Mounjaro and blood-sugar crashes - anyone else had this?

SecretNameforMN · 21/12/2025 06:18

I have a huge amount of weight to lose, and took my first 2.5 Mounjaro jab 9 days ago. (I am not diabetic and take no medication.) Two hours afterwards I was plunged into a massive "hypo" crash, followed by a fit of uncontrollable trembling, blurred vision, confusion, and most frightening of all, an overwhelming feeling of sheer panic, which, I was later told, was caused by my body releasing a massive amount of adrenaline in response to the rapid and massive drop in blood-glucose. This lasted 3 hours!

After that, for the next six days, every time I ate a meal I reacted the same way. The shaking fits combined with a panic attack lasted between 3 and 5 hours. Five days after the jab I had an attack that lasted a horrific 17 hours. I was nearly out of my mind with distress caused by the adrenaline coursing through me uncontrollably. Afterwards I felt completely depleted and exhausted like never before.

I phoned the clinic who supplied it, and was told a pharmacist would call me back but he never did. I then got an emergency appt with my GP who explained that it was a known side-effect, and is listed online under the Mounjaro side effects list. There was no antidote so she put me on Valium to stop the shakes and I had to use Rescue Remedy as well. It was a week of hell during which I was unable to function, just spent the whole time managing the violent reaction. Needless to say, the pen went straight in the bin.

I was just wondering if anyone else on here had experienced the same thing, or am I totally unique?

ShawnaMacallister · 21/12/2025 06:44

It's a known side effect?! Since when? That sounds horrific but I've never heard of anything like that happening to anyone before.

Zempy · 21/12/2025 07:12

I have been part of the online WLI community for a year and never heard of anything remotely like this.

Do make sure it’s fully investigated. 💐

Tereseta · 21/12/2025 07:13

It is a diabetic drug and a known side affect. I have had similar but not as bad symptoms, but I am prescribed monjaro for Diabetes.

Itsjusttoomuchtoday · 21/12/2025 07:17

Only once but not this bad. I had being swimming first thing in the morning, in the pool at 6.30. I don’t normally have breakfast but after swimming so early I was going to have some but then small kids got in the way. Then I had a latte at soft play which had too much caffine in so I struggled to eat lunch - I’m very caffine sensitive. I thought I felt ill so took my temp and found it to be low. I realised it was probably low sugar so ate some of the kids sugary sweet and within 30 mins was feeling better.

Mysticmaiden · 21/12/2025 07:20

It does lower blood sugar, for the first 2 weeks I was on it I would get daily hypos on mornings with headaches but a lot more milder than you, felt shaky, dizzy, difficult to concentrate, no energy and anxiety. I was prediabetic when I started on it. I lost the weight, had to reduce doses on mj but still had mild nausea, zero energy and anxiety symptoms for the first few days after a jab, when I hadn't eaten a while, as well as 11 months of hair loss, i was on mj for 14 months, my bmi is 22.7 now.
A month ago i switched to wegovy, but I don't have any symptoms on wegovy. Wegovy lacks the GIP agonist that mounjaro has which results in strong blood sugar control.

Try a high protein, low carb diet which works really well for weight loss.

Landlubber2019 · 21/12/2025 07:25

I struggle to diet because of the same, normally a little protein will alleviate the issues but I need to act fast.if I ignore the symptoms, I feel so unwell and end up binging on sugar! What were you eating alongside the jabs?

Charlenedickens · 21/12/2025 07:52

If this is real sounds like anxiety, which on the rare occasion Valium is still prescribed that’s what it’s for.

The first course of action should have been to take the patient off the non-critical WLI

Not prescribe a very strong sedative

I don't think OP took another dose after the first one? You can't take someone off something they have only taken one dose of!

Localfriend · 21/12/2025 08:16

Very little time lapsed between last dose and HCP app. And Valium immediately prescribed. There just be a background of serious anxiety unrelated to this

The op is having panic attacks and given Valium, if this is real, which I doubt, then there is a significant anxiety issue at play.

the drug can cause blood sugar drops, that is a known side effect, but that’s not what this is, extreme anxiety,

Exactly

Exactly

Diazepam can be prescribed for tremor and withdrawal as well as anxiety.

This sounds a very, very unusual reaction.

I hope this thread doesn’t put anyone off trying mounjaro because for every person experiencing a bad reaction there are hundreds of people who are perfectly fine and it really is a life changing drug for those of us who had been very seriously overweight.

That's so interesting to hear. I'm not alone, then, just had a much more violent reaction. I've been on keto for 4 months and had lost 16lb and took the jab because I was impatient to lose more, and quicker. Especially seeing people online who had lost double or treble that in that time.

It's a known side effect that it lowers blood sugar. I thought that would be a good thing. Turns out it's not a good thing for me personally because it made my plummet, which caused the adrenaline to gush. OMG never again!

I was eating keto. On the day it started, stewed meat and brussels sprouts.

Nope. I'm not an anxious person at all. And, obviously, I did not take my second dose when it was due 2 days ago.

My GP recorded it as a reaction to the drug and said that in her opinion the reaction would get less each day. She thought it would last about another week, but it was just one more day, and each one was milder than the previous one.

I'm now back to my normal, calm. laid-back self, thank goodness!

I have just noticed that under my thread Mumsnet has listed similar posts, and it seems that I am indeed NOT alone in having had this reaction. I shall definitely read every one of those threads.

Op. No one is saying low blood sugar is not a side effect. No one is saying people don’t get anxiety. What they are saying is this was a reaction to you taking the drug, you had panic attacks and anxiety and that’s why you have Valium.

Yes it was caused by MJ.

The bad reaction has now completely ceased. I've done a bit of googling as well as finding others on here who had the same or similar reactions, I have found people posting about it all over social media.

Shame as I was excited about taking MJ and had no gastro-intestinal issues that others get like diarrhoea, burps and constipation.

do you feel it was the act of taking mounjaro that caused it, not the drug itself, do you maybe feel that’s more likely?

either way, it’s done now, and you can find another way to lose weight, good luck.

crumbssonmyface · 21/12/2025 13:01

It really sucks you had such a bad reaction to it. I think most people don’t experience this, and just get nausea or stomach ache, it comes as a bit of a shock when this happens. I started MJ in October 24, and the first week was horrific, but completely different to everything I had read/researched. I got a similar hypo on the first night (after a few hours) and was shaking so badly - almost called the ambulance too. That same week, I got the worst panic attacks out of nowhere and heart palpitations. I always try and reply to these threads because it’s so important people who do experience similar reactions understand they’re not alone in it. Now I know it was a blood sugar crash, and also a known symptom is panic attacks/severe anxiety for some people. I did manage to continue on, but at a half dose, and I ate a lot more sugar and feel better. Can’t believe I feel my best once I’ve had a chocolate or a couple of biscuits these days/glucose tabs. I still get anxiety around shot day, but it’s nothing like that first week.

just wanted to say I really hope you feel better soon, and it is such a shock to experience something like that! If you have a look on Reddit and FB there are so many similar threads! So you’re not alone in it x

I can’t understand why she would put you on Valium, an addictive drug! Mournjaro clearly isn’t for you, try switching to Wygovy which is actually for weight loss!
