Does food aversion go away if you stop mounjaro?

Not sure if this is the right place to post as folks who’ve stopped the jabs probably won’t be reading this section anymore.

But I was wondering if there’s anyone who’s reached their target weight and stopped mounjaro, who could share their experience?

Mounjaro has worked wonders for me and I’m nearly at target. I haven’t eaten healthily, as most food has just felt a bit gross to me and so I’ve ended up eating bland highly processed rubbish as that’s all I’ve been able to face.

Has anyone else had this? And did you regain your ability to eat healthy food ie fruit, veg etc after coming off the jabs? I’m at the stage where I’m needing to think about maintenance after stopping but at the moment I can’t imagine being able to eat a healthy diet.

@AngelicaDeverell is it possible that you’re on too high a dose for you, if you can’t face a healthy varied diet? Just eating highly processed “rubbish” food isn’t the intended effect of taking Mounjaro.

WeAllHaveWings · 21/08/2025 10:53

I haven't stopped yet so probably not who you are looking for.....

I don't see why you would not return to normal once the medication leaves your system (up to 30 days).

Why can you only eat bland food / feel food is a bit gross? Is it because the medication is making you feel nauseous? Would tapering down perhaps help with the food aversion while allowing you to eat more healthily but still have the support of Mounjaro for maintenance.

The oddity of Mounjaro is I am the opposite to you and while I no longer seek out or enjoy excessive sugar, carbs, fatty or UPF foods I am attracted to more veg and salad than I have ever eaten before, spicy foods such as chicken kebabs with lots of chilli, and fish, lots of fish - 2-3 times a week where before it would be once a month!

cross posted with @SilenceInside but see we have had similar thoughts!

If you can’t eat a balanced diet, you’re on too high a dose and will likely have lost a lot of muscle. This is really not what MJ is for. Chances are if you haven’t lost the weight in a healthy way, you will regain a lot of it. I would really try to taper down and try and count macros to make sure you’re getting the proper nutrients.

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 21/08/2025 11:38

I was on 2.5 mgs and lost about 8 kilos last year.

But in four months I put on 4 kilos being normal. That's not binging. That eating approx 2000cals a day

So I'm back on it now. It's frustrating. But unless I go hungry my body wants to pile it all on again.

That does sound like the polar opposite to the way my body’s reacted!

I’m not nauseous and have never had any real side effects, just this weird distaste for most food. It’s a bit like that fragile feeling when you’re getting over a tummy bug and you can’t face eating properly just yet.

Nope, I’ve been this way ever since starting on 2.5mg

I think it’s just the way my system’s reacted to it.

What dose are you on now? I would agree with @WeAllHaveWings that you could reduce your dose and spend some time trying to change your diet to include a healthier range of foods, before stopping altogether. My own personal experience has been the same as WeAllHaveWings, in that I am mostly the opposite to you too. I’d rather something fresh and salad-y, vegetable based with lean protein, and don’t each much in the way of processed carbs at all.

Willowy2 · 21/08/2025 13:01

I understand where you're coming from. MJ definitely changed my taste buds although I wouldn't say I've eaten highly processed rubbish but I've not certainly not been eating variety of foods or complicated dishes with lots going on in them. My favourite foods now are the most simple kind, no fuss, no faff. I'm sure I was making food way too complicated previously. I don't need recipes to follow, I'm happy with seasoned chicken breast, some crunchy just cooked enough green veg, some simple carbs like plain rice, potatoes, pasta etc. All these years of faffing with recipes and fancy foods, I just don't need or want that anymore. See if you can change up the bland highly processed stuff to some bland not so highly processed stuff perhaps?

Itscoldouthere · 21/08/2025 13:17

Is it that because you are a bit turned off food you aren’t bothering to cook and just grabbing pre made food?
Or has your actual in mouth taste changed?
I did have a period about 3 months in where I lost interest in food, didn’t want to go out to eat and didn’t enjoy my food as much as I got full so quickly, I think being in family that cooks every day helped get me through this phase, if it had been down to me I wouldn’t have bothered with proper meals.
However that phase didn’t last and we eat a very good varied diet, I also use Zoe to keep me on track and avoid UPF.
Long term eating UPF is not going to be good for your health regardless of what you weigh.
I’d probably try to make some changes.

It sometimes (not always) seems to me that the healthiest food does tend to be a bit more complex. Eg. I made home-made Hummus the other day. It was delicious, much nicer than shop bought hummus, more nutritious, and cheaper too. It really didn’t take long to make. But it’s still effort. And that’s not even including interesting salads or other healthy home-made things.

It’s nice on Mounjaro just to have a simple cheese and pickle roll some days and not worry about the calories too much. Another positive side, my sweet tooth, still there at times, has declined a bit, so I eat less in the way of biscuits, etc.

It’s nice for a while anyway, not to be always obsessed with calories and super-healthy eating, especially when one has stressful days when it’s very difficult to keep on top of this. Also, as a fairly sedentary 63-year-old woman with thyroid issues, I barely need 1000 cal a day.

I think it’s about achieving a balance between the two. And Mounjaro helps with this. I also use Noom for those days when I have the energy to calorie count (which is good for my education!).

HappyWineDay · 21/08/2025 13:58

Since starting on MJ I've found it relatively easy to stick to a healthy diet. If anything, it's the thought of processed food that turns my stomach. I haven't been able to get enough of fresh salads and simply cooked proteins. So I can't really offer the OP any advice, I'm afraid, just posting my personal experience as it seems to be the complete opposite.

Radiatorvalves · 21/08/2025 14:05

I eat pretty well generally. But biscuits, nibbles, crisps and wine were my problem. Didn’t fancy them at all while on MJ. Now at target weight and I’m beginning to fancy them again. But so far not too bad… but I think I’ll need to think about what I eat so as not to waste all the MJ loss.

ClawsandEffect · 21/08/2025 14:18

It's a recognised response to any bariatric changes.

It does mostly go away afterwards, although I still can't eat smoked fish now and I used to LOVE it. Not a huge chocolate fan still although liked it before.

piscofrisco · 21/08/2025 16:26

Mine did yes. It too about two weeks and the food noise was very much back on.

AngelicaDeverell · 21/08/2025 16:53

Thanks for the replies.

I wish I was like some of you and craving salads and protein!

Thinking about it, my healthy food aversion is probably akin to nausea even though I don’t feel sick. But I can’t handle the thought of anything with much flavour just now and have had to hide Facebook pages with recipes on, as I feel slightly queasy looking at photos of food.

Am anticipating coming off mounjaro in a couple of months time and then maintaining by eating mainly protein, fruit and veg. I miss being able to eat healthy food and am looking forward to having a more balanced diet again!

Yes, I think it is flavour extremes. The smoked fish I used to love tasted like old cigarettes when I tried to eat it while on MJ.

Orangesandlemons77 · 22/08/2025 10:57

I'm a bit like OP with the feeling, nausea mainly, it has improved a bit lowering my dose. Really struggle with anything like meat and fish, sometimes yoghurt is ok with a bit of fruit. Apples are ok.

Mainly living on stuff like protein shakes / huel, I am possibly changing to wegovy but will go very gently with the doses, in case it is better.

Interesting how we are all different isn't it.
