To really dislike MN weightloss adverts. Constant. Fat-shaming

There are two in particular by Zava, a weight loss injection distributor. The photos are of a perfectly happy, smiling woman walking along with her two children enjoying the day. I guess she is overweight, but not spectacularly so. Why have they put children in the advert? Why are these two adverts being shown constantly every time I visit MN? I only visit weight loss injections once every couple of weeks. But these adverts by Zava are constantly bombarding me, no matter where I am on the site, every time I visit. I don’t usually use the phrase “fat shaming” but in this case I will. I have tried to attach one of the photos so you get an idea. But MN may not allow me to attach, as sometimes they mark photos as sensitive. The other photo is a woman walking in the park laughing with her children. Advertising weight loss injections is fine of course, but why these rude, negative photos?

there are three zava adds on this page alone. And yesterday they were all over the site as
well as promote posts it’s constant.

no one is saying weightloss is bad. But consistently bombarding a womens/mums focussed site with weightloss stuff daily is pretty grim

Grim?

What about adverts for nicotine patches and cessation services, would they be grim? For years and years when we had a population that smoked more, we had (quite rightly) a bombardment of ads and public information posters and advice about stop smoking.

Because smoking isnt good for you and people need to stop
Because being considerably overweight isnt good for you and people need to lose weight

These medications for weight loss are life savers, savers for the health of a family and their future. Quite right people are informed of them

Although they should be available on the NHS but thats for another thread

Reading this thread back just now, Zava have four adverts!

Its because you're on the weight loss section

I have a thread in food and drink at the moment about a coffee pot. Guess what adverts Im being shown all over the screen when Im in that thread?

And when Im in food and drink general, its gusto or hello fresh or Ocado or whatever.

Tailored ads, thats what the internet is.

Scarlettpixie · 10/10/2025 13:03

I don't see the problem. It's just advertising. They are showing happy active women/families and are offering a weightloss service (not a particular drug). Women like the ones in the photos are their target audience. Some of them have kids and will want to loose weight and get healthy because of them. I am not sure how that is shaming or why it matters that kids are in the photos. My only complaint is that there must be a lot of them but I blank them out and only realised that there were 4 on this page alone all for Zava after reading your post!!

3luckystars · 10/10/2025 13:04

I haven’t noticed them at all. They must be hitting a nerve with you.

Why is the picture bothering you, she is just out walking? I think it’s a good ad to get out walking. I’m a big fan of it.

VioletandMauve · 10/10/2025 13:04

I agree, but it’s the manically smiling that does it for me. If they are so happy being overweight why is it an advert for weight loss?

LooseCanyon · 10/10/2025 13:05

Lanva · 10/10/2025 12:57

I think it's bloody awful tbh and we should put a stop to it. (I'm happily on WLI myself - I'm objecting to the advertising not the product)

Edited

What's wrong with it?

Mumofmarauders · 10/10/2025 12:05

I haven’t noticed the ads but I do think that photo is a horrible choice because the mum looks happy and active. Surely weight loss products should be targeted at people whose health or lifestyle is compromised by their weight 🤷🏽‍♀️

Completely ignorant of the impact of obesity

You can be happy and active, running round after your kids all day, be confident, look nice etc etc

But that extra fat is playing havoc with your hormones, your pancreas, your liver, clogging and surrounding your vital organs. The extra weight is putting pressure thats not necessary on your joints, your pelvic floor.

Thats without all the very small societal impacts of being obese, too big to fit comfortably into plane seats, theatre seats, seat belts dont fit properly and strangle you while you're driving, clothes dont hang properly, thighs rub together more easily. I couldnt even get a fit bit with a strap long enough to fit my wrists, I went without a watch for many years as I couldnt find a nice one to fit me.

The list is endless

MargoLivebetter · 10/10/2025 13:25

@lakesidelagoon it is because you are in the WLI section! If you head off to threads about Christmas, then you get ads for Christmas stuff or the gardening threads, it is about house / garden stuff.

The ads are connected to the pages you are looking at!!!! If you go less to the Weight Loss threads then you'll see less of those types of ads - or pay and then you won't see any at all.

CarefulN0w · 10/10/2025 13:28

Best practice in advertising weightloss products is not to stigmatise people and to show them leading normal, active and success lives. Just like these adverts do.

There’s no need to judge fat people for having children or leaving the house, OP.

Charlenedickens · 10/10/2025 14:49

hmm, I mean it’s fairly normal to show fat people when advertising something dietary, you can’t use a slim person really and you can’t use no one. The woman looks obese, so very likely in the category to be eligible for the injections, I don’t see it as shaming to be honest. It’s like saying floor cleaner adverts shouldn’t show dirty floors as it’s shaming people with minging houses.

Charlenedickens · 10/10/2025 14:51

VioletandMauve · 10/10/2025 13:04

what point are you making, that fat people walk about looking miserable? Or to advertise weight loss injections you should show unhappy fat people?

Charlenedickens · 10/10/2025 14:54

lakesidelagoon · 09/10/2025 12:08

OK, maybe I’m being over sensitive.

First it’s the bombardment.

Second, the implication that this happy mum enjoying her life needs to diet. She might be happy with her weight, or is that not allowed, is the implication I feel.

Third, the fact there children.

I think you’re being very over sensitive .

first, I agree too many ads in general, for many companies, not just this one.
second, the fact she’s happy and enjoying her life doesn’t mean she doesn’t need to diet, she is obese and that carries a lot of health implications. Obesity is the biggest killer we have. The fact she’s happy at that moment doesn’t mean her obesity isn’t an issue or she’s happy with her weight.

also she’s just a model for an advert.

so what if there are kids, im a mother, i take mounjaro, they aren’t advertising heroin,

This ⬆️

Its fairly obvious I would have thought. I think OP is being very over sensitive I'm afraid.

Don’t be ridiculous. I meant the stupid grinning on their faces, regardless of their size.

I’ve tried to get rid of them by going to add choices. But I can’t!!!

You could use a browser app for MN like DuckDuckGo and be free of all the adverts and all the problems the sheer proliferation of them cause (freezing of screen, overheating of phone, battery drainage).

But the woman isn't fat!!??? She looks perfectly healthy to me, def below bmi 30 so wouldn't be eligible. I'm bmi 20 so I don't feel fatshamed personally but I'm angry on all women's behalf.

Mumsnet doesn't collect or keep your payment details.

They're handled by a company called Stripe.

MN’s own terms and conditions - the small print - would suggest otherwise. But each to their own.

Really? Where? Because it looks like Stripe handles the payments to me, Mumsnet don't do that or they would have to sign up as a financial service provider.

Can you point out where they suggest otherwise?

I think Justine and the HQ moderators would like to know, because they swear blind that only Stripe collects and stores payment details.

She looks obese to me, I think people have lost sight of what obesity looks like. And I’m sure that Zava made sure when picking rhe model she met the criteria to be eligible for the drugs. I mean that’s the basics,
