Does this sound familiar?

  • Pill caused significant weight gain, mood changes, libido loss (late teens /early 20’s)

  • Labor induction led to overstimulation from the prostaglandin (1 in 1000 people have this reaction) (30’s)

  • HRT caused heart palpitations and weight gain (40’s)

  • I’m slightly insulin resistant according to dietary therapist blood tests (almost 50!)

Am desperately trying to loose the extra 3 stone I need to shift to get to a healthy bmi…

  • I lift weights
  • I eat low carb
  • I take a multitude of supplements (advised by dietary therapist)

But still no flipping weight loss!

I’m perimenopausal, everything hurts, I am very tempted to try WLI - but am wondering if I’d just have a bad reaction to it, because of my previous reactions.

Is anyone out there similar who has tried WLI and been ok with it? I’d love to know.

Thanks ☺️

note: Thread title should obvs say history- not historical- why can’t we edit the titles MN?!

Ok, well I'm now early 50s and I only share one part of your history, which is around the pill. Similarly, went on it in my early 20s and basically that's three years of my life I won't get back. Killed my sex drive, dried me out like the sahara, wrecked my mood, gave me abominable hangovers, blew my boobs up (and they weren't small to start with), weight gain. All the fun. The only time I used artificial hormones after that was, very rarely, to delay a period and the final time I did that in my 40s I basically exploded with bloat.

As a result of that I never wanted HRT, for which I'm grateful because I had a breast cancer scare a few years ago off my first mammogram. I'm now post menopausal.

All of this is to say I've had a largely trouble free time on MJ for six months now and lost over 4st so far. Yes, some minor side effects in the early days but the benefits have MASSIVELY outweighed that. Other than (or because of) the weight loss it's helped my blood pressure, I sleep better, no joint pain, and I have so much more energy.

If you're insulin resistant it should actually help with that - it's what it specifically does.

Thank you! I’m exactly the same with the huge boobs and the bloat! HRT has the same effect. I’m very tempted to try monjaro.

What is the number you’ve referenced regarding insulin resistance? If that’s HbA1C glucose reading then 50n/mol would be in the diabetic range. 42-47 n mol is pre-diabetic and 48+ is diabetic so you might want to check that out.

If your blood sugar is consistently high then you will have difficulty losing weight and will likely have other symptoms like increased hunger, need to urinate frequently and urgently, fatigue, darkened/velvety skin around neck, underarms, inner thighs and/or groin, possible vision changes, tingly/cold hands and feet.

I have lost weight both with and without WLI. if you want to do without it’s not enough to “eat low carb” you have to weigh and measure everything you eat to check that you are in a deficit. I have got on well with WLI as it’s meant I haven’t had to weigh / measure but I have managed to stick to the lowest dose (2.5mg).

That’s interesting thanks.
I’d love to stick to a low dose and lose at a healthy rate if possible!
Thinking I’m just going to try it and see how I get on.

I was just re-reading your original post and noticed the thing about HRT giving you palpitations. That's something I had in peri and in the first couple of weeks I did experience it on MJ, at night in particular.

I used deep slow breathing and the valsalva manoevre to calm it down (which is what I used to do when it happened in my mid-late 40s). It went away very quickly and hasn't happened since. Just wanted to warn you incase in happens to you and you worry it might stick around long term. It didn't with me.

Thank you. Good to know 👍
Almost ordered this morning then chickened out and went to the gym! 🙄😆

Hi, I started MJ in January and stayed on it for 12 weeks, lost 2 stones. Took a break April until mid September maintaining the whole time easily although not losing any more weight. Restarted 3 weeks ago with a view to doing 6 weeks in total and am well on the way to losing the last stone which takes me half a stone into the healthy bmi.

The reason I’m posting is because I have a history of being very sensitive to hormones. For example, when doing ivf (due to male infertility) I was put on half the normal starting dose and still ended up with too many eggs produced. 3 cycles in total and had to be closely monitored for all three because of this.

What I did when I got approved for wli (I was in the obese category by a few pounds fortunately) I started on half the dose recommended. So clicking 30 clicks on the 2.5mg pen. It was still a bit strong so the following week I reduced a bit lower and carried on like that, the highest I’ve got to is 1.8mg which is great because it’s been super cheap for me doing this and it still works. My suggestion would be start low, you can always go up the following week if you want to.

Thank you so much for sharing.
Didn’t know you could manage the doses like this.
I was worried about it being too strong to begin with!
