Golden dose query - Must it be the last one?

Hi all,

I took my golden dose today, fifth dose and as always the plunger pushed against the needle as it drew out the last of the medication. This got me to thinking, do you have to take the golden dose as the fifth dose in the pen?

The reason I ask this is because it would be much easier, and I'm sure friendlier to the needle to draw out the medication when the plunger is much further away from the needle. I also figured that it should not affect the other doses offered through the pen as they work on clicks. I wasn’t sure if penetrating the pen with the syringe needle rather than the screw on needle affected the pen in any way, not sure why if you use sterilised disposable syringes so thought I’d ask you knowledgeable lot as I’ve never seen it discussed before.

Interested to hear anyones thoughts.

Hey, so I considered this, but it does have to be the last one. The plunger stays in place and the liquid moves down. Therefore if you were to click again it would take more clicks for the plunger to reach the liquid for your next dose - defeating the purpose entirely. I had some liquid left after my last golden dose (as I had been taking smaller doses throughout) and had to use the insulin needle to get it out, as the pen had stopped at the usual number of clicks and didn't reach. Hope that makes sense, and helps.

Hi @Sam187 , thanks for your reply. So I think you're saying that if you draw down anything other than the last dose that the plunger won't move (like it does on the last dose) and therefore 'waste clicks' , is that right? I hadn't considered that one so thanks.

The rubber bung moves when you extract with a syringe, due to the suction. But there’s a rod gets left behind. Take a syringe dose early and you have to make false clicks to make the rod catch up with the bung. So however you draw out, the rod will still only get to the end after the set number of clicks, you can’t trick it to get to the end with some clicks spare, if that makes sense. That’s how my pens have worked, anyway.
