I have no hope of getting GP appointment let alone being prescribed WLI on the NHS.
I am seeking advice about which type I should buy.
61 years old, BM1 of 33. I had a TIA 18 months ago and stopped smoking. Exchanged it for vaping.i don't have any medical issues.
I do need guidance around which to look at please.
I think I need to lose around 5 stones

There is a book I would recommend. Food Noise by Jack Mosley. It's a good place to start as it has lots of info about Weight Loss Injections, which ones, what they are, how they work. Also tips about the best sort of diet to follow, how to lessen potential side effects, getting fit etc
It gets a bit preachy at the end about how much to eat/restricting calories, which I ignored as I choose not to count calories.

Personally I would recommend Mounjaro as it has proven benefits over Wegovy.
It works in 2 ways, as opposed to just the one, You can lose more weight on it and it carries less side effects. (although side effects are a bit of a lottery on either of them)
However it is more expensive.

I have lost over 5 stone and am now using it to maintain.
I am selling loads of old clothes on Vinted to help with the cost, I also drink far less wine, am eating less than I used to, and walk as much as I can rather than paying for petrol/transport. So although there is a huge financial commitment, it can be lessened overall.

Best decision I have ever made. I see it as an investment in me and my future.

See if your local Chemist/Pharmacy offer weight loss injections as many do.
Then it is easy to make an in person appointment and discuss the various options face to face.

This is how I get my weight loss injections prescribed. Obviously you pay for the pens.

Also, the advantage of using a local place is that you can collect it in person. The pharmacies that deliver are fairly reliable, but the delivery companies can have delays, it can arrive broken, or arrive in a heatwave when it is meant to have been kept cold. (All of which have happened to me over the past 9 months!)
A friend gets hers from Asda pharmacy so that she can collect it in person.

I am 59 and started with a BMI of 37. In 13 weeks I have lost 12% of my weight which is 24lbs. I am on Monjouro. It’s more expensive than Wegovy but it is better for weight loss and if you can keep on the lower doses you may find you don’t have to go up as much as some who have more to lose. I am on 5mg and don’t currently plan to go higher.

I have an issue that I can't find an answer to. I had pancreatitis 25 years ago, subsequently had my gall bladder removed. I see that people who have experienced pancreatitis should not use WLI.
I tried to make an appointment at the GP to discuss it.
The receptionist said immediately that it won't be prescribed. I tried to explain that I understand that and am prepared to pay. She told me that the practice has decided that it won't be involved in any discussions or medical tests.
I asked at 4 local pharmacies, including a huge Boots.
None of them deal with it.
The joy of living in a market town in norfolk!

I’m pretty sure that the Practice can’t unilaterally refuse to discuss WLI with you. That’s beyond outrageous.

I’d write a letter of complaint to your GP and the Practice Manager in the first instance saying that the receptionist is blocking you from seeking medical advice.

My GP was very supportive and helped me source them too.

Talk to a prescribing pharmacist, they can give advice. Oushk is one and Chequp

Mydogisagentleman · 11/09/2025 17:53

Thanks both. I don't actually have a GP. It's pot luck who you see. Time is around 4 weeks from asking to attending an appointment.
I'll have a look at those recommendations thank you 😊

@Mydogisagentleman the GP won't be able to discuss weight loss injections with you as they won't be able to prescribe them to you, they can't advise you on a private prescription. Many GP surgeries have notices asking people not to make appointments to ask for WLI as they cannot be prescribed.

If you want a private prescription for WLI then you just need to deal with the private providers online. They will take your medical history and then consider whether a prescription is suitable for you, and whether Wegovy or Mounjaro or both are appropriate. You should be able to ask them any questions that you have about which to choose. As your medical history is a little bit more complex than some people's, then you might be better off with one of the more responsive pharmacies like Oushk that have already been mentioned.
