Just thoughts really. My best fruiend who has been on weight loss injections since January. Her BMI was high but she had very severe eating disorders when she was younger (10 years ago) and was hospitalised and everything. She has said she declared when ordering on medexpress that she had never had one. Her GP have been notified but have not objected to it. She’s never spoken to her GP. I’m worried about her as can see some unhealthy habits and just shocked she’s been allowed to have them in first place!

Presumably when she told you all this you had some kind of conversation about it? About the risk she’s taking with lying to the prescriber and the behaviours she is starting to show?

You could write to her GP practice and outline your concerns to them but I think that would probably be a difficult thing to get past in terms of your friendship. It would probably be better to tell her up front that’s what you feel you have to do, and go from there.

Yeh and I was quite honest to her my views! I’m just looking for an opinion as whether anyone agrees with me that her GP should be blocking it. Her response was well that was 10 years ago and I’ve been fine for that long.

The GP can’t “block” anything. They could contact the private prescriber to notify them about the eating disorder history. You could possibly contact the private prescriber and tell them about it, but I have no idea if they would take it seriously.

The simple fact is that if she had been truthful and declared the ED history, she would not have been prescribed. If MedExpress are told about the history they should refuse to continue to prescribe.

It’s nothing to do with the GP and they don’t have the authority to control private medicine.

Honestly, there is evidence that these drugs are amazing for people with eating disorders as they take away the good noise that drives people to binge eat and balance their blood sugar. So many past ED sufferers have reported that with WLI, for the first time in years, they feel normal.

She clearly meets the criteria on BMI, so is severely damaging her health. Why would you not want her to benefit from this?

Exactly - some people really need to mind their own business

I’m worried because she is my best friend who I watched nearly die from anorexia 10 years ago. Yes her bmi was higher so she qualified but I think it is reckless that she is allowed to be prescribed it given her history and without being kept a close eye on. The fact she lied about having a historical eating diroser is worrying in itself! She’s hardly eating and the way she is talking about her body is worrying me!

I've also been untruthful about the ED question with my WLI provider. I was anorexic in my early 20's, but it was a specific trauma response, rather than a body image trigger.

That was 30 years ago, and I've never had a wobble since. I slowly gained weight for 20 years - mainly through having kids and just bloody loving food - and here we are. I've been on MJ for a year and losing steadily and happily.

I've also heard that WLI can be a positive thing for ED, and I understand why in some cases.

However, you need to just be there if she needs you, OP. You shouldn't 'do' anything other than tell her your concerns - once, not repeatedly - and continue being a good friend to her. Hopefully, her WL journey will be a positive one and you can be happy for her.
