Oviva - anyone using this?

It looks like they are using a Right to Choose loophole to prescribe Wegovy for NHS prescription prices.

Has anyone used this/thinking of it?

I did the form which said I was eligible apparently but then there's a form to give to your GP for a referal to them (I have already done right to choose for adhd I'm not sure I want to do this.). I'm actually not sure I want to come off mounjaro but I'm looking at the options...

I remember they used to run a weight loss programme with groups etc but it's the wli I'm interested in knowing about!

It looks like my area have a statement on this.. If you meet tier 3 criteria ( I did as was trying to get on it in order to move onto bariatric surgery) then they will do the referal.

I don't know if the fact I've lost a lot already would go against me. But I'm still over bmi 35 with a condition.

You can only use right to choose if you haven't already been referred for that condition within the NHS and only if you met the NHS criteria for weight management services in your area.

It might help some people but a large number of those using Mounjaro privately wouldn't be able to get it via the NHS/ Oviva as they won't meet the criteria. If you go on the GP part of the website and select the ICB you are under you can check the criteria for referral.

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 16/08/2025 16:52

No I've not yet been referred for tier 3 locally aswhen the GP tried in Jan they'd closed their lists. Then I did private mounjaro.

Tier 3 referals are a lot less strict than the current mounjaro rules.

Mounjaro - 40bmi plus 4 conditions like diabetes/heart problems.

Tier 3 which is what gives you access to wegovy this way varies by area. In my area it's

*Bmi 35 plus comorbidity such as asthma
*Bmi 40

So I'd be eligible (as would a lot of people I imagine...) which is why I was wondering.

They can prescribe for 2 years as part of a tier 3 programme (my area tier 3 doesn't prescribe but tier 3 can. So referal to oviva is done through Right To Choose and they prescribe)

Reddit has some threads of people on it. It's the cost of NHS prescription so would be very worth it.

I also am doing really well on Mounjaro but I'm paying for it and really struggling to do so.

So this would be a risk to move to wegovy BUT it would be on the NHS so cost of prescription and it looks like dietician support too.

And yes just checked via the websites referal form. It simply wants confirmation of weight, recent blood test and that you are bmi 40+ or 35+ with a condition (including nafld which I have as well as asthma)

Is it that simple??

I tried this about 10 months ago, I had started on MJ but was over BMI 35, now too low at BMI 28, anyway the GPs were a bit funny about it and told me they had many patents waiting for a long time for tier 3.

I think I just got fed up and ended up staying on MJ. Anyway I saw something since this new price change news has come out about how the next stage of the MJ 'rollout' might open that up to BMI 35 plus in the Spring...I will try and see if I can find that for not sure, it was made in the Telegraph?

It's here but sorry I am not a subscriber so can't access the full thing..

MrsMiagi · 16/08/2025 21:25

everyone I know was refused but I think it depends on your area. Good luck

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 16/08/2025 23:52

You know people who have applied to oviva through Tier 3??

Googling I found people on reddit using it but haven't really come across it as an option before.

Its not the restrictive mounjaro option that came out recently just for those with 4 conditions and high bmi.

Tier 3 in my area is usually pre-bariatric prep but in some areas it can include wegovy which is why it can be accessed through Right to Choose.

I'm genuinely surprised there aren't tons of us morbidly obese people doing it.

A family member had been accepted through this, will she likely be prescribed Wegovy?

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 17/08/2025 04:32

From the short amount of googling I've done it looks like there's a few stages to go through and then they have an appointment to discuss options with you - and wegovy is the weight loss injection option.

It does seem hey have an app and a dietician and things as wrap around care which also looks good.

Yes I was referred via my GP as were 6 other people I know. All in my local area were refused. Despite meeting the criteria with Oviva, the NHS wouldn't fund it in our area for 5 of us. My cousin lives further away and has been approved, she is waiting to be contacted to see what they will offer. I since paid privately for MJ and have lost 50 pounds

FatsiaJaponicaInTheGarden · 17/08/2025 12:04

Oh sorry to hear that. In theory they shouldnt refuse right to choose if it complies. (At least I went RtC for adhd and it was similar)

Ive googled and found a statement from my NHS area saying they will refer you to Ovicia if you meet their (my area) tier 3 criteria - which is simply the 35+ or 40+. But I don't know what they do in practice.

I ideally really want to stick with mounjaro as it's known to me - I've done 7months on it and it's working - and not have to titrate up from scratch with wegovy.... But we are quite low income so it's a huge thing to pass up.

But we'll done on the 50pounds 🥳🥳.
