Maintenance after MJ

As many of us may now be thinking about tapering and coming off rather than staying on long term it’s got me thinking. I’ve also just watched the Netflix documentary on the biggest loser.

i am scared, I really am very concerned having seen that weight loss can cause metabolic adaptation and lower satiety hormones and higher hunger hormones. https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2017/11/03/health/biggest-loser-diet-exercise-study this article suggests that whilst losing weight is all about calories, maintaining is all about exercising. I can’t currently do any exercise really due to a hip condition. I don’t even get 1500 steps a day.

How are other people thinking about managing maintenance and coming off?

I’ve been on 12.5mg for a long while and I’m about 4 pounds off my goal. I had planned to just stay on 12.5 for another year and then taper. I’m now pushing out to 8 days between injections and will do that for four weeks and then drop to 10 and stay at that for a while. I’m hoping I can find an economical level I can stay on or to come off completely.

im also going to look into how I can do seated cardio and weight training to try and build up to 45 minutes of exercise a day, potentially 4 lots of 10 minutes?

thoughts?

Is the hip condition something that can be improved? I’ve only just started MJ so not there yet at all but it’s definitely on my mind!!

That’s a million dollar question! I’m very immobile at the moment as I’ve torn the labrum for the third time in 17 years. Every time I’m left in excruciating pain and there’s no real reason as to why it happens. I’m waiting to see a surgeon to see if they can do some magic with donor femoral heads and stem cells. Unfortunately due to the multiple complications of my right hip I now have osteoarthritis in my left hip. I’m seriously considering a home spin bike if I can get the hip fixed. And finding a physio that understands hyper mobility, chronic pain and knackered hips.

I started Mj a year ago and was doing Pilates most days at home until this stopped me doing anything.

I would say if I started over I’d be losing weight as slowly as possible and building in as much strength training and sustainable cardio as possible.

Can you work out a way to exercise? Even if not this second then building towards it - swimming or aqua aerobics? Can you do weights for your upper body seated? I wouldn’t do 4x 10 mins a day - I would try and start with 20/30 minutes gently and build up from there.

once you recover I would really try to build up strength in your hips as it really makes a huge difference.

FurForksSake · 17/08/2025 21:45

At the moment I’m not able to swim or do aqua as it’s all just too unstable.

I’ve got resistance bands and was using those, but I’ve had a set back with pain and so I’ve not done anything for the last two weeks.

I need to find something to do, I’ve used a hand bike at the gym years ago, but getting cardio in is really hard.

What does your doctor say about movement? At 1000 steps a day you must be finding it too painful to walk at all really? Can they help you with a plan for rehab? Or have they given you a time frame for healing?

FurForksSake · 17/08/2025 22:11

I need surgery, but it’s very complicated. I have a private referral but the specialise only works very limited in the private hospital. I have an nhs referral but not until October.

i rely on heavy painkillers basically. I asked about physio or rehab before I’m assessed for surgery but it’s too unstable and painful to be able to do anything.

so I rarely leave the house, I try and get up and hobble around the house every hour, but I’m pretty screwed.

I’ve had two previous repairs on the hip, so it’s already pretty damaged. Add in sciatica, degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis and hyper mobility, I’m basically a disaster.

@FurForksSake your situation sounds really difficult. However I think you should focus on the positives and try not to worry about the exercise. You have done an amazing job in nearly getting to goal. Focus your energy on cooking healthy meals that you enjoy and doing small jobs around the house, or spending the time to cover yourself in moisturiser and give yourself facials etc. Don’t worry about exercise and don’t focus on the negatives. Try to stay positive and give yourself a massive pat on the back!

Gosh that article spells it out doesn't it. I've just finished watching the series too.

After being morbidly obese for over 10years and suffering ME/cfs and being sedentary I suspect my metabolism is broken.

This really challenges the simple calories in/calories out formula based just on heigh and weight doesnt it.

My fear now is ill need mounjaro long term ( i still have 5.5 stone to go) and I'd initially hoped it would come down in price...

I'm scared my life is like that blsck mirror episode(I only made it half way through!) where this drug is my only option 😭😬

FurForksSake · 22/08/2025 17:32

That black mirror episode is so scary!

im hopeful that MJ prices will settle and then decrease when new drugs come to market. I’ll also be thinking about seeing if I can get down to say 5mg to maintain on as it will be so much cheaper.

I’ve been doing bursts of five minutes of boxing arm moves sat down. Five minutes is when the lactic acid build up gets to much. I managed to close my exercise ring yesterday and raise my heart rate enough to feel quite warm. I’m aiming to get up to 1500 total calories a day on my watch. That number is so low, but at least it’s something I can track and know that’s my maintenance maximum at the moment.

im sorry other people are struggling too :(
