On MJ, have you ever fallen off the wagon?

For the past two weeks I’ve had so much food noise and although it’s not as bad as it used to be, I’ve given in a few times and definitely fallen into bad habits - my weight loss has of course then slowed down. I’m going up to 7.5mg tomorrow (I did 3 months on 5mg) and I hope to tap this on the head and work hard on resetting my approach to food.

But just wondering about others on MJ. Have you found it easy to stick with it 100% or have you had times where you lost your way for a bit? How did you get back on track?

It’s too expensive now for me to waste this opportunity and I’m beating myself up for so easily falling back into ‘old me’ habits! It shows that I definitely need to do more work on my habits and reactions so that I’ll be stronger once I come off it.

Christmas, I was very surprised that after 6 months of the same dose a few treats led so easily to a few more and more until the unrelenting obsessiveness came back.

I never increased dose but it took at few weeks to get back into routine and everything calmed down again.

It was a valuable lesson for me, I know I can go out for and enjoy a meal, or have cake at a cafe, or even a weekly takeaway at home (smaller portion) but if I also know if I start mindlessly eating at home it will be an issue.

I compare it to smoking (if you can relate to that) one cigarette when out is very different to having a packet at home which will soon lead back to just one more and being a smoker again.

I think alcohol is still a trigger for me - I haven't really wanted to drink much but one day I did go out and had quite a bit and I definitely lost all my self-control around food. Luckily the MJ made it very easy to get back on the wagon the next day which wouldn't have been the case in the past

I think that’s where I went wrong yesterday. MJ was wearing off and I really fancied some wine. I had a fair bit of Prosecco last night and didn’t hydrate enough so today I’ve had the munchies. I’ve not been like this in 4 months and was really suprised at how easily I fell into it. I’m just trying to write the day off now and see it as proof that I need to go up a dose and do more work on my habits.

I agree had exactly the same pretty much at goal. Had big drinking night lots of junk food few days after and struggled all week to get back on track. Was trying to come off it but took injection today. I felt instant relief. I defo think alcohol trigger, need to learn to not binge eat after night out I seem to think MJ less effective after boozing.

I have used Mounjaro to move away from the "wagon". I try and eat like a slim person now. I don't view food as good or bad - it is simply a way of fueling my body. If I want chocolate I'll have it. If I want chips I'll have them. I just eat far less of them. I feel that I finally have a healthy relationship with food. You never hear a naturally slim person panicking because they over indulged on one evening. The more you view food or drink as forbidden the more you are drawn to them. I've lost 33% of my starting weight - original BMI was 38.

You’re right and it sounds like you’re in a very healthy place. I’m just a few months in and I still have a very faulty mindset with food.

I’d say in the first 3 months or so, I didn’t fall off the wagon as such, more I could definitely eat a lot more and drink a lot more, I had quite a few memorable and drunken social events, but the drug helped me get right back on the wagon the next day, I suspect part of your issue was you stayed in 5mg for 3 months, so were more and more simply using will power, you were not at your optimal dose.

the 2.5s are effectively half doses to help us move up, 5, 10, and 15 being the full doses. So you were on the lowest therapeutic dose for quite some time, which does work for many people if it’s their optimal dose, but not for others.

The manufacturers, who let’s face it, know this drug inside out and back to front, the testing alone takes 15 years, recommend moving up at a minimum monthly (could be longer) till you find your optimal dose, which is the one below the one you can’t tolerate.

but you know when you get there. For me it was 10mg, and I was lucky to do this before the price hikes came in, the effect of the drug was 24/7 and I stayed on that for many months, I’m over a year in, lost 6.5 stone, and in maintenance for the last 3 months. I’m now back down to 5mg, after titrating down to 7,5 and slowly increasing my cals my 100 odd a week, the increase in cals and the reduction in the meds, has seen the effect be identical to 10, I’m fully in control. And will now stay on 5mg for maintenance.

so I’d recommend listening to your body, don’t stay too long on a dose where deep down you know you’re now relying on will power mainly, as it is just a waste of money, and you will struggle, and then feel guilty, get to your goal in the way that works for your body, then titrate down, and undertake whatever maintenance plan works for you and your pocket. Good luck

I had this around 8 weeks in. Went away for a long weekend and ate one sweet treat… then another then another. Was shocked at how quickly those habits returned. But it was still a significantly smaller amount than I used to have; and I gave my head a wobble and got back on it when we came home.

mj makes it a lot easier to stop!

I had similar about 6 months in. On reflection I did wonder if the rubbish I was eating meant the MJ was fighting against my bad food choices so felt less effective. It lasted about 3 weeks but when I sorted my diet out it settled down and I had no trouble sticking to a good eating regime and the appetite and food noise suppression was higher again.

This is good advice - thanks! 5mg worked brilliantly for me for 2 months but then in the second week of week 3, I started thinking about food a lot again. I dismissed it as being hormonal but it’s continued and I then had the very silly ‘blowout’ of yesterday and the day before. I felt awful last night though - sick, shivery, toilet troubles and a side dish of being annoyed with myself.

I’ve taken my first dose of 7.5mg this morning so hopefully that will get me back on track. It’s been a wake-up call that those destructive habits are still there so I need to take some positive steps and deal with them.

I’d like to lose another 3 stone so I’m likely on this for another 6 months.
