Any suggestions for what to do with clothes that no longer fit?

I'm at the end of my weight loss journey and I have lots of clothing I no longer need. I know the obvious thing is to take them to a charity shop, but as well as regular clothing, I have things like pyjamas, gym wear and even bras. I don't want to add to land fill, and there's far too much to even think about selling on Vinted etc, and of course a lot is not suitable for selling, although all clean and fit to reuse. Ideally I just want them to reach someone who might benefit, either because they are looking for 'tide me over' things during their own weight loss journey, or because they are in need. There is no women's refuge near me, that I know off, otherwise that would have been ideal.

Would welcome any suggestions, if any of you have found a good way to pass on the clothing you no longer need?

I would sell the best bits, well known brands in excellent condition, on Vinted or eBay. I would then offer the rest on a local freecycle/freebay type facebook group, and anything that doesn't go or isn't fit for reuse I would get your local council to collect for recycling which won't go into landfill.

Decent bras can be sent to https://www.againstbreastcancer.org.uk/recycling/bra-recycling or there might be a collection point near you.

Other than the above, I have a sewing machine and sew a lot of my clothes in and did a lot last 3 months but I've lost more now so need to do it again!

Jefferysundercrackets · 14/09/2025 15:20

Smalls for all, take bras, m and s used to have a basket in store for oxfam, not sure if they still do, and then it's charity I think, I'm in the same boat, I have brand new size 16 clothes, can't be arsed with vinted and the like it seems like they go for really cheap if not great brand names so they'll go to the charity shop. We have one nearby that I've bought some lovely clothes from as I've gone down the sizes, so I see it as giving back, it's also for a great local hospice, so I don't begrudge them having them. Hopefully I'll never need their services but at least I know I've done some good by donating stuff.
We also have one of those really old fashioned charity shops nearby that literally take anything, even bras and nightwear, might be worth googling to see if you have anything similar nearby.

Charity shop. 2 bags: one bag with stuff to sell, second bag with underwear and anything too ratty to sell labelled as “rag”.

FoxRedPuppy · 14/09/2025 16:51

Charity shops sell pyjamas and bras. And gym wear.

skyscrapersinging · 14/09/2025 19:15

I’ve been/am in same position, losing weight from size 16/18 to now 10/12, so have had an entire wardrobe of stuff to get rid of, plus some “interim” size 14s. Like someone above suggested, good brands I put on Vinted to get some cash back. Stuff in reasonable condition I took to charity shop, stuff in rubbish condition I gave to a local school, as it all goes to be shredded anyway, they get a few p per kilo.

Paaseitjes · 14/09/2025 20:06

If any are buttoned or wrap, especially in soft fabrics, you could sell them as a post natal bundle. I went in the opposite direction, going from a 12 to a 16 and don't really want to buy new or spend ages digging about on vinted. Work clothes to tide me over until I've lost weight would be great too!

Pipsballoon · 14/09/2025 20:53

Thank you everyone for your suggestions. I have put a small number of things on Vinted and I will bring the rest to a local charity shop, I have bagged the bras, pjs etc separately (thanks for the tip @THisbackwithavengeance ) and will let them decide what they can sell and what goes for rags.
Great suggestion @Paaseitjes about post natal use! And well done @skyscrapersinging what an impressive loss. I've gone from a 14-16 to a 12 and maintained now for long enough to be confident I'm never allowing myself to creep back up. Hence the very determined effort to clear out the things I don't plan to wear again!

Selling on vinted is a ball ache but at least you'll be paid rather than not when donating to a charity shop.

Use that money to treat yourself to new stuff.

It's a real ball ache! I have spent the afternoon sorting and uploading to the site. I've even washed a few things that were clean but hadn't been worn in ages to refresh them. So far I've sold 4 things, made potentially £10, for my afternoon's work and still have to parcel and drop off in two separate locations. I am happy they will bring someone else some pleasure, but I think it might have been easier to let it all go to the charity shop!

Vinted. It’s easy once you get started and worth it

MagnoliaTreePetals · 14/09/2025 21:28

I couldn't be bothered with Vinted and bagged up my clothes. DD asked if she could sell them on Vinted. She made £300 within 3 weeks.

GoingForAGallop · 14/09/2025 21:36

I’ve taken about 30 black sacks full of clothes to the charity shop and probably have another 10 sacks to still donate. All sizes from 28 to 12.

It gives me a lot of pleasure when the charity send me their annual statement telling me how much my donations have raised for them.

Fedupbeingfat · 15/09/2025 07:57

Charity shop for their rag bag

VelociraptorsVelociRapping · 15/09/2025 09:09

There probably is a women's refuge near you, but you wouldn't necessarily know about it. If you use Facebook it is worth asking on any local community pages - around here in addition to a women's refuge and a mother-and-baby home several of the churches run clothing banks. They are often glad of adult-sized clothing as they clothe whole families.

LurkThenPost · 15/09/2025 09:10

Sell it on Vinted, I sell everything I don't want anymore on there. No fees and buyer buys the label! So much easier.

Yup. My 16 yo whips through the sales!
Made 10 times what I did in 1/10 of the time.

Antimimisti · 15/09/2025 09:26

Look in the car parks of your local supermarket - there is often a clothing recycling bin for things which aren't suitable for charity or resale - they will take them for ragging. They also take shoes which is a bonus if you're like me and have strange feet so that when a pair fits you comfortably, you wear them until they fall apart 😄

Jefferysundercrackets · 15/09/2025 10:40

@limescale, what are they doing differently to me lol, tried on e Bay loads of looks but no sales, priced OK I think, 4 pairs of jeans for 15 for ex, one brand new.

LoserWinner · 15/09/2025 11:20

I put my stuff on Freecycle in batches. As a result, I met several hard-up young women who’d gained weight after childbirth, but who couldn’t afford to treat themselves to new clothes, so it was nice to be able to help them. A couple of car-booters asked, but I prioritised people who would wear and appreciate the clothes.

Pipsballoon · 15/09/2025 13:34

Thanks to your suggestions, I put a message on a local site and a lady who is on her own weight loss journey is collecting the clothes tomorrow evening. I am just mulling over whether I offer her the bag of bras, pjs etc, or just the two bags of actual clothes (jumpers, jeans, dresses, holiday wear). I'm worried about offending her, and some of the items look a little worn but nothing that was ready for the bin, only getting rid because they don't fit.

I'm up to a whopping £16 pounds profit on Vinted, that has at least paid for one of the two new bras I bought this week. Onwards and upwards 😁

One of my DDs is a Vinted seller so I give it all to her and she gets the money for her work. Anything like PJs or bras go to the charity shop along with any trousers I have had altered (I’m short) and things that might not/hasn’t sold on Vinted
