I’m 54, and have piled on the weight since menopause and Covid.

Currently weigh 12 stone and at only 5’ tall I’m feeling absolutely enormous. It’s all around my belly and so uncomfortable!

Thinking of trying injections but unsure of which ones to go for. Hoping I would qualify as I have high blood pressure and Cholesterol.

Would appreciate any advice on where to begin and benefits of wegovy vs mounjaro.

Thanks

Wegovy. think you’d be mad to start mounjaro now.

SchoolDilemma17 · 15/08/2025 19:09

As pp said, don’t start any US company ones now

Mysticmaiden · 15/08/2025 19:12

OP have you heard of the mounjaro price rises coming in on 1st September? Wegovy is best for now. I think a tablet version is coming out next year.

chowmeinz · 15/08/2025 19:13

I wouldn’t start MJ until we know how much it’s going to cost after the price increases. This information is likely to be confirmed soon as it takes place from September 1st. I also wouldn’t start W if MJ might be an option, hold off for a week or so before deciding and read as much as you can about the 2

I think this is really sensible advice. The list price has changed, but that's basically the recommended retail price. It's not the wholesale price (not sure what that even is), and providers will still be able to negotiate prices with the manufacturer and give customers discounts.

I think it's inevitably going to go up, but who knows by how much, and I imagine there will be quite a difference between the small and the larger providers. I'd wait and see. If it becomes too high then try Wegovy I guess, but in general Mounjaro is considered to be more effective so if it turns out to be affordable, that's probably a better bet.

Thanks everyone, I’ve only just heard about the mj price increase so will keep an eye on that and look at wegovy too

Why mad? OP will probably struggle to get hold of it at the moment, but once prices have settled down she can make the choice of paying more if she wants.

I was planning on starting MJ in September 🤦 and am probably going to just pay more as it seems more effective and less likely to cause side effects than Wegovy.

because in the long term it’s likely to cost 250+ at the higher doses. If you CAN stay on the lower doses then great but there’s every chance as your body gets used to it, the lower doses will have diminishing returns. This means you might have to go up to the higher doses just to see any results. If that sort of price range is feasible for you then by all means, if you go up a dose every month (which is what a lot of providers suggest, though this is by no means necessary if lower doses are still working), you could potentially be paying that higher price point by February.

Mounjaro is more effective if you read the testing, but wegovy is only slightly behind it. When Mounjaro was only slightly higher in price a lot of people opted for that but with a steep difference in price now coming, I think a lot of people will go for the most cost effective one.
in terms of side effects, it’s all subjective. Plenty of people have had no side effects on either. You’ll get people saying they had no results on mounjaro but did on wegovy and vice versa.

ultimately it’s personal preference, if the cost isn’t a concern then great - but I still think it’s mad to start Mounjaro at this current moment in time. A lot of providers are out of stock of 5 mg+ at the moment due to this news (and some aren’t accepting new customers), so it would be pretty rubbish for someone to start on 2.5mg and then potentially need 5mg for the following month and not be able to get it.

@dizzyupthegirl86 Ah I see - I wasn't thinking about the higher doses. Fair enough!

I've done a ton of research as I've been considering starting for months, and Mounjaro seems to get significantly better reviews overall. But I do know someone who lost five stone on Wegovy with very few side effects once he'd figured out what foods to avoid, so it certainly worked for him. He switched a few months ago and prefers Mounjaro for maintenance, though.

jan2310 · 16/08/2025 09:57

I’ve just started on Mounjaro, about to start my 4th week. I can already say that it feels like one of the best things I’ve done for myself in a long time. If you can afford it I would recommend it. It’s worth the investment In your health.

I did loads as well, been on it for three months now. Like I say, when Mounjaro was only a little higher, it made sense coz the results from testing were better but now it’s not such an easy call!

I think the difficulty in deciding is, a lot of people can stay on the lower doses (where the price increase doesn’t look quite so bad). I’ve been lucky that 2.5 mg is working for me still, but a lot of people don’t seem to realise that that’s only the loading dose to get you used to the medication, and was never intended to make you lose weight. Even if you do, it would be gutting to be doing well on it for a couple of months but when you need to go up to the higher doses, you have to stop as you can’t afford it. Genuinely think that would be worse than not starting at all!

ive got a friend just about to start and she’s like ‘oh it’s fine coz I only want to stay on the lower dose anyway’ and in her mind she’s going to take 2.5mg for two months and lose 25lbs and then she’ll come off it. But it doesn’t work like that for a lot of people!

LavenderBlue19 · 16/08/2025 11:49

@dizzyupthegirl86 Haha, yes I must admit I'm hoping the same! Or at least 5mg. We'll see! I'm just going to wait until things have settled, maybe Trump will forget about it in time.

ScarlettMcCain · 16/08/2025 14:55

Ah that's interesting @dizzyupthegirl86, I didn't realise 2.5mg is only the loading dose!

I'm in the same position as @spidermum18 , was hoping to start WLI shortly for weight loss, as well as treating my high blood pressure and high cholesterol... I was approved by Oushk about a month ago but we were about to go on holiday so I thought I'd start when we return. Of course, whilst we were away the news about the price increases hit Confused so now I'm not sure whether to start with Mounjaro as planned, or just try Wegovy - the MJ cost they quoted me hasn't increased yet on the website, but I imagine it will at some point soon, and possibly past the point where I can afford/ justify it...

chowmeinz · 16/08/2025 17:54

2.5mg is a starting dose, not a loading dose.
