Buying clothes when hoping to decrease body size further.

Started MJ 13 months ago, I have titrated slowly and have only just started taking 5mg.
My clothes size at the biggest was size 24 - 26

I have lost 4 and half stone and I am comfortably wearing size 18. I look and feel physically and emotionally well. I am bizarrely content with where I am at the moment.

I would possibly like to lose a little bit more, realistically another stone would be amazing. I am in no rush to do so and have a stash of pens in the fridge.

Getting to the point re clothes……

When I was fat, morbidly obese, my choice in clothes was limited. I bought clothes that served a purpose, the items covered me and kept me warm in the winter and cool (if that was possible) in the summer. Very, very rarely, have I bought an item of clothing, because I like it.

But here I am, size 18 and have a very small selection of clothes that I actually like. I haven’t spent a fortune on them so if I do slim down further, won’t mind donating to charity shop.

My dilemma is…..
The SALES have started and I am seeing clothes that are lovely and I’ve never had lovely clothes before but I can’t afford waste and for them to only fit me for a short period of time.

Help me out folks, do I buy or not?

I’ve been where you are years ago and I used to scour charity shops and eBay for clothes on a budget, but it is nice to have some brand new clothes that fit you properly for once!

Perhaps buy a couple of items in the sales that you really love which will still look good if you drop a dress size, and that you will get lots of use out of, and think about if you are interested in re-selling on Vinted or eBay once the items are just too big.

Buy and sell on Vinted. This has worked well for me as I went from 26 to 16.
Better for the planet and your purse.
Totally know what you mean about clothes going from being purely functional (and a horror to try and find) to a pleasure.
I keep buying fitted dresses after decades in stretchy tops and jeggings and also lots of boots now that my calves fit standard width.

Just sell the unwanted clothes on Vinted

This never motivated me to lose weight, or I'd lose the weight but not like the style or the fit doesn't suit my shape afterall even with weightloss. So, I would not recommend it. Leave them for someone who can wear them now. There will always be more nice things. I would look for things that will last weight changes like bags, scarves, jewellery, make up, perfume..maybe shoes if your feet don't seem too affected by weight.

I've sewn a lot of my clothes in with a sewing machine if you have the skill or know someone who can do it, especially for the more pricey or nicer clothes that you want to keep, it's better than getting rid. I do buy/have bought some new clothes but only if I really want then and had to sew some of them in too and bought some in yesterday's sales.

If you buy things in the sales that you like and fit you now, then you could mitigate the cost a little by selling them on Vinted/ebay when they don’t fit you anymore. I did that last year, had a couple of dresses that were heavily discounted that I then sold for about half what I paid for them.

Go charity shop shopping. Lots of lovely stuff in them. Buy a few key pieces either in the sale or not. You could sell them on vinted after. Sell your old clothes to make a little bit of money.

Well done on your loss so far - it’s not bizarre that you feel happy with where you are now.

it’s nice to have a few outfits that actually fit the current size. I just don’t go mad.

PearlTeapot · 28/12/2025 20:05

Well done on your loss! Buy what you like NOW- this is your body and you're living in it, so why not enjoy it?

Stick it all on Vinted when you go down a size and do it again. Part of the fun, no?

ThirdStorm · 28/12/2025 20:14

Charity shops and Vinted saved me. Vinted especially for tracking down a favourite piece of clothing in a smaller size.

Firstly, well done OP and hope it continues!
I went from a size 22 to a 10/12 a few years ago - bought loads of charity shop clothes along the way. I did buy some full price stuff but it was often a waste of money as it'd be too big so quickly.
Those were the days, I don't have that problem now! - but still scour the charity shops and often get decent stuff - also returning stuff I don't wear/need but which only cost a few quid.
