Mounjaro whilst breastfeeding

Before I got grilled I am not saying I want to am going to start it. Im purely curious. I had surgery when baby was 5 weeks old due to an infection that had been building up throughout the pregnancy. Afterwards I was in hospital for 2 weeks and on extremely strong medication. The doctor said I could still feed baby when family brought him. I asked if its something thats researched he said the ones I am on hadn't been however almost all medication wont pass through breastmilk and if it does the amount is so tiny it is basically destroyed before it gets into babies tummy. These meds were way way stronger than mounjaro. Ive also read posts in the past of BF moms whos doctor has given the go ahead to use it . MJ is not new and there's no hard research to say it is passed through which is why people say avoid it but It just made me think 6 months on with what I had to go through. I get it can stop you eating and you need nutrients to pass to baby, im purely talking about the passing through milk.

To add Ive spoken to my GP about this and hes also said I can get MJ whilst BF sending me different studies to look at it. I personally just am not comfortable to do it until ive stopped. ( im overweight from previous issues)

Well NHS England certainly don't recommend Mounjaro while breastfeeding.

Message Wendy at the drugs in BM helpline. She was very helpful when I had some questions

I’d personally wait. I don’t see the point in bf if taking unknown risks like that.

You’ll always find the odd Dr who say it’s ok, but likely are not experts in the area at all. There have not been clinical trials so the risks are unknown and that would be too high a risk for me to take for my child.

Your GP will prescribe you Mounjaro?

Anyway, I personally wouldn’t see the point of taking an unnecessary risk with a medication where there is pretty much no data on this.

PurpleFlower1983 · 09/11/2025 23:54

The don’t prescribe Mounjaro to anyone who is breastfeeding. Why would you take the risk?

thepurgebegins · 09/11/2025 23:58

@PurpleFlower1983 if you read my post I said i would not and I am not comfortable taking it whilst breast feeding. The fact some gps say its okay including mine and others say no makes you think about the other advice they give. Im NOT taking any risk.

Not mounjaro, but a recent study on wegovy suggests it doesnt pass into milk:

Semaglutide - Drugs and Lactation Database (LactMed®) - NCBI Bookshelf https://share.google/7glb8bgbBPxN1uUl8

Tiny short study based on only 8 participants, where mothers were asked to report adverse sign effects, no studies on the infants.

Study itself says - study examined milk donated by participants but did not measure milk production or composition. Accelerated weight loss has the potential to reduce milk production and alter milk nutrient composition and/or deplete maternal nutrients, which should be observed in future studies to determine the extent of this effect and related maternal and infant outcomes.

Which, to me along with lack of research, negates the main point of bf if the quality of your milk is potentially affected.
