Two probs: scales and docs

Hi.

I bought scales that go up to 400lb but when I stand on them (which I can hardly do as the plate isn't big enough to get my feet onto) I get an E error message, as I am over that weight.

I don't mind not knowing what I weigh, but how will I be able to track my weight loss on MJ if I can't weigh myself?

Secondly, I've been trying to get an appt with my GP for months and the receptionists just keep telling me they are short staffed, and that what few appt they had available are gone already and to phone back the next day but when I do they just say the same thing and they refuse to book me in on a later date. So the chances are, I am going to have to go through this MJ journey alone and without any GO checks, support, reassurance, or monitoring, and I shall have to pay for it although I am entitled to it on the NHS.

I've read about the various possible side effects and the advice is always, tell your GP this, or speak to or see your GP, but I can't. It's so frustrating.

regarding weighing - check your pharmacy can do it.

you might not get bad side effects, but not being able to see a dr when needed is a pretty bad show.

good luck!

can you not book a gp app and they’ll weigh you and assess? My DSIL did it this way. Best of luck @SecretNameforMN:) SIL is a new and much happier, healthier woman x

GiveMeWordGames · 22/08/2025 22:21

I get mine in person from a local independent pharmacy. I have monthly appointments, and they have scales there and a BP machine if needed as well. That might work for you in terms of medical support and being weighed etc but you'd still be paying as a private patient.

It's awful that you literally can't get to see your GP and I don't know what the answer is to that.

I would maybe track your weight loss by doing body measurements if you can, and by how your clothes are fitting. Also, you can get scales that go up to 550/600 pounds so may be worth trying those?

If you can’t get an appointment with your GP then I would write a complaint email to the practice manager and ask them how you can make an appointment given that you have followed their system for so many days and been unable to get an appointment.

Do you have 4 of the 5 health conditions needed to qualify for Mounjaro on the NHS? If you do then I would push hard to get an appointment and ask for it. It will be so much cheaper for you if you can.

There are scales on Amazon, not too expensive that weigh up to 600lbs.

Sorry to hear you can’t get a gp appointment, don’t give up.

They are permanently refusing to book any appointments in advance, telling me to phone in the morning but when I do, they tell me there are no appts and to phone again the next day. It's crazy, it's wrong and it may even be illegal but that is what they are doing and if I could change GPs I would, but there isn't another surgery available.

Thanks for that! I don't know why I didn't see these when I bought mine on Amazon. Mine look just like those but only go to 400lb.

Thanks for this. No, I don't have any of the other conditions on the list I just looked up owing to your question. I assumed that my horrendous BMI of 72 was enough.

Never mind, I can afford to pay myself.

I've applied for MJ online. But what you suggest sounds much better as I really do feel that, at my weight, someone ought to be monitoring me, advising me, and caring about my welfare. Clearly my GP does not. (I have not seen her for years.)

Could it be easier to book in with the nurse at the practice? For weight and blood pressure? Then they could get you a gp app if needed? I get my MJ from an independent pharmacist- who is wonderful and reassuring- he weighs me and does my bp and measurements monthly.

It may well be - I have never asked because I fear when I get there she would tell me that "only a doctor" can do or advise this or that and it would be a wasted journey for me and a waste of time. But I could ask next Tuesday. I think I would rather be under the pharmacist as there is one at the end of my road.

Surely having a BMI of 72 requires prompt medical attention.

Footle · 23/08/2025 07:11

It wouldn’t be a wasted journey. If ‘only a doctor’ can help, the nurse will have to make an appointment for you.

BerfyTigot · 23/08/2025 08:37

Good luck @SecretNameforMN hope you get a supportive pharmacist. And well done for persevering. 👏

Keep us updated!

Impossiblyme · 23/08/2025 09:07

I just wanted to say good luck. I really hope you get the support you need.

I ordered a scale last night, one with an extra wide plate as I have gigantic legs.
