I have a sedentary job and don’t exercise out of work as I look after a sick relative.

I've had bloods checked last year to see if there was something that was preventing weight loss. All fine.

in my circumstances would Mounjaro help?

Yes, why wouldn’t you? Apart from cost

dammit88 · 01/01/2026 13:30

No it wouldn’t. It works by helping be in a calorie deficit. If you didn’t lose weight on 1000 calories a day you need to see a doctor. Mounjaro only helps with the deficit.

If you’re big enough to need WLI then 1000 calories is probably not enough for you hence the dizziness. Why not limit to 1500/1200 and then slowly decrease?

As she is clearly eating way more than she thinks

Sounds like you’re not calorie counting properly. And if you were and not losing on 1000 calories, then you need to see a doctor.

BillyBites · 01/01/2026 14:34

It depends if you would qualify for a prescription on weight/BMI grounds. How much overweight are you and how much do you need to lose to get into a healthy range?

FurForksSake · 01/01/2026 14:36

If you qualify, then yes, go for it. It’s not without side effects and effort and you’ll need to try and exercise and learn new habits for the long term.

Tighteningmybelt · 01/01/2026 14:41

Yes

babyspicydorito · 01/01/2026 14:55

It still works on a calorie deficit ultimately. Are you very short? My calories to lose 1lb a week are under 1000 because I’m very short. Despite what people think some people do have to eat below a 1000 a day to lose. Or do more exercise. I personally put on weight at 1500 calories a day because my maintenance calorie level is low. The only way around it is when I’m doing a few hours exercise a day.

SilenceInside · 01/01/2026 14:58

Yes, Mounjaro should help, making it easier to stay in a calorie deficit and it also works on stabilising your blood sugar levels and how your body utilises stored fat.

It is certainly worth a try, presuming you meet the prescription criteria of course.

Not true. It does a lot more than suppress appetite. It regulates metabolism and insulin resistance for starters. Google is a great help for finding information.

I would, I did, four stone later… I’ve kept it off for 14 months even over two Christmas’s.

This is a myth. If you eat fewer calories than you expend you will lose weight unless there is a medical issue present. Always. Starvation mode is a myth spread about by people who misunderstood metabolic adaptation.

It's really difficult to accept when you post something that contradicts human biology. The simple fact is you eat more than you think . No human being ever has been proven to do what you 'r e.saying . It is always found they just eat more than they think

PearlTeapot · 02/01/2026 16:37

How much do you weigh, and do you know your TDEE? SW certainly doesn't work for everyone (I gained weight, unsupririsingly with the amount of pasta and potatoes I was eating) but calorie counting does- including eating too little!

For MJ to work you need to know your goal and stick to it. Mine is around 1200 now for consistent loses, it's got lower as I've lost weight.
