Lost 3 stone - still not gone down a dress size

I feel like I post this every two weeks. But today I wore a size 18 dress from M&S I bought two years ago in the sale. It's chiffon with a side zip. No streach and fitted. I wore it this time last year. I wore it today. I can maybe pull it loose one inch below my bust where it is the most fitted. How does this work? Where has the three stone gone? There is zero chance I squeezed into it before as its fitted chiffon. It would have ripped. I wouldn't comfortably get into a smaller size of this dress either. I put my height and weight into AI who said I'd be a UK size 14-16. I'm a size 20. I don't mind. But I look thinner. I can't work it out?

A side-zip is a killer…

@dontletmedownbruce are you sure your breast tissue is fatty tissue? Mine unfortunately are denser so takes a lot more to lose anything from them. Not sure of the biology stuff but just know from mammograms and scans that mine are dense rather than just fat (wonder if I can use that excuse for the rest of me 😁)

Thanks for this, @katscamel

I’ve been reading this morning. I’ve only had one mammogram and the lady commented that I have ‘extremely dense’ breasts. I googled what this means, and it means your breasts are full of fibrous tissue and glands, with not much fat.

I was so clueless. I just thought breasts were fatty tissue, but as you pointed out, not all of them are.

This is so disappointing. I feel that however much weight I lose, I’ll never reduce the size of my 32Fs. Seriously thinking about a breast reduction now.

Yes I took measurements. They don't seem much different either 🤣

I can grab some inches under the bust on this dress. Maybe they wasn't there before. But it certainly feels the same.

My starting waist was 41 and it's 40 now. Top of top thighs was 25" now it's 24" so only a inch off. So weird. My ankles are thinner because I can zip my boots up now. But by measuring them, they have got bigger!

The first dress size can feel like it takes forever. If you have lost 3 stone it has gone from somewhere.
I am nearly 6 stone down (5’11) and have gone from a 20/22 to a comfortable 14 still a little to go as aiming for a 12 in next sizing. I still wear a lot of 16’s which I would say fit but they are large(!) You might find that although one size fits if you tried it in a different size it would also fit

I am both depressed and uplifted by this thread! I was expecting to be at least one dress size smaller by now.

I am just round, from neck to knee. An absolute blob. At the worst, I was just shy of 17st, and it was only through stubbornness that I wasn't wearing size 24 clothes. I refused to buy bigger. I am 5ft 2ins, so the weight really shows on me. I am currently 14st 5lbs.

I have lost 2.5stone since mid-September, but I'm not seeing a change in dress size. My bra size has gone from a J cup to a HH - minimal.

I'm waiting to hear from the weight management programme associated with my GP surgery as I'm really not sure what I'm doing re weight loss. I'm also starting an introductory course on exercise at the beginning of January - also referred by my GP.

I will stop beating myself up now, and wait for another stone or so to shift, to see some body changes. I'm glad I came across this thread, as it's made ne realise I was being impatient

I'm 5'4 and 12st and I wear a 12 now in most things, except a 14 in some trousers. So I think it must very much depend on body shape as people said and also that it happens very quick - I went from a size 18 to a size 14 seemingly overnight!

I'm 5'4 and 16st 10lb and fitting in to my old size 16 tops, having previously been a 20/22 top and a 22/24 trousers, and can just squeeze into a pair of size 16 jeggings I bought from Poundland the other day. They are still a bit neat around the spare tyre (thanks to 3 kids and 3 c/s) I've lost almost 4st so far.

It's so strange the way our weight can distribute so differently.

Bra size - have you checked your back size? That might have gone down; it's easy not to notice your back size reducing because it's so well elasticated.

Ok , I dont use injections, but Ive been on the weight loss journey for three years now.

Not a soul noticed until I had lost over 10% go my starting weight

And only a few people - close friends - not acquaintances

Clothe sizes, going from an 18 to a 14 dress size felt huge for me, but looking back at the pictures, to my eye , I was still a big lass

We went out today, I put a frock on and DH said - there's nowt off you Yet for me, I still see the wobbly flabby belly and I keep ordering too large a size

For us who got so big we needed to loose weight , I think we get hung up on sizes and shapes , We need to stop that and concentrate on being healthy

Clothes sizes are pure shite anyway

I was looking a top in my wardrobe, Im a modern sized 12 now ( tops ) I pulled out tops that are 20 years old ( at least ) all huge

I now no longer look at the label. I can buy anything for XS to a Large . I can wear a size 12 coat and yet buy a 14 in a jumper.. Just try the clothes

Just wanted to update. I have actually gained a few pounds over Easter but I have finally gone down to a size 16 / 14 without loosing any more weight overall since I posted this. I did loose more but gained it again as I didn't inject over Easter.

Very strange. I can only assume it took a while for the fat loss to redistribute itself. I bought wide legs jeans in M&S at Christmas the sale. I can pull the 16 down without undoing then now. Tried on Oliver Bonas jeans in a size 16 and the assistant said they swamped me. Bought lots of Medium.and size 16 in Primark yesterday too. Weirdly bra size is the same.

Still happily wearing my size 20 dresses and leggings. But finally my loss is being shown in the mirror. My tum is still disproportionately big but after 4 kids I think that's parted muscles and will not recover.

So it wasn't in my head or me being tight with cash.it just wasn't being lost evenly

That's an interesting update, thank you.

Have you been exercising? I think that does help tone.

I've lost a similar amount, and have just gone down to where generally a size 16 fits comfortably.
From what I've read, it can take an age to go down the first dress size, but then it's often quick

NotPerfectlyAdverage · 18/04/2026 14:27

No, nothing has changed exercise wise either. Still want to get to nearer to 12 stone when I re join a gym. Just the normal walking. I do need to do weight bearing. There's always an excuse not to start

To cheer you up apparently it can take six months for the body to adjust inches wise. How weird is that.

Really? That's interesting and encouraging. I seemed to lose about 4 or 5 inches relatively quickly, but now the inches aren't being lost at the same rate as the weight loss, iyswim. I'd be glad if the inches re-adjusted soon!

Good update op. I went quite quickly from an 18 to a 16. Then it took ages to get to a 14. But I have gone from a 14 to a 12 disproportionately quickly from the actual weight loss. Maybe 6 lbs ish took me from one to another!

I really hope so. I feel dread that all I have lost is muscle. I guess there's no way to know for sure. I'm going to up my exercise in the new year. Before I lost the weight I was too out of puff to have much energy.

I was wondering about muscle loss too. Has your waist got smaller? Since most of us hold excess fat around the waist, the waist usually gets smaller if we lose fat. But I don’t suppose this is true all the time.

I’m much taller than you. I’m sure I was down at least a dress size when I had lost 3 stone. I’m now 5 stone down and am 3 sizes down.

I’ve got scales that track fat mass, bone mass etc. I would recommend them. I doubt they are particularly accurate but I think the trend is probably accurate. They are cheap on Amazon £25ish.
