Which for new starter - wegovy or MJ?

Hi all, I'm looking to start WLIs, but not sure which to choose. Originally I was leaning towards MJ as people say it has fewer side effects, but with the new price increase would that be crazy?

Which would you choose if you were starting now, particularly if you've tried both?

Thanks!

Purely due to cost, if I was starting now, it would be wegovy for me.

Thebigonesgetaway · 24/08/2025 08:13

I think due to cost if it was me I’d start on wegovy and see how I do, as I could always switch .

SaltAirAndTheRust · 24/08/2025 08:15

Cost wise, most people will tell you wegovy.

but Mounjaro is the better drug. Scientifically it is more effective. The side effects are apparently fewer.

if it was me, I’d be going for the low doses of Mounjaro and see how I react, before deciding whether to stop and go for wegovy.

GoGoGovy · 24/08/2025 08:54

I’m the only wegovy user on the April thread. I’d say that all of the Mounjaro users have lost more weight than me and at a faster rate. A lot of them have also never gone above the 5mg pen. I have lost weight ( just under 2 stone in 4 months). The weight loss is slow and steady. They have, on average, lost over 3 stone.
The recent mounjaro price increases have really worried a few of my group, to the extent that some of them are talking about coming off the drug.

Can you afford mounjaro prices long term and into maintenance? Do you want an impressive, rapid weight loss or are you happy with slow and steady?

Side effects wise, I don’t think mine have been any worse than the mounjaro users. We have all, at some point, suffered with nausea and constipation.

edited to say 2st in 4 months

Argh, it has taken me so long to build up the courage to go for it and now I'm all confused again :(

It's not that I want an impressive weight loss to look better. I'm massively obese, but thankfully don't have the health conditions that mean it's covered on the NHS.

I can cover the lower doses, and we could manage the higher doses but it feels quite selfish to take so much from the family pot?

@SoUncertain don’t think of it as being selfish, everyone in your family will want you around for as long as possible so it is in their interest to get you to a healthy weight too. You may not have other conditions, but obesity will impact life expectancy and quality of life. Doesn’t really answer the MJ/Wegovy question but it is far from selfish trying to be healthier and if MJ is the way to go don’t feel bad about it. If I was starting now I think I would give Wegovy a try first.

Yellowsubmarine55 · 24/08/2025 22:03

You can stay on the lowest dose for your whole journey if it's working. There's no obligation to increase so that may make mj affordable for you.
Just a thought.

I'm not planning on going up and 22 weeks in I've lost 46lbs so I'm very happy.

Sofia25 · 25/08/2025 10:13

Mounjaro is more effectice, first 2 doses are still somewhat affordable even after the 1st sept price hikes so prbly go with Mounjaro. You can always switch to Wegovy after if needed.

Gettingbysomehow · 25/08/2025 10:19

Id have MJ every time as it works better but only if you can afford the price increases. Im 5 stone down now.
