Does MJ give you more energy?

A friend of mine is about half way through their MJ journey, has lost 30+kg and has seen their energy absolutely soar over the past couple of months. They’re getting up and going for 2hr runs at 5am! I’m so thrilled for them.

Their weight-loss has been steady, but not the fastest as they have still been eating calorie dense foods, just less of them. (No judgement here, I’m just trying to explain that I think they are still on approximately a medium total calorific daily intake, including alcohol, carbs etc. Not just cabbage soup and celery!)

I’m considering starting as I am into the obese category with my BMI, but the thing that has always put me off is the risk of being more tired than I already am. So I’d love to hear what others experiences have been.

All personal experiences welcome! Has being on MJ increased or decreased your energy levels? Have you been on the lowest possible daily calorific intake or medium or high?

Although saying that I feel as I would normally while consuming only half the calories so I suppose it’s likely made up the energy ‘gap’. As if I was on 1000 calories without it I’d be exhausted.

That’s a really interesting perspective, thank you. As I said, my friend definitely isn’t eating low low calories. Maybe that’s the secret to keeping the energy levels up?

I don’t think there is a secret, people have other issues that impact their energy levels, be it sleep, the weight they are currently carrying, stress, through to mental health. As said, factually it makes your fat available to fuel you, so you are not hungry, and it’s proven energy slumps don’t happen as they do with diets without the drugs, as your fat makes up the energy difference. I’m sure there is more science behind it, which is beyond me to explain , I guess you can google.

so assuming something else not reducing energy levels, then with reduced weight and optimism at the success, people will have the same or more energy.

but again it is very individual as energy can be impacted by so many things.

Not for me, was full of energy before, bmi 32, I've lost 2 stone, bmi now about 28, but being in calorie deficit makes me tired/feel less energetic, Iin my early 50s if that makes a difference, I wasn't expect to feel tireder but I do

Incognitoburrito88 · 26/10/2025 14:49

Nope it’s made me exhausted. I’ve lost slowly - 3 st in 6 months. Pre WLI I was cycling, running and lifting weights. Once I went beyond 2.5 mg my energy levels really dropped and I was struggling even to cycle to work. I’m now at goal and have dropped from 5mg to 3.75mg while increasing my calories a bit. My energy has returned in the last couple of weeks and I did go for a run at 5:45 on Friday! So for me - no increase in energy but now as I’m tapering down it’s coming back and I’m much better at running because I’m three stones lighter!

DanceDanceRevolutions · 01/11/2025 11:54

Suspect it depends what your energy levels were like to start with.

For me, MJ has left me exhausted. I've been moving injection days around to see if that helps, as injecting on a Friday was leaving me too wiped out for my long run on a Sunday.

But ruining my exercise schedule and leaving me thinner but wiped out might be the thing that stops me taking it.

The weightloss and exercise have given me more energy. The MJ has given me less pain and inflammation. I think it makes me a bit weary, though. Especially at first I was very tired in the evenings. Worth it.

I eat about 1500/1600 calories a day, although today I have hit 2100!

I have also lost 7 stone and have more energy than I have had the majority of my adult life. Partly due to the weight loss and partly due to the increase in decent sleep (have got rid of sleep apnoea) also no longer struggling with type 2 diabetes

JMSA · 01/11/2025 22:04

Despite losing nearly 5st, my energy levels have never been so bad.
No exaggeration.

Me being on this has coincided with peri-menopause so I don't know what has caused what. My hair is much thinner and I am tired all the time with no energy but TBF I am not eating a healthy balanced diet.

Allmarbleslost · 01/11/2025 22:11

No the opposite for me unfortunately. I'm eating around 1700 calories a day too so it's not lack of food causing my exhaustion.

Zebracat · 01/11/2025 22:20

I have way more energy. Walking lots, swimming x5 per week, house is cleaner. My sleep has improved too. I eat very well though, and I’m losing slowly, and gaining muscle.

Are you fully hydrated and also eating clean, blood sugar variations ie if you still have an unhealthy diet, snd dehydration can cause exhaustion. Also food can provide a dopamine hit for some that masks other things ie depression, eating your feelings type thing, so if you take some of that enjoyment away, as you’re on a diet, it can also cause a feeling of exhaustion linked to mental health.

most people feel more energy snd feel fantastic, and losing weight provides a huge mental boost, so I’d check diet is clean and healthy and fully hydrated and also look at mental health and if anything there.

KentishMama · 05/11/2025 08:44

Initially I felt more tired, probably because my body was dealing with side effects and a fairly big calorie deficit, but still had to lug around a lot of weight.
However. My energy got better and better as I approached my goal weight. Now that I'm at goal I'm the most energetic I've been since my 20s, to the point where I'm in the gym three times a week and really enjoying it!
