Gallstones and mounjaro

Hi everyone. Im severely obese, I'm considering getting some weight loss injections, as a last ditch attempt to finally lose weight. I've struggled all my life with my weight. I just want to be healthy and slim!

I hav diagnosed gallstones, no online pharmacy will touch me because of this.

Does anyone have gallstones and take them? Of course I know I could just "lie" but it does scare me the reasons of why they won't give it to me with gallstones. I also have anxiety around my ealth which is ironic really considering the state I've let myself get in. I'm very scared but I know I NEED something.

Any advice totally appreciated.

You could try a face to face appointment with a local pharmacy, lots are now offering weight loss injections. They can take a more customised approach compared to the more standardised approach of online pharmacies and might be able to prescribe it to you.

I have gallstones but very small and asymptomatic. They were found on a scan for something unrelated. I get my MJ from Superdrug, was totally honest with them and they were fine. My GP is happy with me being on it, I’ve been taking it for 16 months with no issues.

ihavetocookagain · 14/09/2025 21:31

Have you been given advise about changing your diet? A friend of mine ended up on a low sugar/fat free diet because of gall stones, she said it stopped a lot of her pain and she actually dropped a few stone in the process. Might be your first port of call so you can get rid of the gall stones first.

Thanks. I'm not experiencing symptoms currently from my gallbladder and attacks are few and far between. I've not had an attack for over 12 months but I do get "niggles and soreness now and now and again. I tried to make an app with my gp but they weren't really interested. I've also been considering orlistat as this is easier to get.

Yes I have multiple small ones. They haven’t been ‘set off’ and I think my obesity caused them. I will be cautious though, I stayed on a very small dose and now i’m normal BMI I’m going to wean off it.

I was actually booked for surgery last year, the first time I chickened out, the second time, the surgeon would not do it because he said I needed a bariatric surgeon. By the time the time came for the third surgery I was completely asymptomatic and I decided not to go ahead. My gp said the longer you go without symptoms the less likely the condition will worsen and I could continue to be symptom free for years to come. I was recommended a low fat diet and originally I lost a good amount of weight, then I guess I just got complacent because I was no longer in pain and piled the weight back on.

I had gallbladder issues and so decided to see a private gp for my first few prescriptions. It made me feel reassured that I was being monitored more closely. It did cost more but I'm happy I did it

Incidentally I'm now symptom free from any gallbladder issues and have been for ages

CharlotteCChapel · 14/09/2025 21:36

I lost 3 stone because of gallstones. I can't eat a meal that's too fatty. That includes things like cheese, meat I need to remove all fat. Roast potatoes ,chicken skin etc. I still getvpain even though I had them removed before covid

That's fantastic. Do you mind me asking how much weight you lost? I'm not sure whether me being so overweight caused them or the weight I gained and quickly lost during and after pregnancy, my gallstones only started 3 months after my son was born, he's 3 now. In that time I've had a handful of terrible attacks and one case of cholecystitis. But nothing now for well over a year.

That's great, do you mind me asking how much more expensive it was for the private gp? I'm on a limited budget and it is a stretch for me to even pay for the injections but I know I need to do something

The key thing is not to lose weight too quickly. That definitely exacerbates gallstones.

I'm desperate to lose 2/3 stone by January though indeed this might be unrealistic. My goal weight is a loss of 6 stones.

I keep losing and gaining the same 30lbs and I never seem to get any further. Each time I gain the weight back there is a little more and it's just a vicious circle

Yes of course. About 4 stone over 6 months. I think if you’ve had previous attacks you should be under GP care if you start.

So should I make an appointment with my gp and tell them I want to get weight loss injections?

@Sellingsunsets you should never lose more than 1.5 -2ln a week. The more you lose , the higher the risk.

butterfly0404 · 14/09/2025 22:31

I've lost 6st on MJ and have developed gallstones, small and mostly asymptomatic other than some slight discomfort. I had fatty liver when I started MJ 14 months ago, that's now reversed but the gallstones have taken it's place.

Just be very careful you dont exacerbate your problem but like me you will benefit from losing weight. Good luck x

Unless you meet the NHS prescribing criteria you'll need an appt with a private GP.

I'm not sure I do. But I do have high blood pressure and high cholesterol as well as a bmi of 43, not sure this would be enough

That's a fantastic weight loss. Congratulations. I don't want I make my gallstones worse however I'm aware it's going to come out eventually and I would like to be a smaller and healthier weight when that time comes to reduce the risks of surgery.

@Sellingsunsets for NHS criteria you'd need an additional 2 out of obstructive sleep apnea, Type 2 diabetes or heart disease to add to your high BP and high cholesterol.
