Not overweight enough

I'm just into the overweight category and a doctor in my BUPA health assessment said I need to lose weight. I'm active (run, cycle), vegetarian, don't drink much. My vice is my sweet tooth and stress eating. I thought Mounjaro might help with the cravings, but I've just done an online consultation and because my BMI isn't 30, I don't meet the criteria... I feel that I've got to get more unhealthy before I can access this tool which might help now. I'm confused as as definitely seen people online who don't have/haven't has a BMI of 30 saying they've used it. How?!

At the moment these medications are given with very strict criteria. For example, to get it directly from a GP you have to have a BMI of over 40 with 4 health conditions. That will change over time (loosen) and people who are classed as obese but not as obese as this or who dont have health conditions will get them. No one suggested they would be handed out to people who are not obese.

@Hotflushesandchilblains you are describing the NHS decision on guidelines for prescribing, not the MHRA prescribing criteria that apply to both private and NHS prescriptions. The NHS guidelines for prescribing were decided based on a cost and practicalities basis, and they have created several stages as you describe. So initially from this summer, for a GP or other local service to directly prescribe Mounjaro (rather than patients having to be referred to specialist weight management), you would need a BMI of 40 with 4 out of 5 specific weight related health conditions. The next tranche would be with fewer comorbidities, then lower BMI etc etc.

Given the topic of the discussion, a poster whose BMI is only just into the overweight category, it was reasonable to assume that when you talked about loosening restrictions you meant the MHRA prescribing guidelines, not the NHS rollout programme guidelines.

The thread is about a private prescription where it is 30 and 27, it’s right there in the op that is what she’s talking about, not the nhs, everyone knows the nhs will bring it in line with the private prescription’s over 12 years.

I took it with a BMI of 27; I had high cholesterol and previously diagnosed PCOS. I suspect some people lie and say they have PCOS / high blood pressure or whatever. Maybe even say BMI is 27 when it’s 26 (take unflattering photos).

Have you had any blood tests?

I was around BMI 28, but have high cholesterol so was able to order Mounjaro because of that.

I know somebody who lied about their height on the form and took an unflattering photo. I think their bmi was 28, not 30.

If i was only slightly overweight I wouldn't want to go on it though! You can get horrible side effects...

Sure, but they are still overweight, the key thing is no one with a bmi of 17 or 18 can easily access, as you need to provide id and current images, sure some will get round it but will be a tiny minority, the vast majority of people accessing will be overweight,
