Alcohol hindering weightloss

I haven’t drank alcohol since I started Mounjaro in August as I haven’t had the urge (used to drink a fair bit!). The last couple of weeks I’ve had a few social occasions where I’ve had wine, and have noticed that If I drink alcohol, I won’t lose weight. Or will even put on a tiny bit. Even though my calories are still in a deficit (although not as big a deficit on the days I drink alcohol).

Research seems to suggest this could be because of general inflammation, or water retention from hormones reacting to the alcohol. But probably mainly because alcohol is seen as a toxin, so the body spends time burning this instead of burning fat.

After 2 weeks of no weight shift (previously losing 2-4lbs a week) I think I’ll go back to not drinking until I want to maintain (I still have 1 stone to lose).

Anyone else found the same?

Seems on every level it would be a good idea for you to refrain

Alcohol is pure carbs, carbs cause 3g water retention per gram carb consumed. Its also high calories so 700cals in one bottle of wine, not sure about other drinks but you can look it up.

@Mysticmaidenthanks, that does make sense.
I thought it would be ok as I didn’t binge or anything, just a couple of glasses of red wine each time. And healthy eating during the day beforehand. It just seems my body much preferred the lifestyle without the sugar and toxins.

Will be back to abstinence now and see what happens.

I have to avoid carbs too, I have been prediabetic for years and had insulin resistance since I was 18, size 12 and a big bloated carb belly is a sign. Now I've lost 4st size 10 limiting carbs, my belly is almost flat. Doesn't mean you can't have it every now and again as a treat, maybe save it for special events?

This happens to me too, but it’s water for me, and drops off within two days.

My friends go around for this problem is to take a dulcolax or two. Seems utter madness to me but works well for her.

Put it into perspective. Its approx 3500 calories for 1 pound of fat so unless you have had that amount extra its not actual fat gain.
Your doing great :)

Yes!

To be honest I’m not really even enjoying drinking anymore either. Has one glass of Prosecco last night night and I feel terrible today.

Disturbia81 · 21/12/2025 12:18

It hit home for me how it’s not just about calories but things that cause water retention. I found the best salad and was so happy, full of olives, feta, spicy chicken and it was very low calories. But my god the water retention! So many salty things in it. I guess alcohol is the same. So it’s not fat but still makes the scales go up and we don’t like that.

This is so true, I always know if I've had processed food or alcohol, which doesn't happen often, that the body doesn't like it, it's why I was fat in the first place, mounjaro has helped me see not just low cals but what you put in your body regardless of cals is really important.
