GORD - anyone have experience of successful WLI?

Has anyone had any success using WLI with GORD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease)? I'm really worried about increasing reflux acid if I start taking them, but I would like something to help with willpower!

My Dd2 had to take Omeprazole daily for reflux .
She doesn't need it now . Whether that is because she has lost weight or because of something in the MJ l don't know but she was on MJ and the Omeprazole for a couple of months together and didn't have any side effects from it . We are all individuals l know but l think optimistically it's not going to cause problems . My Dd2 also asked the GP for the ok to start MJ and there were no contraindications that she could find with her meds at all .
Dd2 was on Doxycycline for HS, the mini pill , Omeprazole at the time . She has lost 7stone on it so far . Good luck 👍🤞🤗@YSianiFlewog

It will really depend on whether your GERD is weight/diet related or due to a other reasons, and you can take the WLI slowly, stick to the lower doses for longer and see what impact it is having on your GERD.

I was prescribed Omeprazole for 8 years before I started Mounjaro. I couldn't go a day without it without being very uncomfortable very quickly.

I stopped taking it last year after I'd lost around 3st, although I don't think it was only the weight loss, I think it was also the change in diet, coming completely off fizzy drinks, drinking more water and minimal sugar/UPF.

At that point the reflux became less regular and I started noticing more specific triggers - I now avoid tomato based foods, citrus, heavy meals, and also going too long without food. If I do that I am usually ok, otherwise if I am busy and perhaps skip breakfast a couple of rennies is usually enough to sort me out, or if I have a meal out an occasional dose of Gaviscon Advance helps.

So glad to be off the omeprazole as it was causing others issues for me.

I have been on omeprazole for severe reflux for the past 6 years. At least one a day, often 2.
My Weight loss Dr said that dues to MJ, to take up to 2 (ie one, twice a day), and be prepared to take up to 3!
I did get some indigestion when I started MJ and as I moved up the doses, but it was indigestion as opposed to reflux. So I increased the omeprazole to twice a day.
However I found I only needed to do that for the first few days after injecting.
Since losing weight I have gone back to 1 a day, even on the days after injecting.

Thanks all. I think I'll make an appointment to talk to my GP - it does sound like it's possible for my to start taking something.

I had quite bad reflux, have been on PPIs over the years but wasn’t on one when I started Mounjaro even though I really should have been anyway. it did make it worse but daily dose of Lansoprazole has sorted it as long as I am careful what I eat. Longer term I hope to come off the PPI as I hope weight loss will improve situation.

Have you checked so you know if you qualify for them under the NHS current rollout?

For example to be eligible for Mounjaro on NHS you must have a BMI > 40 and at least 4 of the following health conditions

  • type 2 diabetes
  • high blood pressure (hypertension)
  • heart disease (cardiovascular disease)
  • abnormal blood fats (dyslipidaemia)
  • obstructive sleep apnoea

Worth a read to understand what your GP is able to do.

No, I don't qualify for WLI on the NHS, my BMI is under 40.

I just want to discuss my health with my GP and get their opinion on me starting WLIs. I have a medication review coming up so will ask then.

Mines has gone with 18 months of MJ and I was taking lansoprazole 30mg for the previous 4 years

its been transformative. I have zero cravings for the things that made reflux worse, bread/pastry of any kind/alcohol
