Ok, so I have the main dinner sorted. Plus a starter. And I will buy a dessert.

Just realised that there is snacking - remember that? Ha ha

I will have 6 people - I couldn't care less but for those of you hosting, what are you buying to keep the snackers happy and ensuring there isn't food waste for when they are gone?

Ive ordered some Waitrose party snacks along with cheese, grapes and fruit. Trying to keep it super simple and stuff that can stay out for a few hours so people can help themselves if they get peckish.

I always did the same as previous years, I also had small portions and nibbly little bits, I just didn’t eat to excess. To be honest I don’t really get how people forget how to do it as they are no longer interested.

What time are you serving main dinner - that makes a big difference

I only have my DH and 3 (adult) kids for xmas day but I thought about this, I have a small amount of cheese and biscuits, tub of celebrations and heroes and some foxes biscuits. I have also bought everyone biscuits in their stockings.

Usually I would buy a lot more cheese (so we're eating it into Jan) a tub of each variety of chocolates, pates and truck loads of part baked bread, plus loads of frozen party food.

I have decided that this year we will have enough for xmas day, boxing day and 27th for dinners, then will work out from there what we want to eat rather than getting 2 weeks worth of treat food in All my lot need to eat less, they are all overweight (due to various and genuine reasons) but I am hoping me doing this will encourage better habits from them.

I think decide what time you’re eating and work from there. We’re eating around 3pm so I tell everyone to have a decent breakfast and then I leave bowls of sweets (Roses etc) around. If someone is starving, they can help themselves to the fridge but I think people will snack less as long as they roughly what time they’re eating.

Thanks everyone. Dinner will be about 3pm ish.

I'll dial back on the cheese, get some chocolates and perhaps just a few packs of snacks.

Depends how long people have between breakfast and main meal. I personally would look for something a bit more substantial than just chocolate, maybe some cheese, bread or crackers, breadsticks, some ham you can slice as desired. All will last if properly wrapped up again.
A decent fruitbowl, bananas, pears, apples. Things which last and just point them to a knife.
