Hair loss help.. higher or lower dose?

Hi all,

I have been on Mounjaro since May this year. Total loss 3 stone. Current dose 7.5mg only been on this for 3 weeks. I intend on reducing this down to 5 on Sunday as I am nearing my goal weight. I prioritise protein, water intake and also take Biotin, zinc, Vitamin D and B12. I try not to expose my hair to constant heat damage and have started with Plantur 39. My hair loss/thinning started around a month or so ago. Has anyone found that when they reduced the dose it stopped so much of the hair loss, or even gone back down to 2.5? Im going to get a silk pillowcase and bonnet next week, see if that helps at all. I dont recall hair loss on 2.5mg. Any experiences??

It's not the mounjaro that causes hair loss, it's losing the weight itself and it would happen if you'd lost at the same rate without the MJ. The dose will make no difference. About 3-4 months in is a fairly normal point for it to start (same with me) . It will settle down and eventually go back to normal.

Look up telogen effluvium.

Some people find taking biotin and/or collagen helps.

Its a side effect so dose may make no difference. I am hoping it's temporary but its been horrendous for me. I have started pumpkin seed oil capsules but will try minoxodil if I have to

@GiveMeWordGamesIt IS the Mounjaro causing the hair loss and people need to read up on this as some are still not getting it. It’s a listed side effect

OP - the hair loss will ebb and flow and I didn’t find the dosage made much difference (I lost 5 and a half stone and now take a maintenance dose which I’ve done all year) - treat your hair gently, ensure your iron stores are sufficient and it’ll slow down

Thank you everyone. I'm losing pretty steadily now and taking it slower as I only want another 14lbs off and not particularly bothered how long it takes now. The doctor has booked me in today for bloods to just check on any deficiencies. However aslong as there is hope it stops eventually. Going to really start giving my hair a bit of a rest now I think through the winter. I just dont want to have to give up mounjaro completely. Have a nice evening all xx

I lost 5 stone years ago and lost a lot of hair . I wasn't on anything to help me lose weight , it can be a side effect of losing a lot of weight not just from MJ .

I picked the Asda online website to C&P this from but you can find the same info plenty of other places. Yes, it's listed as a side effect but that doesn't mean the mounjaro itself is causing it which means the size of dose will at most only indirectly affect it in the sense that it might affect how fast you lose weight.

\Does Mounjaro cause hair loss?
Yes, hair loss is listed as a common side effect of Mounjaro when it is used for weight management, affecting up to 10% of people. In a 2022 study, hair loss was reported in 4.9 to 5.7% of people taking the 5, 10, or 15mg dose of tirzepatide.

However, experts believe that it may not be the medication itself that is causing hair loss, but the rate at which you are losing weight. If you lose weight rapidly, your body can recognise this as a form of stress, causing hair loss.

Is hair loss a side effect of Mounjaro?
Although hair loss or alopecia is listed as a Mounjaro side effect, it may not be the medication itself that causes it. Instead, experts believe that the significant weight loss caused by GLP-1 medications, like Mounjaro and Wegovy, triggers a condition called telogen effluvium.

Telogen effluvium is a temporary condition where a significant number of hair follicles enter their resting phase early, causing increased shedding. In general, the shedding in acute telogen effluvium lasts for no longer than 6 months, and in some cases, it’s a lot less.

@GiveMeWordGames. Yes I know that. It’s just you opened your first post with a definitive statement that wasn’t quite correct and I see all the time people still trotting out that it isn’t the medication

of course people lose hair when they drop weight quickly or have cyclical shedding or have deficiencies. But it’s most definitely a side effect of MJ and it’s good for more people to be aware of that

Only just started. A bit annoyed that I didn't buy them ages ago to be honest! Keeping fingers crossed!

Well, this is going to be one of those agree to disagree situations. Because if someone was non-responder to MJ (there are some), took it for quite a while and barely lost any weight, then it's highly unlikely they would experience hair loss. Because it's NOT the medication itself that causes it.
