For cheaper drugs in the USA. Maybe the prices will drop here too?

Must have been a stressful deal….one of the healthcare company execs passed out in the Oval Office during the live press conference to announce the deal. Sounds like it will be $240 for “injections” in the USA now, assume thats mounjaro?

The deal has a special name, “favoured nation” or something, whereby the price in the US will never be more than the cheapest place elsewhere in the world.
we think mj took a price hike here in August. It’s still far far cheaper than it costs in the US, which does seem crazy.

No chance it will reduce the prices here. They were raised here because EL knew they would have to lower their US prices. Trump demanded the US prices are the lowest in the world. EL had to raise the UK prices to temper how much they had to lower their US prices.

Most favoured nation is a contractual term. It effectively means you get the lowest price of all buyers. It’s the name trump also gives to his policy’s.

It doesn’t mean there is a most favoured nation clause in the contract, there may be, but there may not be. It is something most try to avoid due to complexity to administer and limitations it poses.

An example being a country like Mexico, or another country with a lower national income, it could mean you can’t access that market as you need to keep your price above the USA. You also have forex impacts, meaning if something happens to the US dollar, other countries could drop below their pricing, meaning you need to constantly monitor forex across the world and move USA pricing accordingly or you breach contract.

i doubt there is a most favoured nation clause, and trump just uses this term to say he wants the best pricing in the world.

both novo and el Lilly have done a deal, and in return they avoid tariffs for 3 years, so it covers all drugs now on the market, from ozempic, to mounjaro, and a price agreed for the pill form. The deal seems mutually beneficial. They get wide access to the market, and Americans get better pricing, it won’t be the crazy 1000 dollar a pen stuff we see, but it’s still very expensive at over 300 usd for the higher doses.

So the price is lower, but still comparable to other countries, and much of it is hidden in the USA insurance system, as now both Medicare and Mediaid will ne able to provide, meaning much wider access for Americans, thus enabling the obesity issue to be more widely addressed and the health conditions obesity causes, alleviated.

there is also a deal done on the tablet form of el Lilly’s drug, and it seems to be lower cost than the pens, likely as it is not as effective but also enables el Lilly to barter it for wide access to maintain the higher price point of the pens.

none of it means any other countries prices will drop. Our goverment don’t appear to give a shit and have done a deal for the nhs whilst agreeing an increase for private prescriptions, but also limiting it on the nhs. Where I think it will remain limited until generic versions of wegovy hit the market.

@Rumpledandcrumpled yes, I think the agreement is that they will provide the drugs “at most favoured nation prices”, so mj injectables will be around $250 rather than 3 or 4 times that, and will now be available via Medicare etc.
A huge change for patients in the US, but I agree, it certainly won’t make anything cheaper here.

As you say the lower price will be available for medicaid/medicare. I doubt the price will come down for American's paying privately for their meds.

Not a fan of Trump but this is great for Americans. Seems like he’s a good negotiator!
