Can't afford the increase price of Mounjaro

ZoeSparkles · 01/09/2025 21:00

I've been on the Mounjaro pen since 12th of November 2024. I've lost almost 4st, its been a slower process for me as I'm physically disabled & can't exercise or walk much or far. I've been paying for my pen with my benefits. But there's no way I'm going to be able to afford these new price increases, my only option is to change to Wegovy but then if everyone changes to Wegovy it will only be a matter of time before they increase those prices as well, then what happens? I think its very unfair for people that really need & want to lose the weight especially for health reasons like myself & just won't be able to afford it anymore.

I've never found junk food cheaper, actual 'building blocks' for meals have always been cheaper, as long as you go for in season options and cheaper cuts of meat.

I mean I’m having salads for lunch instead of beans on toast (very cheap).

There also loads of research showing that junk food is cheaper. Go to Iceland and take a look at the cost of must frozen foods/meals.

And I have no idea what ‘building blocks’ meals are, off to google…

Salad can be cheap if you buy in season, however beans also aren't necessarily junk food.
No Iceland where I live, or Farmfoods, or Aldi etc etc

I'm on week 3 of my mounjaro journey and like everyone I am saddened by the price hike. It perhaps would have been a lot fairer to lower the prices for others. If I look around and switch to another provider (like someone has suggested is possible)can I go back to my present one. As I said I'm new to this so excuse my ignorance. Thanks for any help.

I was referred through my dietician to the weight management team back last year after what happened to me with my back injury etc I needed to shift the weight & fast. I've only just got my appointment with the weight management team, my bmi is still high enough even though I've lost nearly 4st but it still has to go through other specialist that can take another 6 months, but I am eligible for it & will eventually get it for 2yrs. Its just a waiting game.

Hi NMM ☺️
There's no problem with switching around and if you contact your current supplier with the another suppliers lower price, they may well match it! My very first supplier of MJ did exactly that. If you do want to return to them later, you'll just need to complete another application.

Top tip, save the prescription label from you pen as any new subscriber will want to see your journey to continue with the same dosage.... Essential when your BMI drops below 30 but you still want to continue...

Good luck 🤞🏼

I was really pointing out a stereotype that disabled people on benefits don’t work. We don’t know OPs financial situation.

I am going to have to cut back on stuff, but I feel guilty as it is extra stuff like holidays for my dc that will go. I think it is linked to this idea that somehow we are cheating and lazy for doing WLIs.

My food bill isn’t lower. I’m eating loads more protein, and fresh veg which is pricier. Junk food tends to be cheaper. I am saving on wine though. But I’d already factored that in to initial costs, before the price rises.

Would you actually sacrifice holidays and treats for the kids for the jabs ? God, I don’t envy wrestling with that bless you !

I guess it shows the hold that food has over us. I’m trying to think back 20/25 years to how my ( very slim and fit) husband would have squared that in his mind for me to access the medication over the extras from our joint pot .
In truth I don’t think we could have done it if it meant we as a unit had to make big sacrifices on extras , which would have been utter torture for me knowing the miracle escape from my awful prison of a body was so close but so far away.

The jabs have come for me at the right time and I feel lucky for that. Kids grown up and buggered off, 30 odd years of solid graft so high/ good salaries ; mortgage paid off etc
I have friends my age who can’t afford to bake into the budget and younger colleagues in the trenches who could probably stretch but can’t justify the cost/make the sacrifice with the family unit for the reasons you cited

it’s not often I’m glad I’m older bit in this sense hell yes !

A relative is literally making the generic versions and yes they are done and waiting but most of the patents have another ten years on them until they run out.

That’s not correct, the active ingredient for wegovy patent expires next year in the uk, not the delivery system so the delivery system will likely be different maybe vial, not sure, but the generics will be available from next year,

Edited

It wouldn’t mean no holidays. But some stuff. One of my dc doesn’t actually like holidays (autistic) so they won’t mind 😂.

Its also better for my kids if I’m healthy

Can I ask for your source for this information, I know the patent expires next year in a few areas, Canada for one, but I didn't think the UK was this soon.
