How to extract golden dose

I’m a bit confused on how to extract golden dose. If I get the syringes which already have a needle, won’t the needle be blunt once I’ve extracted the liquid from the pen?

i have use syringes with a needle and doesn’t seem to be blunt but if you are concerned you can order syringes with a drawing needle that you change over

SilenceInside · 03/10/2025 17:17

It will have pierced the red seal once, so will be possibly blunter than it was, but you should still be able to use it to inject.

If you are concerned about the needle being blunt, you can get 1ml syringes that have removable needles, so you can swap the needle after extracting. They are called Luer Lock syringes and Luer Lock compatible needles. Clearly, handling the syringe to change the needle brings with it the extra risk of accidentally sticking yourself with the needle when you’re putting the cap back on before removing it. So, it would be up to you to decide whether it’s something you’re happy to do.

The first time I did the extra dose the needle definitely felt blunt and I had to sort of shove it in. I didn’t like it at all.

So I got the lock luer ones mentioned above and they work brilliantly for me. One needle on to withdraw from the pen, then swap for a new needle to inject.

Thanks all I’m going to get the lock Luer ones! I’ve not done the golden dose and feels like a waste if I don’t, just a bit apprehensive

The needles are insulin needles which have been used to draw up insulin for many years. The needle is inserted into the top of the vial a medication drawn up , it is then injected into sub cutaneous fat . The needle does not become blunt during this process. Please don’t worry .

maz99 · 03/10/2025 21:23

Didn't feel blunt to me

FurForksSake · 03/10/2025 21:24

Don’t buy hundreds of them though, they are reducing the amount in the pen and getting rid of the golden dose.

TokenGinger · 04/10/2025 08:17

I can’t seem to find the luer lock ones with needle unless I’m searching the wrong thing. Do you have fo buy the needles separately?

Flakey99 · 04/10/2025 09:22

@winnieanddaisy is correct.

The insulin syringes are designed to extract the medication before being injected into the fat layer. They don’t become blunt.

I’ve been using the normal insulin syringes that come with an 8mm needle and it’s fine.

perimenopoppet · 04/10/2025 09:30

It’s really not blunt using the insulin needles. In my experience you do need to push just that tiny bit to insert the needle into you - it doesn’t slide in with zero resistance like the pen ones. But it’s not hard to do and not painful at all, the luer lock ones aren’t necessary.

JellyRains · 04/10/2025 10:55

Maybe not necessary but I find them useful, and I didn't enjoy having to shove the needle in when I did it the first time, when I'm used to the effortlessly pen needles. So I'm much happier with the luer lock.

WeAllHaveWings · 04/10/2025 11:32

Any fine needle is slightly blunted each time it pierces anything whether that is a rubber seal (one not designed to minimise needle blunting as shouldn’t be used this way) or skin.

That doesn’t mean the needle is fully blunt or unusable, but it is not as sharp as it was initially and may need a tiny bit of extra bit of pressure compared to a fresh pen needle.

If psychologically you feel more comfortable changing needles with the luer lock setup do that. I do too, but still find the needles not quite as keen as the pen needles.

I would do luer “lock” not luer “slip” - spiked myself with the slip one when I couldn’t get the first needle back off 😩.
