Supporting a friend

A friend has been on MJ for nearly a month now. Though she has T2 diabetes and is very overweight was unable to get it from doctor so getting it privately. I'm happy for her and really hope it works but have sone concerns.
From reading here and various other sources I get that the general idea is to eat relatively normally, increase protein and water and Miunjaro takes away the food noise and feeling hungry. From what she's told.me, she's relying mainly on slimfast and Huel drinks with possibly 1 small meal a day,. She's probably on about 1200-1500 calories.
Secondly and maybe more worrying she's moving away from the pharmacies and going to get her jabs from a nutritionist who is a friend of a friend. These come in vials and not a pen which seems to be the norm.

Im not on mounjaro but will never say never and have been reading a fair bit which is why I think I have these concerns. Am I over thinking? Shoukd I just be supportive however she wishes to manage her weightloss?

The calorie intake sounds reasonable, but you are right, the idea is to eat a healthy balanced diet, and eat plenty of protein to avoid muscle loss. I guess each to their own, but I wouldn't want processed stuff like slimfast and huel drinks. I find it best to eat clean whole foods and cooks from scratch.

The biggest concern though is that it sounds like your friend isn't even on proper MJ. Goodness knows what it is if it's coming in a vial from an unofficial source. I fear many more will be doing this with the price increases.

Calorie intake sounds about right. If she wants to take slimfast etc then just let her - not your circus, not your monkeys - however doesnt sound like shes on proper MJ or though. This seems to be increasing thing as the prices hike up.

I think she's had her 1st 2.5 from a 'proper' pharmacy and possibly her next one but with the price increase decided to go for a cheaper option. Are nutritionists even licensed to sell what might or might not be Mounjaro?
I did wonder about the calories, Im about 30kg less than her and on about 1200-1400 so thought she would have been on around 1700.
I guess I'll just her to it and hope it all goes ok.

Early on when suppression was high, I had a lot of high protein drinks. It was the best way to get calories and nutrients in. As time went on and everything stabilised, I went back to eating normal food. 8st 7lbs down now and maintaining.

Re getting it from somewhere other than a registered pharmacy/doctor that’s just stupid.

When you say supporting a friend, what support has she asked for? What is she asking you to do?

katscamel · 02/09/2025 16:33

She's a very old friend and when I say support I just mean to be there if she needs it. We've both been through the whole failed weight loss things a million times before and I really hope this works for her. I guess im just worried that she hasn't really read up on things properly and might make daft mistakes

@katscamel i would strongly recommend you do everything you can to discourage your friend from buying vials from a “nutritionist”. In answer to your question, no, they are not licensed to sell Mounjaro, only registered pharmacies can do this - it is a prescription-only drug. In the UK it is only available in the KwikPens, not vials.
These vials are not from any traceable source and could contain anything. No way should she be considering injecting anything from this.
Has she considered shopping around? There are big differences in what pharmacies charge and she may be able to find one that is cheaper than her current pharmacy. Alternatively, if she really can’t afford it, then has she considered Wegovy?
